Prana was a beautiful dog, whose name means “breath of life”. Although he died several years ago, I can still remember the days we spent together and what he has taught me about love.
I have two apple trees in the garden. Prana loved apples. When he went outside, he’d catch an apple and take it into the house to eat later. The apples had been on the ground and were often dirty so I wasn’t always happy that Prana had brought them into the house.
It was an autumn day in America, but it was very cold. A big snow fell and we had not done anything for its coming. On that special day, Prana went outside and I watched him through the window. I noticed that he was madly digging(挖) holes and bringing the apples to the ground so they could be seen above the snow. I did not know why he was doing this. He seemed to want to do something special.
When I called him back, he had his usual one apple in his mouth. About five minutes later, I looked outside. The garden was completely covered with birds. Prana had dug up all those apples for his bird friends to eat. He knew that they wouldn’t have stored enough food for the coming winter! Prana was.

Many people are so busy these days that they have no time to cook at home. This becomes a problem because most families love home cooking! The food tastes good and a family meal can bring everyone together. In some families, meals are often the only chance everyone gets to see each other at the same time during the day.
Another reason people enjoy home cooking is that it is a way of showing love. A parent who makes some cookies is not just satisfying a child’s sweet tooth. He or she is sending a message (信息). The message says, “I care about you enough to spend an hour making cookies that you will eat up in 15 minutes if I let you.” There is also something about the smell of home cooking. The smell of cooking makes people happy. It makes most of us feel good and loved--even if we’re the ones doing the cooking! Next time you smell a cake making, stop for a moment and pay attention to your mood (心情,心境).Why do many people have no time to cook?

My tears run down from my cheeks (面颊) when I talk to my parents on the phone. What are they doing when I call them? Dad works from seven o’clock in the morning to nine o’clock in the evening. My mum does all the housework, she also has to work in the field. But I can’t do anything for them.
Every day she gets up at around 4 o’clock in the morning. When I sometimes call her at 7:30 in the evening, she tells me that she is still in the field and doesn’t have supper. I tell her I’ll study hard in the school. I also ask her to take care of herself and dad because I can’t live without them.
Mum says that the happiest time for dad and her is when my sister and I come back home.
We play cards in the room, watch TV, or do anything we like, with dad and mum making delicious food in the kitchen. It is also the happiest time for me.

People like to say “Thank you” when others help them or say something kind for them. It is a very good habit.
You should say “Thank you” when someone walking ahead of you keeps the door open for you, when someone says you have done your work well, or you have bought a nice thing, or your city is beautiful. We can use “Thank you” not only between friends, but also between parents and children, brothers and sisters.
“Excuse me” is another short sentence we often use. When you hear someone say so behind you, you know that somebody wants to walk pass you without touching you.
