Real gift at Christmas
IT was Christmas Eve, 1881. I was 15 years old and feeling like the world was over for me. I didn’t have enough money to buy myself the gift that I had wanted that year.
Dad came back in and there was ice in his beard. “You’ve been by widow (寡妇) Smith’s house recently?” he asked. Widow Smith lived two miles down the road. Her husband died a year ago and left her with three children.
“I rode by just today,” Dad continued. “Little Jack was out looking for wood (木头). They must be out of wood, Tom.”
We filled our sled (雪橇) high with wood. Then we went to the store and Dad bought some food, and a smaller pair of shoes. I tried to think through what Dad was doing. I knew we didn’t have much money, so why was Dad buying them so many things?
We got to the Smith’s house and went in. “We brought you a few things, madam,” Dad said, and put down the bag of food on the table. Then Dad handed widow Smith the pair of shoes. She bit her lower lip (下唇) to keep it from trembling (发抖), and then tears filled her eyes and started running down her cheeks.
My throat seemed to be filled with something, and there were tears in my eyes, too. Just then my dream gift seemed very unimportant. Dad had given me the look on widow Smith’s face and the smiles of her three children. He had given me the best Christmas of my life.

Bikes are popular in the Dutch. In fact, nearly half of all travel in the Dutch is by bike. Now, one Dutch bike designer (设计师), Thomas, has taken the country’s interest in bikes by making a school bus bike.

So far, Thomas tells Fast Company, he’s sold 25 school-bikes, at a price of $ 25,000 each—less than it would cost to buy a traditional school bus with the same number of seats. Along with the traditional color, the bikes are colored yellow so that they can be seen easily.
Thomas says he’s sold school bus bikes to neighboring countries such as Belgium. England and Germany, but so far, the school bus bike hasn't been sold in the United States. If you’re ready to add more physical activity(体育运动) to your life, here are some tips(建议).
Make physical activity part of your routine, like brushing your teeth or going to work. Try biking to work at least once a week, using the stairs more often, or walking to some places near home. But talk to your doctor before you start an exercise routine, especially if you haven’t been very active or have health problems.
Walking is one of the best fitness(健康) activities. To keep up a routine, you can walk with family members, friends or pets. Count your steps with a step counter(计数器). You can buy one at a sporting goods store. If you don’t have time for one 30-minute walk, break it into three 10-minute walks.
Find an activity that you enjoy, and stay with it. Change it with other activities so you don’t get bored. For example, walk three days a week, and swim or bike on the other days.
