Confucius(孔子) is the greatest teacher in Chinese history. He was born on September 28, 551BC(公元前) in the Kingdom of Lu, in today’s Shandong Province. When he was young, he and his mother had a hard life. At the age of fifteen, he began to learn music, and he did well in it. Then he went on learning other subjects. Can you remember the day when you spoke your first words? If you can, you are unusual. Try to think what the first months of your life were like. I’m sure you just spent most of your time eating, sleeping and crying. As you grew older, your parents spent more time playing with you and talking to you. You watched and listened. You began to know that people make some sounds to go with some things.
Then you began to cry to make sounds you heard. And step by step (逐渐地) you were able to make the right sound for one thing.
On that day you came to understand the secret of the language. The secret is that a certain sound means a certain thing. Only when a group of people use the same set of sounds of things can they understand each other, so these people have a language.
After you found the secret of language, you learnt words. Some of the words mean things, like books, chairs and shops. Some of the words mean actions, for example, go and swim. Soon you learnt to put words together to share your idea, like “I want to go out and play with my friends.”

Vanilla is my best friend. She is a lovely girl with two big, beautiful eyes. But she always hides them behind a pair of glasses.
One day, though, I nearly ended our friendship. I remember that day clearly. We were sitting in the classroom. The teacher was giving us our results of a Chinese test. I had done badly. I felt so sad that I wouldn’t talk to anyone. At lunchtime, I even stayed in the classroom alone. Suddenly, I heard a voice. It was Vanilla. “You look very unhappy,” she said. “What’s wrong?” I looked up at her, but said nothing. I knew Vanilla had got a good mark in the test. I thought she was making fun of me. I kept in silent, but Vanilla didn’t go away. She kept asking me questions, “Is it because of the exam? Do you want me to show you the right answers?” I looked away from her. When I looked up again, Vanilla had gone. And so had my exam paper! I looked everywhere for my paper, but couldn’t find it.
In the afternoon, Vanilla came up to my desk and gave me my exam paper back. I looked at it and got a big surprise. Vanilla had written the right answers next to every one of my mistakes. My face went red. Vanilla had been trying to help me all along. How nice she was! I wanted to hug (拥抱) her, but all I did was to hold her hands and say, “Thank you.” That afternoon, Vanilla and I went home on foot together. I felt so happy that we were still best friends.
