John Smith is an exchange student from New York. Here is a letter to his friend in his hometown.
Dear David, How time flies! It's been 3 months since I came to China. I' m having a great time on my student exchange program here. So far.I've completely got used to the life here and have known a lot about traditional Chinese culture. I' d like to share some with you. In China , there are many different kinds of traditional art forms ,such as paper cutting, Chinese clay art and so on. Among them , the kite interests me most. The first ancient Chinese kite appeared more than 2,000 years ago. Then flying kites was spread into Japan, Korea and Malaysia during the Tang Dynasty and the Song Dynasty. Kites are regarded as the earliest craft (飞行器). They played an important role in the process of inventing the plane. Tea culture is important in China. Tea was discovered as a kind of drink by accident about 5,000 years ago. It is believed that tea was brought to Korea and Japan during the 6 thand 7th centuries. It didn't appear in England until around 1660. The tea trade from China to Western countries too place in the 19th century. Now tea has become one of the most popular drinks around the world. Lastly,I'd like to tell you something about one of the traditional Chinese festivals ﹣ the Mid﹣Autumn Festival. It is on the fifteenth day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar (阴历). Chinese people have been celebrating the Mid﹣Autumn Festival and enjoying moon cakes for centuries. If you 'd like to know more about traditional Chinese culture,I will talk about it in the next letter. Best wishes! Yours, John |

I’m Bessy. I began to learn English in Grade 6,not like most of my friends who have been learning English since kindergarten(幼儿园 ) or at least in Grade 3.I fell in love with this foreigner language at once. As an old saying goes, “Interest is the best teacher.” I began to be crazy about English. I learned words and grammar, made sentences, wrote essays and read English storybo oks as many as I could.
Some of my friends find it easy to forget the words they learned the other day. So do I! You can’t remember words well without using them often. So you should turn to a dictionary for help when you meet new words and want to know their other meanings and usages. Then make your own sentences from time to time.Another way to keep new words in mind is reading articles. You can easily remember new words through context.
As for spoken English, I’m lucky to have some foreign friends. So I have more chances to improve my spoken English. If you want to communicate with foreigners, don’t be shy, and just practice with anyone who knows English. When did Bessy fall in love with English?

Lightning(闪电)is shocking, and it happens all over the world! Scientists think that there are more than three million lightning strikes(袭击)every day in the world-that’s thirty strikes every second.
Lightning can also be very dangerous. Every year, lightning kills people because it can start big fires or because it reaches temperatures up to 28,000 degrees centigrade. American Roy Sullivan, who worked in a park, holds the record for surviving the most lightning strikes. Between 1942 and 1983, he was hit seven times!
So, why does lightning strike? Lightning strikes happen when ice and water in clouds rub(摩擦)together, and cause atmospheric(大气层的)changes. When this happens, it creates a static charge(静电电荷). Lightning can strike inside the cloud, between two clouds and between a cloud and Earth. It’s the last type of strike that is the most dangerous for humans. About 1,000 people get struck by lightning every year in the United States, and about 100 of them die as a result.
Lightning is certainly not something to toy with. When lightning strikes, it’s best to stay inside a large building. To stay safe, do not stand under trees, on hills or near water. Trees attract lightning. Also, do not lie down on the ground, otherwise the electricity may go through you and cause a heart disease.Lightning strikes ________.

I’ll never forget one summer day in 1975. On that day my mother suddenly died because of an unexplained illness at the age of 36. Later that afternoon, a police officer came to my house to ask for my father’s permission(允许)for the hospital to use Mother’s valve(心脏瓣膜). I was greatly surprised. I ran into the house in tears. At 14, I just couldn’t understand why people would take apart(分解)a person I loved. . But my father told him, “Yes.”
“How can you let them do that to her?” I cried at him.
“Linda,” he said quietly, putting his arms around me, “the greatest present you can give is a part of yourself. Your mother and I decided long ago that if we can make a person’s life better after we died, our death will have meaning.’’
The lesson my father taught me that day became one of the most important in my life.
Years passed. I married and had a family of my own. In 1996 my father became seriously ill. With a smile he told me that when he died, he wanted to donate(捐赠)whatever was in good condition(状况), especially his eyes.
My father died and we donated his eyes as he had wanted. Three days later, my daughter said, “Mum, I’m so proud of what you did for Grandpa.” At that moment I realized that my father gave much more than his eyes. What he left behind sparkled(闪烁)in my daughter’s eyes-pride.
