42 they entered the classroom. The professor passed out the papers. And smiles appeared on the students’ faces as they 43 there were only five questions.
Three hours had passed before the professor began to 44 the papers. The students no longer looked confident. On their faces was a frightened expression. Papers in hand, no one spoke as the professor 45 the class.
He looked at the worried faces before him, and then asked: “How many completed all five questions?” 46a hand was raised.
“How many answered four?” Still no hands.
“Three? Two?” The students 47 restlessly(不安地) in their seats.
“One, then? Certainly somebody finished one.” But the class remained 48 .
The professor put down the papers. “That is exactly what I 49 ,” he said. “I just want you to 50 you that, even although you have completed four years of engineering, there are still many things about the 51 you don’t know. These questions you couldn’t answer are relatively common in everyday 52 .” Then smiling, he 53 , “You will all pass this course, but remember—even though you are now college graduates, your education has just 54 .”
The years have 55 the name of the professor, but not the lesson he taught.

When Mike told me he was leaving I felt like a vase which had just broken. There were pieces of me all over the tidy floor. He kept talking, telling me why he was leaving, 31it was for the best, I could do better, it was his 32and not mine. I had heard it before many times and yet somehow was still hurt; perhaps one cannot 33such pain.
He left and I tried to 34my life. I filled the kettle (水壶), put it on to boil, took out my old red cup and 35the coffee powder falling into the bone china. Somehow when the kettle piped its finishing warning, I 36not to hear it. That’s what Mike’s leaving had been like, sudden and with a(n) 37end. I would rather just 38in uncertainty than have things finished. I laughed at myself. Just about a cup of coffee, I must be getting 39.
And yet it was a young woman who 40back at me from the mirror, a young woman full of 41and hope, a young woman with bright eyes just waiting to see the world. 42, there are more important things. More important than 43, I insist to myself firmly. The lid goes back on the coffee just like closing on the whole Mike experience.
He didn’t 44my dreams as I feared that night. 45, I am flying far across fields and woods, 46on those below me. I fly free until I meet another bird who flies with me in perfect harmony. I realize with some 47that there is a bird out there for me, there is another person, not necessarily a lover perhaps just a 48, but there is someone out there who is my soul mate. I think about being a broken 49again and realize that I have gathered myself back together, what Mike has is 50a little part of my time in earth, a little understanding of my physical being. He has merely, a little piece of me.

My friend John always has something to tell me. He knows so much that 21 men have to have older and more worldly wise men to tell them, 22 , who to trust, how to care for others and how to live life 23 the fullest.
Recently, John lost his 24 Janet. For eight years she fought against cancer, but in the end her sickness had the last 25 . One day John took out a folded piece of 26 from his wallet. He had found it, so he told me, when he 27 up some drawers at home.
It was a 28 love letter Janet had written. The note could look like a school girl’s scrawls(潦草地写,乱涂) about her dream guy. 29 the letter was written by a woman who had had seven children, a woman who fought for her life and who 30 only had a few months left to live.
It was 31a beautiful recipe (处方,食谱) for how to keep a marriage together. Janet’s 32 of her husband begins like this, “Loved me. Took care of me. Worried about me.”
“Helped me when I was ill.” The next 33 reads. After that she turned 34 the paper and added “Warmth. Humor. Kindness. Thoughtfulness.” And then she writes about the husband she has 35 with and loved most in her life. “ 36 there when I needed you.” The last words she wrote 37 all the others. I can see her for me when she added thoughtfully “Good friend.”
I stand beside John now, and cannot pretend to know how it feels to lose someone who is as close to 38 as Janet was to him. I need to 39 what he has to say much more than he needs to talk.
“John,” I ask. “How do you stick together with someone through 38 years—not to mention the sickness? How do I know 40 I can bear to stand by my wife’s side if she becomes sick one day?”
“You can.” he says quietly, “ If you love her enough, you can.”

There are many different ways of seeing a town for the first time. One of them is to walk around it, guide-book 36 hand. Of course, we may 37 with our guide-books the history and 38 developments of a town and get to know them. 39 then, if we take out time and40 in a town for a while, we may get to know it better. When we 41 it as a whole, we begin to have some 42 ,which even the best guide-books do not answer. Why is the town just43 this, this shape, this plan, this size? Why do its streets 44in this particular way, and not in any 45 way?
Here even the best guide-book 46 us. One can’t find in it the information about how a town has developed to the 47 appearance. It may not describe the original (最初的) 48 of a town. However, one may get some idea of what it 49 look like by walking around the town. One can also imagine 50 the town was first planned and built . Then one can learn more about in what direction the town 51 to develop.
What is the 52 of studying towns in the way? For me, it is 53 that one gets a greater depth of pleasure by visiting and seeing a town with one’s own eyes. A 54 visit to a town may help one better understand why it is attractive 55 just reading about it in a guide-book.
