Every year, we celebrate many special days─Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and New Year’s Day. In some countries, there is a special day for playing tricks on others. In North America and parts of Europe, this day is known as April Fool’s Day, and is celebrated on April 1.
Many people believe that the French started April Fool’s Day. Centuries ago, New Year’s Day in Europe was April 1. In 1582, the calendar changed and King Charles IX of France moved it to January 1.
Some people did not like this, and chose to keep April 1 as New Year’s Day. Many called these people ‘April fools’ and played jokes and tricks on them. Over time, April 1 became a day to have fun in France. It then spread to England and Scotland, and later, to North America.
On April Fool’s Day, jokes are common. In the United States, for example, a person may move a friend’s clock ahead one hour, or change the sugar and salt. In Scotland, April Fool’s Day lasts for two days. The second day is called ‘Taily Day’─for one’s ‘tail’. On this day, people might secretly put a sign saying ‘kick me’ on a person’s back or behind. Other countries have their own ‘Fool’s Day’. In Spain and Mexico, people play tricks on each other on December 28. In India, it happens on March 31.

It crossed the Pacific Ocean and went around South America, ending up yesterday in Rhode Island, the smallest state in America. In the end, the trip covered over 46,000 kilometres. Emma said that actually it was very difficult to be all by herself for such a long time even though she’s really into sailing. Her worst moment was when she had to climb the high mast (船桅) in a bad storm to fix some broken parts. She sailed hundreds of kilometres away from land and the wind was blowing very hard. Children are amazing! They pick up language so naturally and easily. Have you ever wondered why? It’s because of the way they learn.
Children learn by simply doing what comes naturally—they listen, copy, and communicate. Let’s take a closer look at how children learn language. Perhaps we can discover a better, more “natural” way to learn English.
Listen as often as possible
When people talk to children, they often use simple words that children can understand. That’s really important to the children’s language development. In order to learn, children must be able to understand what they hear. If they don’t understand it, it’s just meaningless noise.
Listen to radio or TV programs that use English at your level. If you can’t understand every word or sentence, don’t give up. Just pay attention to what you can understand. And listen as often as you can.
Be a Copycat
Children like to copy their parents, their friends and even the TV. (the, teaches, this, how, pronounce, them, language, to). As you listen to English, repeat what you hear as much as you can.
Use English to communicate
Children don’t practice grammar rules. They use language to talk about things that interest them. This helps them learn to express themselves. They don’t worry about their small vocabulary or poor grammar. They find ways to say what they want and they do it successfully.
So look for chances to talk with people in English. If you can’t find a foreigner to talk to, talk with other English students instead. Start an English discussion group and chat about music, movies and so on. Don’t worry about making mistakes. You can learn English better by correcting mistakes.
Children learn English by __________ copying and communicating.
