There was once a spider(蜘蛛) that lived in a cornfield (玉米田). She liked this home and planned to stay there for the rest of her life.
One day, the spider caught a little bug in her web. Just as the spider was about to eat him, the bug said: “If you let me go, I will tell you something important that can save your life.”
The spider thought for a little while and listened. “You’d better get out of this cornfield,” the little bug said. “The harvest is coming!”
“I think you are just telling me a story,” the spider said with a smile.
“Oh no, it is true,” the little bug said. “All the stalks (茎杆) will be knocked down, and the corn will be gathered up. You will be killed by the giant machines if you stay here.”
“I don’t believe you,” the spider said as she ate the little bug for lunch.
A few days later, the spider was laughing about the story the little bug had told her. She thought to herself: “A harvest! What a silly idea. I have lived here all of my life, and nothing has ever disturbed (打扰) me.”

Almost every Chinese person can recite the two lines of the famous poem, “Every grain on the plate comes from hard work.” But sadly, many of us don’t actually get the real meaning of these lines: Don’t waste food. A CCTV program, News One Plus One, reported that the food Chinese people throw away every year is enough to feed 200 million people for a year. Do we have too much food? Of course not. According to the UN World Food Program, there were 925 million hungry people around the world in 2010, especially in developing countries. Six million children die of hunger every year. Chinese people are well known for being hospitable and generous. Many even feel that they lose face if their guests have eaten all the food on the table. Luckily, a number of people have realized the importance of saving food. Last November, Li Hong, a waitress in a restaurant in Nanjing, got fired because she took some leftover food home for her son. Many people stood by her side and criticized the waste of food. What should we do in our daily lives to waste less food? Here are some tips:
1. Do not order too much in a restaurant. Only order as much as you want to eat. If you cannot eat all the food you ordered, take the rest of it home.
2. Don’t be too picky about food. Some food may not taste great, but your body needs it.

Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are busy trying to earn money in order to pay the high tuition for my brother and me. They don't act in the romantic way that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion. “I love you” is too luxurious(奢侈的)for them to say. Sending flowers to each other on Valentine's Day is even more out of the question. Finally my father has a bad temper when he's very tired from the hard work, it is easy for him to lose his temper.
One day, my mother was sewing a quilt. I silently sat down beside her and looked at her.
“Mom. I have a question to ask you.” I said after a while.
“What?” She replied, still doing her work.
“Is there love between you and Dad?” I asked her in a very low voice.
My mother stopped her work and raised her head with surprise in her eyes, She didn't answer immediately. Then she bowed her head and continued to sew the quilt.
I was very worried because I thought I had hurt her. I was in a great embarrassment and I didn’t know what to do. But at last I heard my mother say the following words:
“Susan,” she said thoughtfully. “Look at this thread. Sometimes it appears, but most of it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt strong and durable(结实). The story of this little book began when the brothers were still in school. And it started with a good teacher. The teacher liked to find out how things happened. Soon the two brothers were doing the same thing. They asked questions and then looked for answers.
Among the questions the brothers asked, “Who made up the old fairy tales? Who first told about Cinderella ? Why made up the story of the Snow White and the story of Sleeping Beauty?”They found that no one knew the answers to such questions. The tales were made up in very early times. Most of them were made up in the days before people knew how to write. People told the stories to one another and to their children. But only a few old people still remembered them.
“When old people die, the stories will die with them,” said the brothers. “We must write down all the stories we can find.”
Jacob and William hunted for stories for five years. At last they had 89 tales written. Just before Christmas in 1812, the first book was published.
