lt's a dog's life for the nation's mutts - who are becoming anxious and aggressive through lack of play, experts fear.
A study of 4,000 dog owners has found a clear link between limited playtime and behaviour problems, such as being nervous when left alone, disobedience and snapping at other animals. And while researchers can't be sure that playing less is directly to blame, they say that games provide vital intellectual stimulation and exercise. The Bristol University study showed that only one in five owners play with their dogs six times a day.  Half play two or three times a day and 10 per cent have just one play session.
Mark Evans, former chief vet for the RSPCA, said that dogs are one of the few animals to play into adulthood.  He told the Sunday Times: 'There is a clear association in the results.  Owners report more potential behaviour problems in dogs that play less.'
Emily Blackwell -- who conducted the research uncovered tonight on Channel 4's Dogs: Their Secret Lives - said dogs often enjoy playing so much that they slow down or change strategy to make the fun last longer. The lecturer in canine(犬科动物) welfare hopes that 10,000 people will eventually fill out the survey. This will enable her to firmly establish whether lack of play is affecting dogs' moods - or if their emotional problems put their owners off spending time with them.  For instance, they may slow down when playing 'chase', allowing their owner to catch up with them and the game to continue. Favourite games include wrestling, chase and tugging at toys, and perhaps unsurprisingly,'fetch' topped the list. Tennis balls were the favourite toys, followed by soft, squeaky toys, rubber balls and rope toys.
The research comes just days after an animal charity warned that millions of dogs are becoming fat. aggressive and destructive because their owners are clueless about basic animal care. The PDSA said that treats including beer, chips and leftover takeaways are making dogs fat and unwell – and wamed that almost a million are never taken for a walk.
If the dogs are not looked after carefully,

A.they may become rebelling and damaging
B.they may get hurt and run away from home
C.they may become less active and dislike playing with the owners
D.they are more likely to fight with other animals

What is Emily Blackwell's opinion on dogs' behavior?

A.If the owners spend less time with their dogs, they may become aggressive.
B.Dogs know how to make their playing time last longer.
C.Only a few owners spend enough time playing with their dogs.
D.Some junk food or leftover may cause obesity on dogs.

The underlined word "this" in the fourth paragraph probably refers to

A.canine welfare
B.Channel 4's Dogs:Their Secret Lives
C.the survey
D.favourite games

What can we learn from the passage?

A.Researchers confirm that playing less is to blame for dogs' bad behaviours.
B.Most of the owners will play with their dogs many times in a day.
C.Chase and tennis balls are the favourites of dogs.
D.It's obvious that dogs' behaviour problems are related with their playing time.

Members of Parliament (MPs) warned that the privacy(隐藏)of thousands of mobile phone users is in danger today because of Google's new tracking system. In a motion(提案),they also warned that the system offers live tracking of mobiles through a website and called on Google to examine the service.
The Latitude system can find where a user is . This is then broadcasted live to Google's website. Once the service is activated , the position of a person's phone appears as a blue dot on a map on the screen of whoever is allowed to monitor(监控)them . The Latitude feature is being developed by Google as a "fun" way to "keep tabs on someone special", More than a million users around the world have already signed up to the service, Google claims .
However, concerns have been raised about the system. MPs have written to Google demanding extra security(安全) safeguards on the service。
Mr. Brake , one of the MPs who raised the motion, said , "In Britain, we have a tradition of fighting for our freedom. With this new system we face a threat to it . I demand MPs to support this motion and encourage the Government to take action to ensure that Latitude does not represent a threat to our privacy. or our freedom could be in danger."
Google today insisted there was no threat to privacy .It said it was up to users to decide whether to make their location visible to other people and to decide who could monitor their position .The service was designed to help people keep in touch .
However , human rights watchdog Privacy International analyzed the service and claimed it was open to abuse(滥用). Its report claimed employers could supply employees with phones already set up to use the service without their knowledge, or that users could simply sign up their partner's or child's mobile phone without telling them .

