Singapore worries a lot about the fitness of its people. One third of the people in the country of four million are overweight, and about 6% of them are obese (过度肥胖). Every year, September is fitness month and one year recently the for the month was “Fighting Obesity”.
This fight unhealthy lifestyles starts in the schools. Everyone is educated about eating well and taking exercise. Students whose weight is more than it should be are asked to join the school health club and take part in special activities to help them a couple of kilograms. During breaks they do not go to the canteen (餐厅) to eat snacks, to the school hall for some exercise. The school also talks to their parents to see if they can plan a healthier diet for the children.
