English is becoming more and more popular in China. It can be used in every field, such as on some signs and restaurant menus. But there are some problems when people use it.Perhaps you've seen the English letters "WC" in your city. They show public toilets. But do you know it is far from native(地道的) English? In fact, foreigners from English﹣speaking countries seldom use the letters.
Workers in our city are changing "WC" signs all over the city. The government is spending much money changing all the bad English on signs and restaurant menus. Many other places in China are following our steps.
"WC,or water closet,is old﹣fashioned English. It sounds dirty to me."says Nancy,a young woman from the US.The old sign will become "Gents/Men" and "Ladies/Women". "I see much poor English in everyday life, and not only on signs,"she says,"I know what they mean, but they are Chinglish, not real English. For example, when someone says to me "My hometown is Guizhou Province",I know he or she should say "My hometown is in Guizhou Province".Hometown is a smaller place in a province. The common mistakes that Nancy picked up include "Not Entry",which should be "No Entry","Direction of Airport" should be changed to "To the Airport".And it is "Room Rate",not "Room Price".And remember to "Keep off the Grass" rather than "Care of the Green".
The next time you walk on the street or eat in the restaurant, you can go and see if the expressions are right.

Once there was a forest where all the animals lived happily together . One day a family went to spend the day in the forest , and the son left his socks there . All the animals talked about the bear’s new look . Soon , in that forest, there began appearing squirrels (松鼠) in shirts , rabbits in shoes , and even rats wearing hats! The forest doctor shook his head , telling animals , “This can’t be good . △!” But no one listened to him. They said he was just out of fashion .

Dreams are expressions of thoughts, feelings and events that pass through our mind while we are sleeping.Everybody dreams. But only some people remember their dreams. Our dreams often include all the senses-smells,sounds,sights,tastes and things we touch. We dream in colour.Sometimes we dream the same dream over and over again. These repeated dreams are often unpleasant. They may even be nightmares-bad dreams that frighten us.
Early in the twentieth century, two famous scientists developed their personal ideas about dreams.Austrian psychiatrist Sigmund Freud published a book called “The Interpretation(诠释)of Dreams” in l 900.Freud believed people often dream about things they want but can’t have. These dreams often have something to do with sex and aggression(侵犯).Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung worked closely with Freud for several years, but he believed dreams could help people grow and understand themselves. He believed dreams provide solutions(解答)to problems we face when we are awake. He didn’t believe dreams hide our feelings about sex or aggression.Today we know more about the science of dreaming because researchers can take pictures of people’s brains while they are sleeping.
Other researchers are studying how dreaming helps our bodies work with problems and very sad emotions(感情).Robert Stickgold is a professor of psychiatry at Harvard University in Massachusetts.Doctor Stickgold says that when we dream, the brain is trying to make sense of the world. He does not agree with Sigmund Freud that dreaming is the way we express our hidden feelings and desires(愿望).

Maybe you have seen this in schools:some students are studying nearly all the time but they just pass their exams, while some others may spend much less time on their books but do much better in exams. How could this happen? People used to think that hard work is the only way to success. But now they have understood that smart work can make them succeed, too.
Hard workers don’t mind working for long hours, while smart workers always think of several different answers to these question,“Why should I suffer this?” “Isn’t there a better way to do this?” Thanks to these people,we can use computers instead of the abacus now.Progress in every field is the direct result of “try to find a better way” by smart workers.
There was a large soap factory in Japan.Once it received an unusual letter from someone who complained that there was no soap in the soapbox he bought.
How could empty soapboxes go out of the factory? The engineers checked the producing and packing. The producing was fine, but in about one in ten thousand cases, the packing machine(机器)let an empty soapbox go.There was no need to spend a lot of money repairing the machine for such a small problem. The engineer soon worked out a solution, he put a huge X-ray machine and two large computers to find out the empty soapboxes. After teaching the workers how to use it,he sat down in his seat, exhausted.
“Sir,we could have solved the problems in a much simpler and cheaper way,”a worker said.“Really? How?”
“We can put a huge fan near the packing machine. The wind coming from the fan will blow away the empty boxes。leaving the other boxes with soap.”
See,this is smart work.In order to succeed,we should not only work hard like the engineer, but also think smart like this worker. Some students spend less time on schoolwork but do better in exams _____.
