Diabetes is caused by a group of metabolic disorders in which there are high blood sugar levels over a long period of time. There are three main types of diabetes:

    • Type 1 Diabetes results from the body not having enough insulin.

    • Type 2 Diabetes mainly happens to those who do not have enough physical exercise, eat too much unhealthy food and get too heavy.

    • Gestational Diabetes is the third main form. It appears when a woman is having a baby. She will probably get well again after the birth of the baby.

Diabetes can bring serious problems. People with diabetes, especially the Type 1, will easily get thirsty and hungry, and quickly lose weight. If it is not treated, it will develop rapidly (weeks or months), and cause many long﹣term complications. All the complications relate to damage to blood vessels. For example, damage to the eyes. It is caused by damage to the blood vessels in the eyes, and results in gradual vision loss and blindness. The complications will greatly increase the risk of diabetes, by which about 75% of the deaths are caused.

According to a report from the WHO (World Health Organization) in 2015, about 415 million people have diabetes worldwide, which means 8.3% of the adults in the world have diabetes. Of all the cases, 85% to 90% are Type 2 Diabetes. That is to say, most cases of diabetes result from the unhealthy life style. Diabetes doubles a person's risk of early death. From 2012 to 2015, about 1.5 to 5 million deaths each year resulted from this disease. The global economic cost of diabetes in 2014 was around 612 billion USD.

A healthy life style can help prevent diabetes. Doing a lot of physical activities and having a healthy diet will help have normal body weight. Higher levels of physical activity (more than 90 minutes per day) can reduce the risk of diabetes by 28%. Healthy diet includes foods rich in whole grains and fiber, foods with good fats from nuts, vegetable oils and fish, little sugar, and less red meat.

Have you ever done something foolish and it made you feel so embarrassed(尴尬的)?
Well, that’s exactly how I felt. On a Saturday morning last autumn.I went to town to do some shopping and as I was on my way home from the shop,it suddenly began to rain. I at once ran into a nearby phone box because I didn’t have an umbrella. It was raining so heavily that I had to stay in the phone box until it stopped.
A few moments later,I saw a young man walk up to the phone box, wearing a yellow raincoat and holding a box. I didn’t want to go out into the rain,so I picked up the phone and pretended(假装) I was talking to someone. I thought the man would go away, but he didn’t. He just waited in the pouring rain, and I acted as if I was deep in conversation.
Luckily, the rain stopped after about ten minutes.“Okay,Mum,” I said loudly into the phone,“I’ll see you later. Bye!” I put the phone down, picked up my shopping bag and walked out of the phone box. “I’m sorry I took so long.” I said to the man.
“Oh, I don’t want to use the phone,” he answered, smiling.“I’ve just come to repair it. There is something wrong with it, you see .” I felt myself go red in the face and I hurried away with my head down, feeling a complete fool. That was certainly one of the most embarrassing moments of my life!

What makes us who we are? This question has two different answers. One is the environment that surrounds us when we grow up, and the other is our genes (基因). In English, this is called the “nature vs nurture debate(辩论)”. Nature means genes, and nurture means environment, including the people around you.
There is a famous saying: “Give me a child until the age of 7 and I’ll show you the man.” Now, there is a scientific research to support this famous saying.
They watched small birds in new environments, and wrote down how much they explored(探索). Birds that grew up with very outgoing birds were more outgoing themselves. Scientists at the universities of Exeter, UK and Hamburg, Germany did studies on birds. They found that their personalities(个性) were affected most by the birds around them when they grew up – more so than genes.
Nick Royle from the University of Exeter in the UK said the research was surprising because it shows that “for these birds, personality is mainly determined(决定) by environment.” However, human personalities are a lot more complicated than birds, so there is much we still don’t know. The nature vs nurture debate will continue for a long time, if not forever.
The famous saying in the passage tells us _________.
A.A 7-year-old boy can do things as well as an adult.
B.An adult can be influenced and changed by a 7-year-old boy.
C.The environment in the early part of our life has the biggest influence on our adult life.
Nick Royle is a(n) ______ scientist.
A. AmericanB. BritishC. German
What do the scientists think of the research?
A. Outgoing. B. Exciting. C. Surprising.
What does the underlined word “complicated” mean?
A. 有趣的 B. 类似的 C. 复杂的
Which is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A. The environment and genes affect our personality.
B. The scientists are sure that the environment influences the human personality more than the genes do.
C. The nurture means the environment .
