In Britain you’re allowed to drive a car when you’re seventeen. You have to get a special two-year driving license before you can start. When you’re learning, someone with a full license always has to be in the car with you because you aren’t allowed to drive the car on the road alone. You don’t have to go to a driving school --- a friend can teach you. The person with you isn’t allowed to take money for the lesson unless he’s got a teacher’s license.
Before you’re allowed to have a full license, you have to take a driving test. You can take a test in your own car, but it has to be fit for the road. In the test you have to drive round for about half an hour and then answer a few questions. If you don’t pass the test, you’re allowed to take it again a few weeks later if you want to. In 1970 a woman passed her fortieth test after 212 driving lessons! When you’ve passed your test, you don’t have to take it again, and you’re allowed to go on driving as long as you like. Britain’s oldest driver was a man who drove in 1974 at the age of 100.
Before 1904 everyone was allowed to drive, even children. Then from 1904 car drivers had to have a license. But they didn’t have to take a test until 1935. Very few people enjoy exams. I don’t, either. And although I tell myself not to worry about them, I always do! So I’m not surprised that my students worry about them, too, even though they usually don’t need to. Because they are afraid of failing. However, since it is hard not to worry at all, we all must try not to worry too much. Why? Because worrying makes exams worse! How to do this?
Ask the teacher about how to revise and about exam skills—how to work when you are in the exam. Good students don’t wait until the week before an exam. They study all through the year. It is not possible to learn everything at the last minute. So don’t leave it till then.
If you start planning and working for each exam early and you make sure that you understand what you’re studying, then, when it is over, you’ll be able to say, “What a good exam that was!”
Take a short rest during your time of work and revision. If your mind is tired, it won’t remember well. Work at the time when you know you’ll work at your best.
If you’re studying in the evening, don’t go straight to bed afterwards. Your mind will still be “going round and round”—thinking too much. Do something else, maybe walk or get exercise. Choose something that will relax you, and make you think of other things.
If you feel bad, talk to someone about your worries. But don’t be too relaxed! Some stress over exams makes you work hard for them. How does the writer feel about exams?
A.Excited. | B.Bored. | C.Worried. | D.Surprised. |
Why are the students afraid of exams?
A.Because they are afraid of failing. |
B.Because they want to get full marks. |
C.Because exams are usually hard. |
D.Because their teachers will be angry at their bad grades. |
Which is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A.Good students don’t wait until the week before an exam. |

In China, many people are leaving the countryside to find jobs in the cities, because the countryside is much poorer than the city, and often there isn’t much work there. Services such as hospital and transport are usually much better in the city than in the countryside. They hope that their lives will improve when they move to the city.
①But in the big cities of Europe like London or Paris, people are moving out of the city. These rich families want to live a quieter life. They are tired of (厌倦) the noise and the dirt of the city, and they are tired of the crowded streets, crowded trains and buses. They don’t want to live in the cities any more. You want to know about my staying in America, right? Well, to tell you the truth, it is really an eye-opening experience to study here.
In China, I had English classes five times a week since fifth grade. However, I didn’t know how different textbook English could be from everyday English until I came to Hotchkiss School, Connecticut.
When I first studied English, I was told to say, “I am fine.” when people say “How are you?” But in the US, I found that people say, “I am good.” or “I’m tired.”
One day, someone greeted me with “What’s up?” It made me confused(不知所措). I thought for a moment and then smiled because I didn’t know what to say.
Since then, I have discovered more and more differences between Chinese and US cultures.
To my surprise, US girls spend a lot of time in the burning sun to get a tan(晒黑). However, in China, girls try every possible way to get their skin paler, or “whiter”.
I was also surprised by how hard-working US students are.
In China, schoolwork is almost everything, so we study hard and that’s it. But here, a “good” student gets good grades, does a lot for the public and plays sports or music.
The kids here are so talented, I am starting to be sorry that I gave up playing the piano at an early age and that I have never thought about sports.According to the writer, textbook English is ______ everyday English.
A.quite different from | B.the same as |
