What is “American” food ? To many people , American food means hamburgers, hot dogs , and fried chicken . However , are those the only kinds of food in the U.S.?
Except for Thanksgiving turkey , it’s hard to find a typical “American” food . The United States is a land of immigrants(移民) . When people move to America , they bring their cooking styles with them . So Americans eat food from many different countries. That’s why you can find almost all kinds of ethnic (异国风味的) food in America, such as Italian pizza , Mexican tacos (墨西哥饼) and Chinese fried rolls. But they don’t taste quite like the real taste of the food .
As a large country-style cooking, take a trip to New England and try seafood dishes , and travel through the Midwest for baked food.
Now Americans live at a fast speed and often have some fast food. One of the most common quick American meals is sandwiches . Some Americans also choose to eat unhealthy food, but others prefer “all natural” eating habits. They refuse to eat any food with additives(添加剂).
American culture is a good example of the saying : “You are what you eat.” The different kinds of food show the different kinds of personal taste . Anyway , it’s all American.

Once there was a forest where all the animals lived happily together . One day a family went to spend the day in the forest , and the son left his socks there . After the family left , a bear came by , found the socks , and decided to try them on. They fit so well , and he liked them so much that he wouldn’t take them off.
All the animals talked about the bear’s new look . Soon , in that forest, there began appearing squirrels (松鼠) in shirts , rabbits in shoes , and even rats wearing hats! The forest doctor shook his head , telling animals , “This can’t be good .!” But no one listened to him. They said he was just out of fashion .
However , it wasn’t long the first results of fashion-fever came. Several times the squirrel caught his shirt on trees , stopping him in mid-jump and sending him falling to the ground from a tree. The rat couldn’t go into his hole without taking off his hat first . Even the bear , because of his socks , slipped (滑倒) from the river rock and almost killed himself.
When the animals came to see the doctor, he gave them all the same advice, “Take off those clothes before one day they are going to kill you.” Those who listened to the doctor’s advice stopped having accidents . And the animals realized that they didn’t need clothes at all . Starting to wear them had been very dangerous , and they had only done it to make others admire them , and to get attention.

Dreams are expressions of thoughts, feelings and events that pass through our mind while we are sleeping.Everybody dreams. But only some people remember their dreams. Our dreams often include all the senses-smells,sounds,sights,tastes and things we touch. We dream in colour.Sometimes we dream the same dream over and over again. These repeated dreams are often unpleasant. They may even be nightmares-bad dreams that frighten us.
Early in the twentieth century, two famous scientists developed their personal ideas about dreams.Austrian psychiatrist Sigmund Freud published a book called “The Interpretation(诠释)of Dreams” in l 900.Freud believed people often dream about things they want but can’t have. These dreams often have something to do with sex and aggression(侵犯).Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung worked closely with Freud for several years, but he believed dreams could help people grow and understand themselves. He believed dreams provide solutions(解答)to problems we face when we are awake. He didn’t believe dreams hide our feelings about sex or aggression.Today we know more about the science of dreaming because researchers can take pictures of people’s brains while they are sleeping.
Other researchers are studying how dreaming helps our bodies work with problems and very sad emotions(感情).Robert Stickgold is a professor of psychiatry at Harvard University in Massachusetts.Doctor Stickgold says that when we dream, the brain is trying to make sense of the world. He does not agree with Sigmund Freud that dreaming is the way we express our hidden feelings and desires(愿望).
Scientists believe it is important to keep researching dreams.Doctor Stickgold says it has been more than one hundred years since Sigmund Freud published his important book about dreaming:Yet there is still no agreement on exactly how the brain works when we are dreaming or why we dream.

Maybe you have seen this in schools:some students are studying nearly all the time but they just pass their exams, while some others may spend much less time on their books but do much better in exams. How could this happen? People used to think that hard work is the only way to success. But now they have understood that smart work can make them succeed, too.
Hard workers don’t mind working for long hours, while smart workers always think of several different answers to these question,“Why should I suffer this?” “Isn’t there a better way to do this?” Thanks to these people,we can use computers instead of the abacus now.Progress in every field is the direct result of “try to find a better way” by smart workers.
There was a large soap factory in Japan.Once it received an unusual letter from someone who complained that there was no soap in the soapbox he bought.
How could empty soapboxes go out of the factory? The engineers checked the producing and packing. The producing was fine, but in about one in ten thousand cases, the packing machine(机器)let an empty soapbox go.There was no need to spend a lot of money repairing the machine for such a small problem. The engineer soon worked out a solution, he put a huge X-ray machine and two large computers to find out the empty soapboxes. After teaching the workers how to use it,he sat down in his seat, exhausted.
“Sir,we could have solved the problems in a much simpler and cheaper way,”a worker said.“Really? How?”
“We can put a huge fan near the packing machine. The wind coming from the fan will blow away the empty boxes。leaving the other boxes with soap.”
See,this is smart work.In order to succeed,we should not only work hard like the engineer, but also think smart like this worker.
