A month after Hurricane Katrina,I returned home in New Orleans. There lay my house, reduced to waist-high rains, smelly and dirty. Before the trip,I’d had my car fixed. When the office employee of the garage was writing up the bill.she noticed my Louisiana license plate.“You from New Orleans? ”she asked.I said l was,
“No charge.”She said, and firmly shook her head when I reached for my wallet. The next day I went for a haircut, and the same thing happened.
As my wife was studying in Florid,we decided to move there and tried to find a rental house that we could afford while also paying off a mortgage(抵押贷款)on our ruined house. We looked at many places, but none was satisfactory. We’d begun to accept that we’d have to live in extremely reduced circumstances for a while, when I got a very curious e-mail from a James Kennedy in California. He’d read some pieces I’d written about our sufferings for State,an online magazine and wanted to give us (“no conditions attached”)a new house across the lake from New Orleans. It sounded too good to be true, but I replied, thanking him for his exceptional generosity, that we had no plans to go back. Then a poet of the University of Florida offered to let his house to me while he went to England on his one-year-paid leave. The rent was rather reasonable.Imentioned the poet’s offer to James Kennedy, and the next day he sent a check covering our entire rent for eight months.
Throughout this painful experience, the kindness of strangers backs my faith in humanity. It’s almost worth losing you worldly possessions to be reminded that people really want to be kind when given a channel.

If you go into the forest with friends, stay with them. If you don’t, you may get lost. If you get lost, this is what you should do. Sit down and stay where you are. Don’t try to find your friends—let them find you. You can help them find you by staying in one place. There is another way to help your friends or other people to find you. You can shout or whistle three times. Stop. Then shout or whistle three times again. Any signal given three times is a call for help.
Keep up shouting or whistling. Always three times together. When people hear you, they will know that you are not just making a noise for fun. They will let you know that they have heard your signal. They will give you two shouts or two whistles. When a signal is given twice, it is an answer to a call for help.
If you don’t think that you will get help before night comes, try to make a little house with branches. Make yourself a bed with leaves and grass.
When you need some water, you have to leave your little branch house to look for it. Don’t just walk away. Pick off small branches and drop them as you walk in order to go back again easily. When you are lost, the most important thing to do is to stay in one place.

An important question about eating outside is who pays for the meal. If a friend of yours asks you to have lunch with him, you may say something like this, “I’m afraid of it,I’ll have to be some place cheap, because I have very little money .”The other person may say, “ OK, I’ll meet you at McDonald’s.” This means that these two persons agree to “go Dutch”, that is, each person pays for himself. He may also say, “Oh, no. I want to take you to lunch at Smith’s,” or “I want you to try the Chinese dumplings there. They’re great.” This means the person wants to pay for both of you. If you feel friendly towards this person, you can go with him and you needn’t pay for the meal. You may just say, “Thank you.” That would be very nice.
American customs(风俗) about who pays for dates(约会) are much the same as in other parts of the world. In the old days, American women wanted men to pay for all the meals. But, today, a university girl or a woman in business world will usually pay her way during the day. If a man asks her for a dance outside the working hours, it means “Come, as my guest(客人).” So as you can see, it is a polite thing to make the question clear at the very beginning

People often talk as if shyness is a disease or mental condition that call be cured.I prefer to think of it as an emotional disability. It’s something we are born with and something we carry with us in our entire lives. There are too many people, however, who seem to be determined to find some way of doing away with their shyness. In my opinion.it’s a waste of time.I don’t mean hat we should do nothing about it;quite the contrary, I think we need to separate the basic fact of shyness from our ability to take part in a social environment.
Look at one of the most famous shy people of them all, Johnny Carson. This man is painfullyshy, yet for decades he made a living talking and associating(交往)with different people every night,in front of a national audience.Carson has never done away with his shyness, but he hassuccessfully found a way to deal with it to the extent that he could be,not just a talk show host, but a legend(传奇)among talk show hosts.Look also at Sally Fields, who has recently admitted her problem with shyness. This is a woman who has appeared in many films.TV shows and interviews, yet in her early years she was so shy that she turned down a lunch invitation from JANE Fonda because she was terribly afraid of meeting her.
I guess that our shyness is there because each of us is born with some insecurity(不安全感) and this insecurity prevents us from reaching out to others the way people with a more open personality do.As we grow up and become adults,we allow our social skills to grow and develop. But we are still stuck in kindergarten or elementary school or wherever it was when our shyness took root in our soul.

A.He dared to speak in front of a national audience.
B.He did away with his shyness carefully.
C.He was described as a hero in some legend books.
D.He failed to become a good talk show host.
74.The passage tells us that Sally Fields was__________.
