On a hot summer day in South Florida, a little boy decided to go for a swim in the old swimming hole behind his house. In a hurry to dive into the cool water, he ran out of the back door, leaving behind shoes and shirt as he went.
He flew into the water, not realizing that as he swam toward the middle of the lake, a crocodile was swimming toward him. His mother in the house was looking out of the window and saw the two. In great fear, she ran toward the water, shouting to her son as loudly as she could. Hearing her voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a U-turn to swim to his mother. It was too late. Just as he reached her, the crocodile reached him. From the shore, the mother caught her little boy by the arms just as the crocodile snatched his legs. That began an incredible(难以置信的) tug-of-war between the two. The crocodile was much stronger that the mother, but the mother was much too eager(急切的) to let go. A farmer happened to drive by, heard their screams, raced from his truck, took aim and shot the crocodile.
After several weeks in hospital, the little boy survived(幸存). His legs were very scarred by the attack(袭击) of the animal. And, on his arms, were deep scratches(抓痕)where his mother's fingernails dug into his flesh in her effort to hang on to the son she loved.
A newspaper reporter, who interviewed the boy, asked if he would show him his scars (伤疤). The boy lifted his legs. And then, with obvious pride, he said to the reporter," But look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my Mom wouldn't let go."

Last month when I was taking part in a US college interview , I was asked , “ what makes you special ? ” In fact I had answered questions likes this many times since I decided to go to college in the US. The US colleges paid special attention to different achievements. For example, a person who is very good at math can go to a famous college but also can be a good football player.
This experience made me think again that I must try to find where my own interests might lead me . To be honest, it was not easy. However, I never felt sorry to choose this way because it helped me understand myself . If I took the College Entrance Examination, as we call it gaokao in China, it could never possibly do .
When I entered high school, I took gaokao seriously because it seemed to me a great way to show how good at my lessons. However ,as I grew older , I realized gaokao did make me work hard at my lessons , but the pressure also pushed many other activities out of my life , like guitar―playing . Although I had no time for it , I will still get to it in the future .
No doubt, gaokao provides a way of choosing those who are successful in their studies . But it is really important for all of us to rethink what “ talent ” really is today . This is because we now live in a world in which all of our other human qualities are needed for success, not just the high grade .
Ken Robinson once said, “ the society depends on different kinds of talents . ” However, gaokao pays too attention to a person' s grades but little to his other qualities. And it is these qualities that makes life colorful and fun.
As high school students, we can not change the present situation of eduction , but we are always free to think outside of the box . Although good school grade is still useful, I hope one day we will see our education also welcomes the amazing possibilities in different people .The US colleges pay special attention to ________.
A.students ' family background . |
B.the different achievements |
C.students ' ideas about way of life . |
D.the school a student is from . |
When at high school, the writer ________.
A.had a lot of activities . |
B.did not work hard at her lessons . |
C.did well in gaokao |
D.had no time to play the guitar . |

During the 1800s, African Americans worked long days in the fields of the American South. They sang songs that they had brought from Africa while working. One person sang a line. Then a group of workers repeated it. The songs' words told of the hardships (艰苦) that people suffered. They clapped their hands and stomped (跺) their feet to the music.
In the 1860s, the music changed greatly. African American music took new forms. It was also influenced by dance music, which had great rhythm. Banjos (班卓琴) became popular. A blues singer usually sang a line and then played the banjo in reply. By the early 1900s, the guitar had taken the place of the banjo in the blues music.
The blues music has many obvious characteristics. One of them is that the musical notes are often "bent". That is, they are changed slightly to give a song more strength.
Lyrics are the words of a song. Blues lyrics describe everyday life. The lyrics are often about the relationships between men and women. They tell about sadness and overwork. They tell about finding and losing love, having money or being poor, being happy or sad and lonely. They almost always use the rhythms of everyday speech. A group of blues lyrics usually has three lines. The second line repeats the first line. The third line has different words.
By the 1940s, a large number of African Americans moved to Chicago. There, a new kind of "Chicago" blues began. The new music was excellent dance music. Chicago blues led to the birth of a new music style-rock and roll. This passage is mainly about ___________.
