While we are still children ,most of us live at home with our parents, more or less peacefully . But as we become teenagers , things change ,and we begin to grow apart from our parents . This means we are almost ready to leave the house where we grew up and make a new home of our own .
All humans must do this ,but they don’t all do it in the same way . If ,for instance ,you belong to a primitive tribe (原始部落) ,then as you grew up ,you’d learn the skills you needed as an adult---how to catch fish ,how to keep the house and look after children . You would be ready to marry in your early teens and you would build a house and live near your family in the village.
This seems a very old way of life , but it is what humans have been used to through hundreds of years. And it is what we are still used to in the 21st century ,for man hasn’t changed in the short time since he became civilized(文明的). But could you leave home and look after yourself during the teen years ? Most people would not do very well . Why ? Because although man hasn’t changed very much , the society he lives in has changed greatly ,which means that we have to learn more and more before we are ready to leave our parents’ shelter( 居所 ) and live alone .
However ,sometimes it is very frustrating to live at parents’ home . Parents can be very upset about late nights ,criticizing friends and always saying that we are noisy and dirty . But we still need our emotional (情感的) shelter till we finish our studies , and that is why we usually stay in our parents’ home until we feel grown up enough to deal with living alone .

If the child has been brought up in a loving, openly communicative environment, the relationship with parents would be a strong one.It is only when there are ongoing troubles in the relationship between parents and the child that there is a breakdown in communication.
When parents are going through difficulties in their own relationship, the child sometimes develops guilt. The child can hold himself or herself responsible for the breakdown in relationship between the parents. This needs to be explained to the child, who won’t speak out this guilt.
The teenage years are emotionally sensitive years to the outside world. For the first time the child realizes his or her position in society.Friends suddenly become more important than parents. It is during this time that the relationship between children and parents is tested. If the bond with parents is strong, the child will not be influenced by the drug and alcohol culture. If the bond is weaker, the child will end up with problems.
During such times, one of the effective ways to deal with the problems is to discuss the problem with the child. As parents, you will need to discuss the results of each choice and then leave the final decision to the child.Forcing parental will on children is counterproductive (适得其反的), especially at this age.Forcing parental will at this time will stop communicating and then you will not know what is happening in their life.Whatever the problem is, the child need never be made to feel lonely. The moment that happens, the possibility of serious self-harm is raised.
Any problem at this age can be dealt with by a flexible (灵活的) way by parents.Discuss things calmly.Leave the decision to the individual.Make yourself available for any help or support that the child hopes. The child will feel comfortable when allowed the freedom of choice. If parents have trouble with their relationship, the child__________ .

The expression “down to earth” means being open and honest. It is easy to get on with some one who is down to earth. A down-to-earth person is the opposite of someone who acts important or proud.
Down-to-earth people could be important members of society. But they do not consider themselves to be better than others who are less important. A person who is filled with his own importance and pride is said to“ have his nose in the air”.
Americans use another expression that is similar in some ways to down to earth. The expression is“ both feet on the ground”. Someone with both feet on the ground is a person with a good understanding of reality. He may have dreams, but he does not allow them to have influence on his understanding of what is real.
The opposite kind of person is one who “has his head in the clouds”. Someone with his head in the clouds is a person whose mind is not on what is happening in real life. Such a person may be called a day-dreamer.
When we have both our feet on the ground, and when we are down to earth, we do not have our noses in the air. We act honestly and openly to others. Our lives are like the ground below us---solid and strong.A down-to-earth person could be _____.
A.social and proud | B.good and opposite |

Not all memories (记忆)are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Wars and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and mental scars. Often they appear again in dreams.
Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill(药丸), which will help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce(减少), or possibly erase(抹去) the effect of sad memories.
In November, some scientists tested a drug(药) on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body producing chemicals(化学品) that fix memories in the brain. So far the research has suggested that only the mental effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are erased.
The research has caused plenty of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it.
Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers’ troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.
“Some memories can destroy(破坏) people’s lives. They come back to you when you don’t want to have them in a dream. They usually come with very sad feeling.” said Roger Pitman, a scientist of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. “This could relieve(减轻) a lot of that suffering.”
But those who are against the research say that it is very dangerous to change memories because memories give us our identity(特质). They also help us all get away from the mistakes of the past.
“All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were terrible at the time but make us who we are. I’m not sure we want to erase those memories,” said Rebecca Dresser. The passage is mainly about __________.
A.a new medical invention |

C.Experiencing bad events makes us different from others. |
D.The pill will reduce people’s sufferings from bad memories. |
