When asked to list typical English gentlemen, for many,Colin Firth immediately comes to mind.
In his recent film,Kingsman:The Secret Service, the 54-year-old actor appears as elegant and violent super spy Harry Hart. One minute he’s calm and polite, and then in the next he’s skillfully violent and aggressive. For example,in one scene he says,“Manners maketh a man”,before severely beating up a group of villains(坏人).Firth brings out the perfect mix of typical British style and humor through this performance.
Firth began appearing on English TV in the early 1990s,but it wasn’t until he played Mr Darcy,a charming upper class character from Jane Austen’s famous novel“Pride and Prejudice”,that Firth’s career really took off.His portrayal(形象)of the perfect fictional gentleman conquered millions of hearts, especially females’.
In many fans and critics’eyes,Firth has British good looks,British charm, and a gift for characters with a British sense of being reserved(矜持).Movie reviewer Jason O’Bryan described Firth as“always befitting the calm and stiff-upper-lip British gentlemen character”.
However Firth doesn’t consider himself the authority on gentlemen.“I don’t necessarily approach every challenge like a perfect English gentleman spy. There are many aspects in my personality that are not consistent with someone like Harry Hart,”he said to Dialogue,an English—language show on CCTV News.
But let’s just take his words as another gentlemanly quality-modesty.After all,who might expect an Oscar-winning actor over 50 years old to learn to fight for his first action movie?
To prepare for Kingsman,Firth trained for three hours every day over six months. He broke a tooth and got bruised everywhere, but took the damage as a symbol of his accomplishments.
In Dialogue,Firth said he had many other sides-he’s passionate about literature and literary research. However,to many of his movie fans, he is indeed a gentleman and excellent actor above a11 else. The example given in Paragraph 2 is _____________.

Driving a car is not just handing controls and judging speed and distance. It requires you to predict what other road users will do and get ready to react to something unexpected. When alcohol is consumed, it enters your bloodstream and acts as a depressant(抑制药), damaging eyesight, judgement and co-ordination(协调), slowing down reaction time and greatly increasing the risk of accidents. Even below the drink driving limit, driving will be affected.
Alcohol may take a few minutes to be absorbed into the bloodstream and start action on the brain. Absorption rate is increased when drinking on an empty stomach or when consuming drinks mixed with fruit juice. To get rid of alcohol from the body is a very slow process and it is not possible to speed it up with any measures like taking a shower or having a cup of tea or coffee.
The present Road Traffic Ordinance states clearly that the limit of alcohol concentration is:
·50 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of blood; or
·22 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath; or
·67 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of urine(尿液).
Drivers who cause traffic accidents, or who commit a moving traffic offence or are being suspected of drink driving will be tested.
Any driver found drinking beyond the limit will be charged. The driver declared guilty may be fined a maximum of HK$25,000 and be sentenced to up to 3 years in prison and punished for 10 driving-offence points; or temporarily banned from driving.
The same punishment applies to failing to provide specimens(样本) for breath, blood or urine tests without good excuse.
Drink driving is a criminal offence. Be a responsible driver, think before you drink. For the safety of yourself and other road users, never drive after consuming alcohol. The first paragraph is mainly about.
A.the introduction of driving skills |
B.the damage of drinking to your body |
C.the effect of drinking on driving |
D.the process of alcohol being absorbed |
The underlined word “it” in the second paragraph refers to “”.

A.Drinking below the drink driving limit has no effect on driving. |
B.Alcohol is taken in more quickly when drunk with fruit juice. |
C.Having a cup of tea helps to get rid of alcohol from the body. |
D.50 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of breath is below the drink driving limit. |

The search for life in the universe took a step forward last month with the opening of the Allen Telescope Array(艾伦望远镜阵列) in Hat Creek, California. The telescopes were partly made possible by a gift of twenty-five million dollars from Paul Allen. The total cost of the project is already fifty million dollars.
At present, there are 42 radio telescopes working at the Hat Creek observatory. The signals they receive are combined to create what is equal to a single, very large telescope. The telescope will be used to observe objects like exploding stars, black holes and other objects that are predicted but have not yet been observed. Seth Shostak of the SETI Institute says this is the first telescope whose main purpose is to search for signals from intelligent life in space. The SETI Institute is based in Mountain View, California. The organization supports the search for other life forms in the universe.
What makes the Allen Telescope Array unusual is that it can collect and study information from a wide area of the sky. In addition, the 42 telescopes can study information about several projects at the same time. That means studies of large areas of the sky can be made faster than ever before.
Some officials think the Allen Telescope Array will be completed in three more years. 350 individual radio telescopes are planned. The new abilities of the Allen Telescope Array will make searching for stars similar to the sun much faster.
An earlier search by SETI, Project Phoenix, studied about 800 stars to a distance of 240 light years. The project ended in 2004. With the Allen Telescope Array, astronomers hope to gather thousands of times more information in the search for life beyond our planet. The main purpose of the Allen Telescope Array is .
A.to serve for the research of weather predication |
B.to prepare for the wars against life from the universe |
C.to search for signals from intelligent life in space |

John Blanchard was studying the crowd making their way through the station. He was looking for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn' t, the girl with the rose.
When reading a book in a Florida library a year before, John became interested not in the contents of the book, but in the notes penciled in the margin (空白处). The handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and beautiful mind. He discovered the former owner' s name in the front of the book: Miss Hollis Maynell.
He located her address and wrote a letter introducing himself. The next day he was shipped overseas to serve in the army. During the next year, they grew to know each other through the mail and their friendship developed. When the day finally came for him to return home, their first meeting was suggested--7:00 pm. at the Grand Central Station in New York.
She wrote," You' ll recognize me by the red rose I wear on my coat. "So now John was in the station to meet the girl with a rose.
As a pretty and slim girl in green came over, John noticed her blue eyes like flowers in spring. He walked directly towards her , entirely forgetting she was not wearing a rose. As John came closer to her, he saw another woman with a red rose stood nearby. Well past 40, this woman had graying hair done under a worn hat. Seeing the girl in green walk quickly away, John felt as if he were split(劈开) in two. He desired to follow that girl, but longed for the woman whose spirit had truly companioned and supported him.
The woman looked gentle and sensible. John went to her, saying, "1' m Captain John Blanchard. You must be Miss Maynell. I am glad to meet you here. May I take you to dinner?"
She replied with a smile, I don' t know what this is about. But the lady in green who just went by, begged me to wear this rose on my coat.
