Boyan Slat has one huge goal. It's a goal that could be good for people and a(1) all over the world. Amazingly, it looks like he's going to m(2) his goal.
When he was 16, Dutch engineering student Slat was on vacation in Greece, and he started to think about all the rubbish that is p(3) onto beaches by water. The oceans around the world are all of plastic ﹣millions of tons of plastic. Unfortunately, plastic doesn't just disappear. It takes c(4) to break down (分解).
The p(5) situation of the oceans is bad and worrying and Slat wanted to do something to change it. So he made it a personal goal to clean up the rubbish in the world's oceans.
Slat started with an idea for an unusual m(6) to "catch" the plastic floating(漂浮)in the water using the natural energy of the ocean. He left school in 2013 to begin work on his project The Ocean Cleanup. Soon, the project r(7) a lot of attention.
A year later,he was leading a team of 100 scientists and engineers working on the invention.Slat needed money for this,so he started asking people to d(8) to his project online and raised over ﹩ 2 million!
Soon after,Slat was named a "Champion of the Earth" by the United Nations for his meaningful and v(9) work. It' s the most important title the UN gives to people helping the environment. The Ocean Cleanup also won several awards (奖项) for having one of the best inventions of 2015. But the d(10) goes on for Slat. He hopes that the oceans will be free of plastic in about twenty or thirty years.
People often think of the North Pole(北极) and the South Pole as similar frozen(冰冻的)
wastelands. They are both places with very cold temperatures and few people live there. However, the North and South Poles are not much alike as people may imagine.
The North Pole has no land, only thick ice.Temperatures seldom go above 32°F,at which water turns into ice. Most of the time,it stays below zero.In winter temperatures are usually as low as﹣30°F.
Although conditions were very poor, people tried for many centuries to reach the North Pole.About 100years ago,two men,Robert Peary and Mathew Henson, were able to get to this environment full of troubles and difficulties. They reached the North Pole on March 8th,1909.It was really a hard trip for them.
There are few things more dangerous than crossing the Arctic(北极圈) on foot.People who stayed there may face many problems:very cold temperatures, sudden storms, and even hunger. Most of the area is uninhabited.Few people can live in such a difficult place.
People might think that with such low temperatures for most of the year, the ice would be thick and hard. However, this is not true in the Arctic. The movement of the ocean water under the ice may often cause many different changes on the surface.Sometimes the ice breaks into two opening lanes of water(水道) called"leads".Anyone who falls into a lead can be frozen to death in a few minutes.

22.In a small house outside London lives an old man. People often see him look (1) his flowers in his garden all the time.
One day, a young painter (2) (go) by the old man's house. He looked at the nice garden and the special room, picturing how happy he would be if he lived in such a(2) (beauty) place. Suddenly he found the old gardener(4) (terrible) blind. Shocked, he walked to the old man and asked, "Why are you taking care of the flowers every day which you can't see in fact?" The old man smiled, "I can tell you four reasons. First, I was (5) gardener when I was young and I really love this job. Second, although I can't see these flowers, I can touch them. Third, I can smell the sweetness of them. As to the last, it's you."
"Me? But you don't know me." answered the painter, still puzzled.
"Yeah, it's true that I don't know you.(6) I know flowers are gifts which everyone loves. And the beauty of my garden will get many people into a good mood." answered the old man.

The old man is alone but not lonely. All of his flowers are his friends and neighbors. They (10) (grow) in his heart. I believe that he can hear the voice of them.
Recently, China announced it had achieved success in drilling fire ice or methane hydrate(天然气水合物即,可燃冰), from the seabed in the shenhu area of the South China Sea. It produces high amount of energy when it is burned, leaving nothing but dioxide and water.
Many countries, including the United States and Japan, have long been doing research on methane hydrate, but taking it from bottom of the sea has been a common problem they are facing.According to reports.China succeeded in drilling methane hydrate for a number of days continuously and got an average of over 16,000 m 3 daily. It is believed to be a big breakthrough.
Scientists say there is about 21, 000 trillion( 万亿 )3 of methane hydrate in the world. If we can use it, it can meet the world's energy need for 1, 000 years. However, it is too early to say a new energy source (来源 ) has been found because we are still facing two main challenges﹣environmental risk and economic(经济的)cost. When methane hydrate is taken from the seabed, it may go into the air easily. That's very bad for the environment because methane is one of the worst greenhouse gases, Besides, drilling methane hydrate is very expensive as well.
However, China's technology breakthrough is very important because it shows the way researchers across the world should take. It also raises hopes that one day we can drill methane hydrate as a source of energy.
