While popular in the US,the April Fool’s Day tradition is even more popular in European countries, such as France and Great Britain.Although the roots of the traditional tricking are unclear, the French and the British both have their own stories about the origin of the celebration.
One story holds that the first April Fool’s Day was on April 1 of the year when the king of France introduced the new calendar. This new system placed the day that had formerly been the first day of a new year on April l.Many people were not used to the new calendar and continued(继续)to celebrate New Year’s Day on what had become the first day of April. Thus, they became the first April Fools.Others began to give funny gifts on the day to laugh at the fools who continued to celebrate the New Year on April 1.
An English story about the day, however, says that it began sometime during the 1200s.At the time,King John was in the habit of making roads out of the paths he most often walked along. The people of one particular farm village were aware of this.To avoid having their green grasslands and pastures(牧场)disturbed by one of the king’s roads, they built a fence that prevented the king from walking through their countryside.
The king sent a group of messengers(使者)to inform the villagers that they must remove the fence.Upon hearing that the king was planning to do this, however, the villagers developed a plan of their own. When the king’s messengers arrived, they were met by the villagers pretending to be mad.The people just throw things and ran around wildly. The messengers were surprised by this and reported to King John that these people were so mad that there was no necessity of punishing them. So,the villagers saved their farmland by tricking the king.In Great Britain, tradition only allows April Fool’s tricks from midnight to noon on April l.Those who try to play tricks in the afternoon become the fools themselves.Which country has the origin of the celebration of April Fool’s Day?

When we talk about intelligence(智力),we do not mean the ability to get good scores on certain kinds of tests or even the ability to do well in school.By intelligence we mean a way of living and behaving(表现),especially in a new situation. If we want to test intelligence,we need to find out how a person acts instead of how much he knows what to do.
For example, when in a new situation,an intelligent person thinks about the situation, not about himself or what might happen to him.He tries to find out all can be,and then he acts immediately and tries to do something about it.Probably he isn’t sure how it will all work out,but at least he tries. And if he cannot make things work out right,he doesn’t feel ashamed(羞愧)that he failed,he just tries to learn from his mistakes. An intelligent person, even if he is very young, has a special outlook(看法)on life,a special feeling about life, and how he fits into it.
If you look at children, you’ll see the great differences between what we call “bright” children and “non-bright” children. They are actually two different kinds of people, not just the same kind with different amount of intelligence. For example, the bright child really wants to find out about life, and he tries to get in touch with everything around him; while the unintelligent(不聪明的) child keeps more to himself and his own dream-world:he seems to have a wall between him and life in general.According to this passage, intelligence is the ability to_________.

A.try not to feel ashamed |
B.learn from his mistakes |
C.try to find all he could |
D.make sure what result he would get |
Bright children and non-bright children________.

B.are different mainly in their degree of cleverness |
C.have differences only in their way of thinking |
D.have different knowledge about the world |
Farmer John and Farmer Bob were neighbors. For more than 30 years, they had been getting along very well.
Then their good relationship broke. It began with a small thing, then bitter words, and then weeks of silence. One morning Farmer John woke up to find a stream between the two farms. “It must be Bob,” John thought.
Then one day there was a knock on John’s door. He opened it to find a carpenter(木匠) standing at the doorway. “I’m looking for a few days’ work,” the carpenter said.
“I do have a job for you,” John said. “Look across the stream at that farm. That’s my neighbor Bob. He dug a stream between the two farms. I want you to build a fence—an 8-foot fence. I don’t want to see his place or his face any more. I don’t have such a neighbor!”
The carpenter said, “I think I know what to do, sir, and I’ll be able to do a job that pleases you.”
Farmer John helped the carpenter get the materials(材料) ready and then he was off for the day.

Then they met in the middle, taking each other’s hands. “I’m terribly sorry for what I have said and done. We should be good to each other.” said Farmer Bob.
Then they turned to see the carpenter, who was ready to go. “No, wait! Stay a few days. I have a lot of other jobs for you,” said Farmer John. “I’d love to stay,” the carpenter said, “but I have more bridges to build.”Just before the carpenter came, John and Bob each other.

What are you going to do if you are in a burning house? How will you escape? Do you know how to save yourself? Please read the following passage.
Escaping a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save you life. It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone in the family, such as stairways and fire escapes, but not lifts.
From the lower floors of the buildings, escaping through windows is possible; learn the best way of leaving by windows with the least chance of serious injury.
The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. An average(平均) person, hanging by the finger-tips will have a drop of about six feet to the ground. It is about the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.
Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed, or smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to make sure that you get fresh air rather than smoke that may leaked(渗) into the room.
On a second or third floor, the best windows for escape are those that open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto cement(水泥) might end in injury. Bushes(灌木丛) and grass can help to break a fall. It is important to _______.
A.put out the fire in the burning house | B.know the ways to escape the fire |
C.jump off a burning house | D.keep the door closed |
It is possible to escape through the windows _______.
A.if there are some bushes on the ground |
B.if you are strong enough |
C.if you live on a lower floor |
D.If you have a long rope |

A.You can escape through stairways. |
B.You can choose fire escapes. |
C.Escape from the windows that open onto a roof. |
D.Use a lift to come down at once. |

Halloween falls on October 31st. It is one of the favourite festivals for children in the West. People dress up in different costumes like a witch, a ghost(鬼) or a skeleton (骷髅). The children go to houses to say “Trick or treat!” The game is so fun. Before, if a child is bad, he or she will get a trick like having a stone in his or her bag instead of (代替) some candy.
