Fish have ears. Really. They're quite small and have no opening to the outside world carrying sound through the body. For the past seven years, Simon Thorrold, a university professor, has been examining fish ears, small round ear bones called otoliths.
As fish grow, so do their otoliths. Each day, their otoliths gain a ring of calcium carbonate(碳酸钙).By looking through a microscope and counting these rings, Thorrold can determine the exact age of a young fish. As a fish gets older, its otoliths no longer get daily rings. Instead, they get yearly rings, which can also be counted, giving information about the fish's age, just like the growth rings of a tree.
Ring counting is nothing new to fish scientists. But Thorrold has turned to a new direction. They're examining the chemical elements of each otolith ring.
The daily ring gives us the time, but chemistry tells us about the environment in which the fish swam on any given day. These elements tell us about the chemistry of the water that the fish was in. It also says something about water temperature, which determines how much of these elements will gather within each otolith ring.
Thorrold can tell, for example, if a fish spent time in the open ocean before entering the less salty water of coastal areas. He can basically tell where fish are spending their time at any given stage of history.
In the case of the Atlantic croaker, a popular saltwater food fish, Thorrold and his assistant have successfully followed the travelling of young fish from mid-ocean to the coast, a journey of many hundreds of miles.
This is important to managers in the fish industry, who know nearly nothing about the whereabouts of the young fish for most food fish in the ocean. Eager to learn about his technology, fish scientists are now lending Thorrold their ears. What can we learn about fish ears from the text?
A.They are small soft rings. |
B.They are openings only on food fish. |
C.They are not seen from the outside. |
D.They are not used to receive sound. |
Why does the writer compare the fish to trees?
A.Trees gain a growth ring each day. |

C.Their growth rings are very small. |
D.They both have growth rings. |
The Atlantic croaker is ___________.

C.an ocean area | D.a fish |
Why is it important to study the chemistry of otolith rings?

B.Chemical contents of otoliths can tell how fast fish can swim. |
C.We can know more about fish and their living environment. |
D.Scientists can know exactly how old a fish is. |
How would you understand “fish scientists are now lending Thorrold their ears”?
A.They are very interested in Thorrold's research findings. |
B.They want to know where they can find fish. |
C.They lend their fish for chemical studies. |
D.They wonder if Thorrold can find growth rings from their ears. |
Fat and shy, Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports team. “Football, tennis, cricket — anything with a round ball, I was useless,” he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the one always made fun of in school gym classes in Devonshire, England.
It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him. At first he went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to ride the bike along with a runner friend. Gradually, Saunders set up his mind on building up his body, increasing his speed and strength. At the age of 18, he ran his first marathon.
The following year he met John Ridgway and started to work as a teacher at Ridgway’s school of adventure(冒险)in Scotland, where he learnt about Ridgway’s cold—waterexploits. Greatly interested, Saunders read all he could about North Pole explorers and adventures; he decided that this would be his future.
In 2001, after becoming a skillful skier, Saunders started his first long—distance expedition (探险) towards the North Pole. It took unbelievable energy. He suffered frostbite, ran into a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit, pulling his sled up and over the rocky mountains.
Saunders has become the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and he’s skied more of the North Pole by himself than any other British man. His old playmates would not believe the change. According to Paragraph 2, what changed Saunders?
A.A friend’s words. | B.A mountain bike. |
C.His 18th birthday gift. | D.His first marathon. |
What did Saunders do in 2001?
A.He decided to build up his body. |
B.He met John Ridgway in Scotland. |
C.He worked as a teacher at school. |
D.He took an adventure to the North Pole. |
What does the story mainly tell us about Saunders?
A.He is a success in sports. |
B.He is the youngest British skier. |
C.He is Ridgway’s best student. |
D.He is a good teacher at school. |

If the child has been brought up in a loving, openly communicative environment, the relationship with parents would be a strong one.It is only when there are ongoing troubles in the relationship between parents and the child that there is a breakdown in communication.
When parents are going through difficulties in their own relationship, the child sometimes develops guilt. The child can hold himself or herself responsible for the breakdown in relationship between the parents. This needs to be explained to the child, who won’t speak out this guilt.
The teenage years are emotionally sensitive years to the outside world. For the first time the child realizes his or her position in society.Friends suddenly become more important than parents. It is during this time that the relationship between children and parents is tested. If the bond with parents is strong, the child will not be influenced by the drug and alcohol culture. If the bond is weaker, the child will end up with problems.
During such times, one of the effective ways to deal with the problems is to discuss the problem with the child. As parents, you will need to discuss the results of each choice and then leave the final decision to the child.Forcing parental will on children is counterproductive (适得其反的), especially at this age.Forcing parental will at this time will stop communicating and then you will not know what is happening in their life.Whatever the problem is, the child need never be made to feel lonely. The moment that happens, the possibility of serious self-harm is raised.
Any problem at this age can be dealt with by a flexible (灵活的) way by parents.Discuss things calmly.Leave the decision to the individual.Make yourself available for any help or support that the child hopes. The child will feel comfortable when allowed the freedom of choice. If parents have trouble with their relationship, the child__________ .

D.will help the parents recover |
According to the text, what will lead the child to get into trouble?
A.The sense of responsibility. |
B.A weak bond with parents. |
C.Feeling depressed or stressed |

A.Letting the children be. |
B.Discussing it with the children. |
C.Forcing parental will on them |
D.Meeting their demands. |

C.Understanding. | D.Losing. |
What is the text mainly about?
A.The bond between parents and children. |
