It seems that beauty and women are twins. You are joking? No,I am not.Watch it for yourself! Ads on fashion TV screens, radio programs, magazines, newspapers, and the streets.Whether they have realized it or not, women are surrounded(包围)by a sea of fashion. They are taught to think that without beautiful clothes they will grow old and lose their charm. so who dares to neglect(忽略) dressing up at the cost of their appearance and youth?
But I do not agree with the opinion that women have to show their beauty through their appearances. The richness of their minds proves to be more beautiful and attractive than their appearances. a woman who has experienced many troubles and may be called “aunt” or“granny” can still keep up her beauty if she has such excellent qualities as knowledge, ability,a kind heart, great courage, caring for others, etc.
In addition, old and young, beautiful and ugly are relative concepts(相对的概念).People who keep a young mind will never feel old.Interested in new things and eager to learn more, they keep up with the time. plainly-dressed women may have a type of beauty that is pure and real. Reading and learning is the best way to keep one youthful.Good books are rich soil which can feed the flower of one’s heart and appearances. Why does the author say that beauty and women are twins? Because women ________.

London’s Chinese community(社区) dates back to the 18th century, when a small number of Chinese sailors moved to the city to work in Limhouse, east London. As time went on, other Chinese people came to this area and Limhouse began to be known as “Chinatown”. However London’s Chinese community remained very small for many years: at the start of the 20th century, there were just 545 Chinese people in Britain.
After the Second World War, many farmers in Hong Kong lost their jobs and came to London. As Limhouse had been almost destroyed during the war, they settled(定居) in different area—a part of central London near Leicester Square. This area is now what Londoners call Chinatown.
At first, the new immigrants (移民) found it difficult to get jobs. In the 1950s, however, a small Chinese restaurant opened in London. Many British people visited it and said that Chinese food was wonderful! Suddenly, Chinese restaurants and take-aways started opening in every part of the city. Instead of too little work, the new Chinese immigrants now found that they had too much! They worked as cooks, managers or waiters. Most of them enjoyed their lives and arranged their friends and relatives to join them from overseas.
As time went by, London’s Chinese community became more and more successful. The sons and daughters of the original restaurant workers studied and worked very hard. And most went on to get highly paid jobs. Many Chinese families left Chinatown and moved to the more expensive outskirts. Chinatown, however, is still as lively as ever. Why did many Chinese immigrants come to London in 1950s?
A.Because it was easy for them to get jobs there. |
B.Because Limhouse had been almost destroyed during the war. |
C.Because many British people enjoyed Chinese food. |
D.Because their children could study there and get well-paid jobs. |
Where is London’s Chinatown now?

B.In Limhousse |
C.Not far from Leicester Square. |
D.Outside the city |

A young woman was driving alone through the countryside. It was getting dark and raining. Suddenly she saw an old woman by the side of the road, holding out her hand as if she needed a lift. “I can’t leave her out in this weather,” the woman said to herself, so she stopped the car and opened the glass.
“Do you want a lift?” she asked. The old woman nodded and climbed into the car. After a while she said to the old woman, “Have you waited for long?” The old woman shook her head. “Strange,” thought the young woman. She tried again, “Bad weather for the time of year,” she said. The old woman nodded. Although the driver tried some, the lady said nothing except a nod of head or something else like that.
Then the young woman saw the lady’s hands, they were very large and with thick hair. Suddenly, she realized that the lady was a man! She stopped the car. “I can’t see that mirror,” she said, “Would you mind cleaning it for me?” The lady nodded and opened the door. As soon as the lady was out of the car, the young woman drove off quickly.
When she got to the next village, she stopped. She found that the old lady had left a handbag on the backseat. She picked it up and opened it. She gave out a deep breath. Inside it was a gun!The old lady stood by the road, holding out her hands because ______.

C.Only the old woman could do that. |
D.It was dangerous to drive without the mirror. |
◆ You’ll never be good at Maths.
It’s generally accepted that boys are good at Maths and girls aren’t. The fact is that it isn’t true.
When girls reach their teens, most of them lose their interest in Maths. They think they are females. They want to stay away from things that are boys’ things, and Maths is still thought of to be a boy’s thing. The Maths class is hard, but if you give it a chance, you could be great at Maths, especially because you are a girl.
