We were standing at the top of a church tower. My father had brought me to this high tower in a small town not far from our home in Rome.I wondered why.
“Look down, Elsa," Father said.I gathered all my courage and looked down.I saw the square in the center of the village. And I saw several streets leading to the square.“See, my dear,”Father said gently.“There is more than one way to the square.Life is like that.If you can't get to the place where you want to go by one road, try another."
Now I understood why I was there.Earlier that day I had begged my mother to do something about the bad lunches that were served at school. But she refused because she could not believe the lunches were as bad as I said.
When I turned to Father for help, he would not help.Instead, he brought me to this high tower to give me a lesson.By the time we reached home, I had a plan.
At school the next day, I poured my lunch soup into a bottle and brought it home. Then I asked our cook to serve it to Mother at dinner. The plan worked perfectly. She tried one spoonful and sputtered.“The cook must have gone mad!” Quickly I told what I had done, and Mother promised that she would take up the matter of lunches at school the next day!
In the years that followed I often remembered the lesson Father taught me.I began to work as a fashion designer two years ago.I wouldn’t stop working until I tried every possible way.Father’s wise words always remind me that there is more than one way to the square.

Are you afraid of tests? What will you do to prepare for a test? The following suggestions will be helpful.
Pay attention to what your teacher gives about a coming test. Write down exactly what you will be tested on. Knowing what the test will cover is half done.
Make a review list that includes important points from class and reading material. Then your studying notes will be in one place. What’s more, rewriting the material will help you to remember it.
Don’t cram (突击式学习)!Test preparation begins the first day of class, so keep on doing your reading and homework. Then you just need to review for the test—not learn all the materials. If you wait until the night before to try to learn everything, you will only put more stress (压力) on yourself.
Get a good night’s sleep before the test, but if you can’t, don’t be awake the whole night. Research shows that getting at least four hours of sleep produces the better test results.

In modern society(社会) there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, for they believe that it is helpful for social progress and richness. Others say that competition is bad, and that it sets one person against another and leads to unfriendliness between people. I have trained many children who held the belief(看法) that their self worth came from how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life and death matters. Sadly, they forget to develop many other human qualities. However, while some seem to be lost in the strong wish to succeed, others think quite the opposite. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary(普通) players, they strongly blame competition, especially youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures(压力) from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often find that they even choose to fail. They seem to choose failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse, “I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.” In fact, they are worried that if they had really tried and failed, the failure would mean that they were worth nothing. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one’s self worth comes from how well one performs in comparison(比较) with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. We can only discover a new meaning in competition as such worries and fear begin to disappear.
