The girl read my signature, frowned (皱眉), looked at me carefully and asked, "Aren't you Robert Charboss?"
"No," I told her proudly, "I'm the author of Alice Adams, the (8)w inner of two Pulitzer Prizes."
The young girl turned to the (9)o ther shrugged (耸肩) and said, "Mary, lend your rubber to me." At that moment, all my (10)p ride turned into a bubble (泡泡) immediately. Since then, I always warn myself: no matter how outstanding you are, don't think highly of yourself.

Many people have an interest in magic, but(3) (many) of them are not performing and getting paid for it by age 12. Nor are they teaching college classes in magic at age 16. Copperfield was the(4) (young) person ever to be allowed to join the society of American Magicians. When he got to college himself , Copperfield got the leading part in a play called Magic Man. Patients in the program can speak(8) (proud) that they can do tricks that healthy people can't do.
Like many magicians, Copperfield is interested (9) the history of magic. He has created a museum and library in which books, articles and old medical equipment (10) kept and shown. By keeping track of history, Copperfield hopes to save magic for the future.
Thousands of years ago, people had to hunt for food. They lived in caves and needed fire to keep warm.(1) .
We don't know why they drew the pictures. They had to go deep into the cave to do it , so they must have had a plan. They probably took a fire made of fat with them.(2) . Others think the spears(长矛) in the pictures mean they were teaching other people to hunt.
For paint, they mixed animal fat with some different things such as dirt or berries(浆果).(3) Some of the drawings are colorful and others are black from the burned end of a stick.
These people drew what they saw around them﹣animals such as buffalo, deer, horse, and sometimes birds and fish(4) .
The pictures are quite good. The buffalo look strong and powerful. Many of the horses and deer look beautiful.
These drawings have been found in more than 130 caves ﹣﹣﹣﹣mostly in England and France(5) . It is interesting to look at such old drawings.
A. They drew people , but no very often. B. Maybe there are more that we haven't found yet. C. Some of them drew pictures on the walls of their caves. D. They used sticks to brush the paint onto walls on the cave. E. Maybe they drew the pictures to bring good luck when they hunted. |
Dear Li Ming,
I am happy to hear that you would like to become an architect(建筑师)!Your aunt tells me that you are a good student a hard worker, so I(1) know that you'll be able to realize whatever you put your mind to.
You have (2) a difficult but great job. Architect is unusual because it is a mixture of both art and science. You need to be(3) to think of new and interesting designs(设计). You also need to be good at math and science so that you can translate your creative ideas into buildings that are safe and(4) . Even language is important to an architect. You need to be able express your ideas (5) so that other people can understand them.
Think about all the different kinds of (6) people need: houses, apartment, schools, office buildings, grocery stores, churches, malls , hotels, factories, gyms, airports, hospitals. Architects think up the(7) way to build each building so that it is interesting to look at, safe, and easy to use.
First , the architect usually creates a proposal(提案) that shows the customer his or her idea for the building.(8) the customer likes it , then the architect keeps working. He or she (9) a plan that shows all the details of how the building will be constructed(建造). The architect does not actually build the structure. But questions often come up during the construction,(10) the architect always needs to be easily.
(11) the idea in my mind becomes a real building is my favorite. That is always (12) for me.
Please let me know if you have any other questions. You are also welcome to visit me anytime.
