As prices and building costs keep rising(上涨的), the do-it-yourself (DIY) trend (趋势) in the U.S. continues to grow.
“We needed furniture for our living room,” says John Ross, “And we just didn't have enough money to buy it. So we decide to try making a few tables and chairs.” John got married six months ago, and like many young people these days, they are struggling to make a home at a time when the cost of living is very high. The Rosses took a 2-week course for $280 at a night school. Now they build all their furniture and make repairs around the house.
Jim Hatfield has three boys and his wife died. He has a full-time job at home as well as in a shoe making factory. Last month, he received a car repair bill for $420. “I was deeply upset about it. Now I've finished a car repair course, I should be able to fix the car by myself.”
John and Jim are not unusual people. Most families in the country are doing everything they can to save money so that they can fight with the high cost of living. If you want to become a “do-it -yourselfer”, you can go to DIY classes. And for those who don't have time to take a course, there are books that tell you how you can do things yourself.

When I was a little child ,my parents took me to German..When I came back, I could speak German fluently. “ Can I do something useful with German?” I asked myself.
Then, I got a good opportunity last spring. During that time our university had a long holiday, so I stayed at home with nothing to do. . “ Why don’t you translate(翻译) it into Chinese? It will be better than playing computer games all day.” I agreed happily.
I promised to do 4,000 words each day. But soon I found it was hard to keep the promise.
One day in May, the weather was beautiful..Those 4,000 words were still waiting for me. After translating only three pages, I already lost interest in the book. I looked at it for a long time. But I couldn’t make myself turn the pages.
I counted (数)the words again and again. I just wanted to give up. I felt as if two people were fighting in my mind. One said, “Don’t give up! Keep working hard ,and you will do well!” But then the other one said, “Go and play! It will be more interesting than translating. Do your homework tomorrow.”
I stood up and would turn off the computer. But then I remembered what my parents had told me, “ Whatever(无论什么) you do, don’t stop half way.”.

A.My father brought me a German book
B.So I sat down and went on with it
C.But I couldn’t go out
D.I lived there for nine years

E. How I wished I could just go outside and play basketball with my friends!
