Each year, thousands of Chinese middle school students go to study in foreign countries such as the US, the UK, Australia and Japan.
“Chinese children hope very much to go to get a wider view (视野) of the world.” said Chen Yi, a Chinese writer who has lived in America for 16 years. In a talk Chen told more than 300 parents and their children that life in foreign countries can be for young people. “They have to meet a culture shock and language problems.”
However, these are not the most difficult things. To most children looking after themselves when studying alone in a foreign country is a big .
Zhang Jia, a 16-year-old student, began to study in a high school in Sydney, Australia last October. To his surprise, his teachers there pushed students to study. And there wasn't homework. “With these education systems (体制), we have more time and more space for thinking.” said Zhang. “But if you don't know how to your time and money, you will not have an easy time.” Some of his friends spent their whole year's money in the first two months of the term, and they didn't pass their exams.
“Studying abroad at a young age can help students learn a foreign language and open up their eyes, but students and parents should know about the challenges,” Chen said. “ you want to study abroad, try to talk to someone with in foreign countries. Make sure that you are ready for it.

It is true that people with better education are usually able to get better paying jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don’t. It seems that the purpose of education is to make people get jobs. But this isn’t accepted by all people.
Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. In fact, if education is just a way of making a living, people don’t need to spend so much time in school. People can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. Even language and maths need not be taught in detail, either. Here it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.
Education is well-rounded and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements of human. Educationis to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays and take an interest in the world.
I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the main reason.

Several weeks ago, our headmaster, Mr. Gaudi, told us that our school had been chosen to compete on Smart Aleck—a game show which my best friend Carla and I love. Carla has a good imagination, and I know a lot of history, so we thought we’d be good for the team.
A few days later, Mr. Gaudi held a meeting with everyone interested in the . He told us that Smart Aleck uses a five-member team. After a few hours, all the on the team were chosen except one. Carla and I tied(打成平手) for that last position. We had to hold a one-on-one competition the two of us. The winner would be on the team and the loser would be the backup.
Midway through our two-person competition, I was starting to pull ahead(领先). I saw the look on Carla's face. I waited for a second and knew what I had to do. As much as I wanted to be on Smart Aleck, Carla wanted even more. So, starting with my next question, I held back and let Carla , just by a little bit. She felt sorry for my not being on the team as she she would be on the show. And since I will go as backup, I’ll still have the fun of the show up close.
Was I cheating(欺骗) by not trying as hard as I could? I don’t think so. No one noticed, and Carla and I didn’t it. It won’t hurt the team Carla will be a very good competitor on the real show. I think that making my best friend happy was the right thing to do.
