Bi Yansong, a famous TV host, expressed his support for students wearing green scarves (绿领巾) at a primary school in Xi’an. He wore a green tie on a TV program on October 19, 2011.
“I just want the students to know that I’m also wearing green. And we are all great people and are as good as those wearing red scarves.”
The First Experimental Primary School in Xi’an made children with poor schoolwork and behaviors wear green scarves. Parents whose children wore green scarves were angry. “The punishment is too bad. All the children need their self-esteem(自尊心) even though they are very young, and they know the green scarf means something is not quite right. It does harm to students’ self-esteem,” said one mother. Educational expert Li Zhenxi said that primary and junior high school students have strong self-esteem. they hope to be respected(尊重) and understood. Punishment will hurt them. “It’s better to encourage them rather than call them ‘bad’ students,” he said. Now, the school has stopped the practice.
Some schools think more of students’ self-esteem and have done better in protecting students’ privacy (隐私) and encouraging them. In American schools, teachers post test results on the wall. Instead of using students’ names, they use secret numbers. This way, students know their secret numbers and can check their own grades only. Many teachers in China tell students their grades by sending text messages to their students.
School and teachers are doing more for students’ self-teem. But it is a long way. Both teachers and parents should realize that tests scores are not the only measure(标准) of a student’s ability. Everyone has his own strengths and everyone can make great progress by working hard. Adults should make students get to know their own value. The most important is to make students believe in themselves.

World Book Day falls on April 23 every year. It was set up by the UNESCO in 1955 to encourage people, especially teenagers, to discover the pleasure of reading. It is also the day to honor great writers, for example, William Shakespeare, born or dead on that day.
Many countries celebrate World Book Day. Take UK as an example. On that day, millions of schoolchildren can buy books of special price, a much lower price than usual, in any bookstore. It has been done every year since 1998, World Book Day is also celebrated in China. Wen Jiabao, Premier of China, is an avid reader. He does lots of reading every day though he is very busy. On World Book Day 2009, he called on people to do more reading. Wen suggested that young people should spend more time reading. “Books can not change the world, but people can change the world by changing themselves through reading,” he said.
Why do people like reading? One big advantage(优点) is that reading helps us become more knowledgeable and more intelligent. Also reading helps us to follow the latest developments of science and technology. Besides, reading gives us information about other cultures and places of the world. When we read, we may find many things that are unfamiliar to us. We would have to use our brain to think about them or do more reading to find out the answers. The more we read, the more we know. What’s more, reading is also one of the most important ways to learn a foreign language like English.
“Reading makes a full man”. Books, magazines, newspapers and other kinds of reading materials can help us to know more about the outside world and perfect us. Therefore, it is necessary for us to spend time reading every day. When is World Book Day? _________________

You’ve probably seen it before-two elderly people walking hand in hand down the street and looking very much like each other. They look so much alike that they could be brother and sister.
Do you believe that people who live together for many years would look alike? It’s strange. but scientists say it’s true.
How scientists proved it? In a study, scientists found young couples only showed similarity by chance. However, elder couples were very likely to look like each other. The similarity could be very subtle(微妙) and could be found in wrinkles(皱纹) or furrows, etc. Besides, some couples look far more alike than other couples.
The scientists thought of several possible reasons:
1. Diet. “We are what we eat.” As couples usually share the same diet, will they probably look alike? For example, if both partners eat a high fat diet, their faces will tend to look fat. However, the scientists ruled this out(排除) using another small study.
2. Environment. Will elderly couples show similarity because they live together in the same area for a long time? The environmental factors(因素) such as sunshine and wind affect the skin in similar ways. The scientists ruled this possibility out as well.
3. Empathy(移情作用). This is the theory(理论) the scientists believe in. Couples grow to look similar because they are empathizing with each other. They copy each other’s facial expressions. For example, if one partner often smiles in a certain way, the other is likely to copy it. In this way, their faces share similar wrinkles and furrows. Every morning my father buys a newspaper on his way to work. Every evening my mother looks through magazines at home. And every night, I look at the posters with photos of David Beckham and Yao Ming on my bedroom wall before I go to sleep. Can we imagine life without paper or print?
Paper was first created about 2,000 years ago, and has been made from silk, cotton, bamboo, and, since the 19th century, from wood. People learned to write words on paper to make a book. Then printing was invented in China. When printing was developed greatly at the beginning of the 11th century, books could be produced more quickly and cheaply. As a result, more people learned to read. After that, knowledge and ideas spread(传播) quickly.
Today information can be received online, downloaded from the Internet rather than found in books, and information can be kept on CD-ROMs or machines such as MP5 players.
Computers are already used in classrooms, and newspapers and magazines can already be read online. So will books be replaced(替代) by computers one day?
