In our country we think being modest(谦虚的) is a virtue(美德) and being proud is a bad thing. One day,I heard an American boy say to a Chinese student,"You speak very good English."But the girl answered,"No,no.My English is very poor."The foreigner was quite (1) at the answer.Thinking he had not made himself understood or the girl had not heard him(2) .He said,"Yes,indeed, you speak very well."(3) the girl still kept saying,"No."In the end the American boy could not understand and didn't know (4) to say.
What's wrong with the girl's answer? She didn't (5) a compliment(恭维) in the same way as the American people do.She should answer"Thank you"instead of"No".She (6) understood what the American boy had said, but she thought she should be modest. In the (7) ,people will feel (8) and confident when they are praised. So if someone says the (9) you have cooked are very delicious, you should say,"Thank you".
If you are modest and say,"No,I'm (10) I can't do it well",while working in a western country, people may think that you really can not do it.If you oftensay,"No",you'll certainly be looked down upon by (11) .When asking (12) a job,if one says something like,"Yes,I can certainly do it"instead of"Let me have a try",he or she will (13) get it.So in the west, you should be brave to show your self﹣confidence. In my opinion, being confident does not (14) being proud,so sometimes you should be confident (15) being modest.

My mind seems always to return to the day when I met Carl. The city bus stopped at a corner to the passengers(乘客).1 was included. After getting on the bus, I looked for a place to sit. At last, I found a seat near the back.
The passenger of the next to the one I was going for was an old man in a grey suit. Seated myself, I began to read the book I had been carrying which was Jack Kerouac's On the Road. The man in the seat next to me introduced himself by asking if I any other book like the one I was holding. When I told him I had, he seemed to become and so did I. He said he was Carl. And asked if I like jazz(爵士乐),and l told him that I didn't really listen to it and that I like rock and roll. Waiting for Carl to tell me that I listen to real music, I was shocked when he just smiled and nodded. He said, "You me of myself when I was your age. I remember how my parents hated jazz, how they couldn't see how I could listen to that terrible noise. I bet your parents say the same thing, don't they?" Now it was my to smile and nod.
As the bus took us from one side of the city to the' other, Carl and I talked about a lot of different things. The more we talked, the more amazed I became at the two of us really had in common, although we had the difference. I haven't seen him we parted, but the thought of our relationship that day never leaves my mind.

My earliest memory of dad is grabbing (抓住) his hand while we walked together. As I older, I remembered my father and I listened to many basketball games on the radio. I always fell asleep the game was over. When I woke up in the morning, the score sheet (计分表) with the score on it would be lying next to me. I’ll always remember that.
On cold mornings my father would drive his bread truck by the house. I used to ride on the floor of that bread truck as he delivered (分送) the bread to the stores. The and the warmth from the bread made me hungry and kept me warm. I’ll always remember that.
My father would attend all my games. One night before an important game my father told me that he wouldn’t be able to watch the game because he had to deliver the bread and it was a three-hour from his route. The next day as the game time drew near, I thought about my dad. I happened to look across the field and saw his bread truck pulling into the stadium. He tried to make the game. I’ll always remember that.
Years later I became a teacher. I’ll never forget the voice on the phone early one morning telling me dad had just been killed in a traffic accident. I could hear my heart beat in my ears. I up the phone and went back to my bedroom. After that nothing was very important to me. One day I was on the playground when a little boy walked up to me and grabbed my hand. His hand held mine the way I used to hold my father’s by the last two fingers. At that moment I found my in life again. You see even though my father was gone, he left something with me. He left me his smile, spirit and touch. My purpose was to use those gifts as he did. From that day I started. I’ll always remember that!

As I look back on it now, I realize it was kind of silly of me to be so worried when Daddy was really just late. I waited every night for Daddy whom I followed around everywhere.
That day, I stood at my place by the door, waiting for his return from work.
After standing there for a while, I began to where Daddy was. I ran into the kitchen and asked Mummy ,“When is Daddy coming? ”
“ Soon, honey, ”Mummy replied distractedly (心不在焉的) because she was following a difficult recipe(cookbook) for dinner.

I went back to the door, put my book and crayons (蜡笔) down, then went to get my mini chair to sit in. After a while, the became a pink-and-purple artistic wonder.
Soon I with relief (放心) as I heard the sound of the garage door and Daddy’s car driving in. I heard him turn off the engine and open and close his car door. The next thing I knew was that the door opened and there stood Daddy. I stood up and my arms . I hugged him tightly and whispered, “I love you”.
As I sit at the computer finishing this story, I know Daddy will be home soon. I still when he’s late. I still go to greet him when he arrives. And I still tell him I love him.