Dave needed to prepare for Saturday's fishing trip. He went into his hall closet, where he had more than 20 rods and reels. Nowadays he went fishing twice a year at Big Bear, a huge lake in southern California about 7,000 feet up in the mountains.
California tries to improve the fishing industry by sponsoring(发起)a Free Fishing Day twice a ear, once in June and once in September. That’s enough for Dave. He went mostly because it was a cocial event with a few friends, not so much to catch fish. Even driving up a twisty(弯弯曲曲的)two-lane road was worth the trip. Let alone the big, beautiful houses and trees that lined the shore of the lake.
Preparing was a project in itself. Dace had even created a computer file named Fishing Trip. It was a checklist of 45 things to take to Big Bear. He took two rods, because on Free Fishing Day you were allowed to fish with two rods instead of the usual one rod. He took a sweatshirt, jeans, two pairs of socks, a heavy hooded jacket, winter gloves, and a scarf. He also took flip-flops, shorts, a T-shirt, sunglasses, a big hat, and lightweight raincoat. If you go to Big Bear in June, you’d better be prepared for hot or cold, rain or shine.
He prepared a couple of magazines to read just in case the fish weren’t biting. He and his friends joked that the fish were always biting- in the spot you just left or the spot you were headed for.
After about an hour and a half; Dave had gathered all the items on his list into a neat pile next to his door. He went to bed knowing that tomorrow’s weather and fishing were unpredictable, but the good time with his friends was a given.
45.Dave went go Big Bear twice a year mainly to_________.
A.fish B.meet his friends
C.prepare for his fishing D.develop a project
46.Why had Dave created a computer file named Fishing Trip?
A.Because he was afraid he would forget the things needed
B.Because he would have so much fish to catch.
C.Because the good time with his friends was uncertain.
D.Because he wanted to buy some magazines on fishing.
47.On Free Fishing Day, people going fishing could use_________.
A.one fishing rod B.two fishing rods C.three fishing rods D.twenty fishing rods
48.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Saturday’s Fishing Trip B.A Happy Fishing Day
C.An Unforgettable Fishing Day D.Preparing For a Fishing Trip

“Good evening, everybody!” said the teacher, Donna. “Where is everybody?” That was sort of a daily joke by Donna. Usually the class started with only two or three students present, and then filled up as the minutes went by. It was summertime. Summer school was only eight weeks long. Class attendance was always smaller than during fall and spring semesters.
“I don’t know, teacher. Maybe they late or no come,” said one student. “Maybe watching TV football tonight.”
“Is there a soccer game tonight? It seems like there’s a soccer game every night. Oh, well. Let’s get started, okay? We’re on page 36 in the workbook. Tonight we’re studying participles as adjectives. Students are always confused when they learn about the present and past participles, so we will practice this a lot. Tonight, we’re just going to practice the present participle.
“The present participle tells us what emotion or feeling the subject is causing. For example, ‘Grammar is boring’ means that the subject—grammar—causes an emotion of boredom. If we say, ‘The movie is interesting,’ we are saying that the movie causes a feeling of interest. If we say, ‘The roller coaster is exciting,’ we are saying that the roller coaster causes a feeling of excitement. Any questions so far? Am I confusing you? Is everyone confused?”
The classroom was quiet. Donna looked at blank faces. They were confused. She knew this would take a while. But eventually, the faster students would grasp it, and then they would help the slower students. By the end of the evening, most of the class would feel comfortable using the present participle.
Donna erased the board and put some new examples on it. She loved guiding her students through difficult topics like this one. She always felt a little bit thrilled when the look of understanding came to their faces.

44.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.Donna was experienced in teaching English grammar.
B.Donna made the students practice using the present participle.
C.Donna didn’t use any examples to help the students.

It is difficult in the modern world to do anything other than a basic job without being able to read. Reading as a skill is the key to an educated workforce, which in turn is the bedrock of economic advancement, particularly in the present technological age. Studies have shown that by increasing the literacy skill of primary school children in the UK, the benefit to economy generally is in billions of pounds. The skill of reading is now no mere just an intellectual (知识的) or leisure activity, but rather a completely developed economic force.
Part of the problem with reading is that it is a skill which is not appreciated in most developed societies. This is an attitude that has forced a large number of the population in most Western nations to illiteracy (文盲). It might surprise people in countries outside the West to learn that in the United Kingdom, and indeed in some other European countries, the literacy rate has fallen to below that of so-called less developed countries.
There are also forces against reading in our modern society. It is not seen as cool among a younger generation more at home with computer screens or e-libraries.
And reading is not very appealing. Students at school, college or university, who read a lot are called bookworms. The term indicates the contempt (轻蔑) in which reading and learning are held in certain circles or subcultures. It is a criticism, like all such attacks, driven by the insecurity of those who are not literate or are semiliterate. Criticism is also a means, like all bullying, of keeping peers(同辈) in place so that they do not step out of line. Peer pressure among young people is so powerful that it often kills any attempts to change attitudes towards habits like reading.
But the negative senses apart, is modern Western society standing Canute-like (自以为是地) against an uncontrollable drop? I think not.
57.What is the main idea of Paragraph 1?
A.Reading plays an important role in education.
B.People can't find a job without being able to read.
C.The skill of reading has become an economic power.
D.More intellectual activities are needed in the technological age.
58.What problem exists in most Western nations?
A. Younger generations are addicted to modern technology.
B.The literacy skills have weakened their financial benefit.
C.Literacy rate has decreased because of people' s attitude.
D.School children spend more money on leisure activities.
59.What does the underlined sentence probably mean?
A.Criticism may help the young make reading a habit.
B.The contempt makes peers refuse to change their reading habit.
C.Peer pressure stops bully boy from stepping out of line.
D.Criticism strongly influences the young' s behavior towards reading.
60.What is the author' s purpose in writing this passage?
A.To explain his own attitudes.
B.To describe the decrease in reading.
C.To draw people' s attention to reading.
D.To criticize negative attitudes towards reading
