I was driving home on a very hot afternoon and about to near a crossing(十字路口). One of the major traffic light had gone out , and a police officer was standing in the middle of around twenty lanes of very busy traffic . I saw a drugstore on the comer , and while I was there , I wanted so badly to get some water for the officer ! I had some hesitation(犹豫), though , as it was a little out of my comfort zone(安全区)to communicate with a stranger in this way .
I discussed , struggled , left , drove part-way home , turned around , went back to the drugstore , got water , and then found myself thinking about how to hand it to him in the busy crossing . I knew that he might not be able to take it – he wouldn’t have hands to hold it since he was busy making motions(动作)to direct(指挥)the traffic – but I had to try .
I drove into the crossing , rolled down my windows as I passed the officer , and gave him the bottle of water . Though he wasn’t able to take the bottle , he broke into a smile and said , “ Thank you . ”
I drove home , feeling better for having persisted(坚持). And I was even inspired to call the station that afternoon to make sure they knew what a great job he did that day . One day at the end of the class, a wise teacher told each of her students to bring a plastic bag and a bag of potatoes to school.
The next day she told her students, “From today on, for every person you don’t like in your lives, you can choose a potato, write the person’s name and the date on it and then put it in the plastic bag.” Day after day, some of the students’ bags were very heavy. They were then told to carry this bag with them everywhere they went for a week. They would put it inside their quilts at night, on the seats when sitting in a car or on a bus, and next to their desks at school. The days carrying the bag around with them made students get to know what a weight they were carrying in their minds. They had to pay attention to it all the time so that they wouldn’t forget it. Note-taking is a skill that can help you do well in all your schoolwork. It can make you confident when you are studying. But unluckily, most students don’t know how to take notes.
★Write down key facts. If your teacher writes notes on the blackboard, that’s great. You can copy them or write down the most important facts of all in class. Different teachers do things differently. For example, some teachers may focus on (关注) lots of dates and facts in class, but they only write the important ones on the blackboard. Other teachers may not write anything down, but they may say something important again and again.
★Ask. Don’t be afraid to ask your teacher to repeat what you miss. If your teacher speaks too fast and you can’t follow what he is saying, you can ask him after class.
★Compare. Comparing your notes with your classmates’ can be good for your learning. It can also help you and your classmates correct some mistakes.
★Organize(组织). Note-taking also needs organization. Keep notes for each subject in one notebook, so that you can find everything easily when a test comes.

You have waited 45 minutes for the valuable 10 minutes’ break. But when the bell for the next class rings, you can’t believe how quickly time has passed. If you have this experience, you’ll know how time flies when you are having fun and drags when you are bored. Now scientists have come up with a reason why this happens.
They have found that the brain changes its way to work according to how we direct our attention to a task. When we are bored, we pay more attention to how time is passing. And this makes our brains think the clock is ticking more slowly.
Recently some researchers who want to understand the conditions carried out an experiment. In the experiment, twelve volunteers watched a picture while researchers monitored(关注)their brain activity.
The volunteers were told to first notice how long a picture appeared, then the color of the picture, and thirdly, study the both. The results showed that the brain was more active when the volunteers paid attention to more subjects.
It is thought that if the brain is busy noticing many aspects(方面)of a task, it has to spread its resources, and pays less attention to the clock. Therefore, time seems to go quickly. If the brain is not so active, it spends its full energy on the passing of time. As a result, time seems to move slowly.
Next time you feel bored in class, perhaps you should concentrate(专心于) on what the teacher is saying. What does the underlined word “drags” probably mean?

C.moves actively | D.goes silently |
