Have you ever been sad because you failed in something? If so, please remember, for often, achieving what you expect is not the most important thing. Here is a story to tell you why.
One day a little boy decided to dig a hole behind his house after watching a science program. As he was working, a couple of boys stopped by to watch. “What are you doing?” asked one of the visitors. “I want to dig a deep hole all the way through the earth!” the boy answered excitedly. The older boys began to laugh, telling him that it was impossible to do it. Then they left.
The little boy kept on digging and digging. Suddenly, a few small colorful stones caught his eyes. He collected them and put them into a glass jar (罐) patiently. Humming (哼唱) a song, he went on digging. The jar was full soon. Then he talked to himself calmly and proudly, “Maybe I can’t finish digging all the way through the earth, but look at what I have found in the process (过程) of digging!”
The boy’s goal (目标) was too difficult, but it did cause him to go on, in other words, to cause us to keep working!
Not every goal will be achieved. Not every job will end up with a success. Not every dream will come true. But when you can’t achieve your goal, maybe you can say, “Yes, but look what I’ve found along the way! There are so many wonderful things that have come into my life because I tried to do something!” It is in the digging that life is lived. It is the unexpected joy on the journey that really has a meaning.

Almost every day, we discuss the topic of health, especially for kids. But what is health? “Health” means eating well, getting enough exercise, and having a healthy weight. Let’s read the following rules. They can help you stay healthy.
Eat a variety of food, especially fruit and vegetables. We all know that eating fruit and vegetables can help us stay healthy, but many of us only eat our favorite food. Remember that we can only get the nutrition (营养) we need by eating different kinds of food, especially fruit and vegetables.
Drink water and milk most often. Everyone knows that water is important. Besides that, kids need plenty of calcium (钙) to grow strong bones, and milk is rich in it. Every day, you should drink at least three cups of milk, when you are 9 years old or older. You should also try to have less sugary drinks, like soda and coca. They include a lot of sugar. Sugar only includes calories (热量), not important nutrition.
Listen to your body. When you are eating, notice how your body feels. When your stomach feels comfortably full, stop eating. Eating too much makes you feel uncomfortable. If you do it too often, it can make you unhealthy and fat.
Limit screen time. What’s screen time? It’s the amount of time you spend watching TV, movies and playing computer games. The more time you spend on the sitting, the less time you spend playing sports, like basketball, and doing other activities like riding and swimming. Try to spend no more than 2 hours a day on screen time.

A.plenty of B.all kinds of
C.the rest of D.a lot of

For Chinese, it's a time for dragon boat racing and Zongzi (粽子). But across the Yellow Sea, South Korea, wrestling (摔跤) and swing play are the highlights. However, both events go by the same name-the Dragon Boat Festival-which falls on May 5 of the lunar calendar.
One festival, two cultures: does one nation have the right to call its own? It has been reported that South Korea will apply to the UNESCO (联合国教科文组织) to make the celebration its cultural heritage (文化遗产). If successful, people from other countries may see the Dragon Festival as a Korean creation.
As the birthplace of the yearly event more than 2,000 years ago, China is not happy with the situation. "It would be a shame if another country successfully made a traditional Chinese festival part of its own cultural heritage ahead of China," said Zhou Heping, deputy culture minister. The Ministry of Culture is even thinking of making its own application to UNESCO, covering all traditional Chinese festivals, including the Dragon Boat event. Over the years, the Dragon Boat Festival has spread throughout the world. In Japan and Viet Nam, as well as South Korea, the festival has mixed with and become part of local culture.
With this in mind, some experts say that it is meaningless to argue about which country the festival belongs to. "No one can deny that it came from China," said Long Haiqing, an expert from Hunan Province. "But if all the countries involved can protect culture heritage together, they will all benefit."
The underlined word "highlights" can be probably replaced by "____".

A.most exciting events
B.highest lights on the building
C.brightest lights at night
D.most famous festivals

It can be inferred that South Korea ____.

A.has proclaimed (宣布) the Dragon Boat Festival as a part of its cultural heritage
B.has the exactly same Dragon Boat Festival as China
C.has no idea that China has such a festival
D.is paying more attention to its cultural heritage than China

China is not happy with the situation because ____.

