Long long ago, a donkey(驴) fell into a well(井). The animal cried for hours as the farmer tried to think out what to do. Finally, the farmer thought the animal was too old and the well needed to be covered up anyway, so he decided not to save the donkey.
The farmer invited his neighbours to help him. They began to shovel(铲) dirt into the well. The donkey cried harder. But a few minutes later, he became quiet. The farmer looked into the well, and was surprised by what he saw.
While every shovelful of dirt hit his back, the donkey would shake it off and take a step on the new layer of dirt. As the farmer’s neighbours continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, the donkey would shake it off and take another step up. Soon the donkey stepped up out of the well and ran away, to the surprise of all the neighbours.
The lesson we get from this story is that if life shovels some dirt on us, we must get out the well and not let it cover us. We must learn to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a stepping-stone(踏脚石). We can get out of the deepest well by never giving up!
The farmer is ________.

A.careless
B.kind to the donkey
C.ready to give up the donkey
D.friendly

When we are in trouble, we have to learn from _______ in the story.

A.the farmer B.the neighbours C.the donkey D.all of them

the story tells us ________.

A.never to give up even if we’re in great trouble
B.the donkey is a clever animal
C.the man has to be kind to the animal

Inventions

Phone

The first telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876.It made communications easier. But the telephones were only fixed in post offices.People had to go there to make calls to faraway people and the fees were very high.Later,a cellphone was developed in 1973in America. It was one of the most useful inventions.People can use cellphones to communicate with others much more easily. They can take them anywhere to make private calls, even vision calls (可视电话).Cellphones have many other functions, such as sending messages, taking photos and reading online.

TV

The first TV set was invented by an English scientist,John Baird,in 1926.The invention helped people watch films at home instead of going to the cinema as before. At first,TV sets only broadcast black﹣white pictures.Several years later, colored TV sets made the pictures lively. However, they were heavy and thick,so it was difficult to move them. Then, digital TV sets came into being. They are light and thin. Many TV programs are available (可获得的) at any time.At present, people can use the IPTV( 网络电视) to record and replay programs.

Computer

The first modern computer was invented in America in 1946.It was as big as a room.It improved the speed and exactitude of calculation (计算).In the 1950s,desktop computers were invented in the same country. They became smaller and could be put on the desk.Since then, they have become very important in many fields of work and leisure. Before the 1970s,the computers were single. It was the Internet that joined the computers into a big family,so they could share information with one another.Around 1985,laptops were developed in Japan. They were much smaller and could be put on people's laps. They were light and easy to take.

Nanotechnology is a new type of science that will be widely used in many fields.Do you want to know more about it?

Imagine:a television screen has the size and thickness of a piece of paper. You carry it around in your pocket and take it out when you want to watch a show.(61)A guitar is so tiny that you can't see it with the human eyes, but you can hear sound when its strings are pulled.

(63)也许纳米技术对医学将有最大的影响.Imagine nanobots in medicine.Thousands or even millions of tiny machines can be sent into the human body with specific tasks. For example,64they can be designed to find and destroy cancer cells or viruses(病毒).Other machines may stay in the human body forever to help organs(器官)that are not working properly.

When could all of these happen?Scientists predict that most of these are possible in the next 30years.Thousands of scientists around the world are working on these micro﹣machines.Nanotechnology is just around the corner.

A famous study was done in a school by a professor from a university. At the start of the school year, the teachers were given the names of five children. They were told that these five were the most excellent students in the class. But the fact was that these students were only average, and they were not the best students at all.Well, guess what?At the end of the year, all the five average students scored among the highest in the class.

What made these average students change so much to become top students? The only difference was the change in their teachers'attitude.Because the teachers believed that these five kids were top students, they expected more from them. And so these five average students became to believe and expect more from themselves. So they worked harder to do as well as they could.

Do you know?If you expect the best from people, they'll usually want to give you their best.A great leader said,"Treat a person just how he appears to be on the outside, and you'll make him even worse. But treat a person like he's already a success, and you'll help make him the best he can be."

Like the true story of 7﹣year﹣old Johnny, his teacher got so angry with him that one day she said,"Johnny, you're the naughtiest(最调皮的) boy in this class.I'm sure you'll never change."The next year Johnny had a new teacher. And on the first day of class, she met with Johnny after school and said,"Johnny,I've heard a lot about you!But do you know that I don't believe a word of it."And every day after that, this new teacher treated Johnny as if he was one of the smartest students even when Johnny did naughty things.Later on,Johnny became a school leader, because that's the power of our belief and attitude towards children.

51.The professor started his research by

A.telling the five students to work harder than ever before

B.teaching the five children himself

C.telling the teachers that the five students were the best in the class

D.asking the five children to find a new teacher

52.The five average students became top students mainly because of

A.the professor's study

B.the change in the professor's attitude

C.the teachers'hard work

D.the change in the teachers'attitude

53.Why did the writer tell us the story of 7﹣year﹣old Johnny?

A.To show the importance of encouragement

B.To show that the boy was clever enough

C.To let us know the famous boy

D.To let us know how good his new teacher was

54.According to the story,we can learn that

A.the research began at the end of the school year

B.the students scored highest only because they worked hard

C.if you expect the most from people, you'll get the least

D.little Johnny liked his new teacher very much

55.What does the passage mainly tell us?

A.If you want to get more, you should have new teachers