A.it created the festival
B.it is also making an application
C.South Korea has no right to call the festival its own
D.UNESCO may approve (批准) South Korea's application

If South Korea's application to UNESCO is successful, ____.

A.China will also make its own application to UNESCO
B.it will be meaningless to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival
C.people from other parts of the world will think South Korea created the festival
D.the Dragon Boat Festival will become part of local culture

The author would probably support(支持) ____.

A.a move by South Korea to cancel its application
B.China getting UNESCO's approval of the festival first
C.the opinion of Zhou Heping
D.China paying more attention to its cultural heritage

Once upon a time, all the feelings(感受) such as Happiness, Sadness and Love lived together on an island. One day the feelings heard that the island would sink(下沉). They all repaired their boats and left except Love. Love wanted to stay until the last possible moment. Just as the island began to sink, Love decided to ask for help.
Miserliness(吝啬) was passing by Love in a big boat. Love said, “Miserliness, can you take me with you?” Miserliness answered, “I can’t. There are a lot of silver(银子) in my boat. There is no place for you here.”
Love decided to ask Vanity(虚荣) who was also passing by in a beautiful boat. “Vanity, please help me!” “I can’t help you, Love. You are all wet. You’ll make my boat dirty.” Vanity said.
Sadness was close by, so Love asked for help, “Sadness, let me go with you.” “Oh…Love. I am very sad and I need to stay in my boat by myself!”
Happiness passed by Love too, but she was so happy that she did not even hear Love call her.
Suddenly, there was a voice, “Love, I will take you.” It was an old woman. Love felt so lucky that he even forgot to ask for her name. When they got to dry land, the old woman went away. Love asked Knowledge, another old woman, “Who helped me?”
“It was Time,” Knowledge answered.
“Time?” asked Love. “But why did Time help me?”
Knowledge smiled with deep wisdom(智慧) and answered, “Because only Time can understand how great Love is.”

July 16th was a bad day for Arthur Johnson. In the morning, he set off from his home in Santa Barbara, California. It was the start of his summer holidays, and he decided to visit his friends at Las Vegas. Then he hoped to go fishing at Lake Mead.
Johnson’s troubles started while he was driving happily across the Mojave Desert. His car was broken and he tried to repair it, but he failed. He telephoned a workshop to ask it to send a tow truck (拖车) to pull the car away and repair it.
When waiting for the tow truck, he fell asleep. While he was sleeping, a tow truck arrived from San Pedro and pulled his car away. Later on, Johnson woke up and thought that somebody stole(偷,盗) his car. Unwillingly, he started to walk back towards San Pedro, but a police car stopped him to find out why he was walking in the desert. Johnson looked like a man wanted in California for robbery(抢劫), so the police kept him at San Pedro for the night.
At last, Johnson’s friends came from California the next day. They proved(证明) that Johnson was not a harmful salesman(销售员), so they let him go.

Linda Evans was my best friend—like the sister I never had. We did everything together: piano lessons, movies, swimming.
When I was 13, my family moved away. Linda and I kept in touch through letters, and we saw each other on special time—like my wedding and Linda’s. Soon we were busy with children and moving to new homes, and we wrote less often. One day a card that I sent came back, stamped “Address Unknown.” I had no idea how to find Linda. Over the years, I missed Linda very much. I would like to share happiness of my children and then grandchildren. And I needed to share my sadness when my brother and then mother died. There was an empty place in my heart that only a friend like Linda could fill.
One day I was reading a newspaper when I noticed a photo of a young woman who looked very much like Linda and whose last name was Wagman—Linda’s married name. “There must be thousands of Wagmans,” I thought, but I still wrote to her.
She called as soon as she got my letter. “Mrs. Tobin!” she said excitedly, “Linda Evans Wagman is my mother.” Minutes later I heard a voice that I knew very much, even after 40 years, laughed and cried and caught up on each other’s lives. Now the empty place in my heart is filled. And there’s one thing that Linda and I know for sure: We won’t lose each other again!
