The Arctic is home to over 21,000 kinds of animals and plants. Two thirds of it is the Arctic Ocean. In winter,it is completely covered with sea ice.In summer, nearly 50 percent of the sea is ice.

It's also home to about 4 million people,a group of whom are Inuit.Jim is an Inuit boy.At 6:30 am,he wakes up and gets ready to go to school in his fur coat.It keeps him warm in the freezing weather.Half an hour later,he gets to school on a ski or snowmobile. Some of his friends go by car instead. At 11 :30 am,it's time for lunch. There's fish and other meat in his lunchbox. He sometimes eats them uncooked. These foods give him enough energy.Besides local food, some people eat Western food.At 5:00 pm,the snow outside makes everything bright,so he wears snow goggles on his way back home,or his eyes may be hurt badly by the strong light. From December to March, the sun never rises. However,it always shines in the sky during the summer. At 10:00 pm,he goes to bed.Sometimes he stays in an ice house called igloo.I looks cold but it's warm inside. Many local people live in houses made of wood.

The Inuit mainly make a living by hunting and fishing. Now,their life is greatly influenced by climate(气候)change. For example, many animals they hunt for food are disappearing. There is less food for the reindeer they keep, too. They face more terrible weather, such as snowstorms.Hunting becomes more dangerous.Hunters may accidentally fall into water if the ice becomes too thin.Actually, the temperature in the Arctic is 18℃ higher than it was 125 years ago.All Arctic ice may disappear during the summer in less than 100 years.

Today almost everyone knows computers and the Internet. If I ask you “What is the most important in your life?” , maybe you will say “Computers and the Internet.”
The first computer was made in 1946. it was very big but it worked slowly. Today computers are getting smaller and smaller. But they work faster and faster. What can computers do? A writer has said, “People can’t live without computers today.”
The Internet came a little later than computers. It is about twenty-five years later than computers. But now it can be found almost everywhere. We can use it to read books, writer letters, do shopping, play computer games or make friends.
Many students like the Internet very much. They often go into the Internet as soon as they are free. They make friends on the Internet and maybe they have never seen these friends. They don’t know their real names, ages, and even sex. They are so interested in making the “unreal friends” that they can’t put their hearts into study. Many of them can’t catch up with others on many subjects because of that.

Sleep is very important. A person who does not sleep dies faster than a person who does not eat. We spend about a third (1/3) of our lives sleeping. That’s about 121 days a year!
How much sleep do we need? We are all different. A baby needs 16 hours of sleep every day. Children 6 to 12 years old need an average (平均) of 10 to 12 hours of sleep. Teenagers need 9 to 10 hours of sleep. An adult needs an average of 7 to 8 hours a night. There are some people who need only 3 hours of sleep. Others need 10 hours of sleep. After the age of 50, the average sleep time goes down to 6.5 hours a night. We need less sleep as we get older.
About one in three Americans has a problem with sleep. Many of these people can’t fall asleep. The name of this problem is insomnia. Some people say, “I didn’t sleep all night.” But that’s not really true. They may sleep lightly and wake up several times. In the morning, they only remember the times they were awake (醒着), so they think they were awake all night.
This is not a new problem. Many famous people in history had insomnia. Some of these people had special ideas to make them sleep. Benjamin Franklin had four beds. He moved from one to another to fall asleep. Mark Twain had a different way. He lay on his side (侧卧) across the end of the bed!
If you are thirteen years old, you need at least ______ hours of sleep.

A.16 B.12 C.9 D.7

What does the underlined word “insomnia” mean in this passage?

A.Being unable to sleep. B.Good sleep.
C.Slow sleep. D.Sleep with many dreams.

Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.We will die soon if we don’t sleep well.
B.The older we get, the less sleep we need.
C.We can’t tell a person’s age from his sleep time.
D.Famous people move from one bed to another to fall asleep.

Which would be the best title for this passage?

A.Sleep More! B.Go to Sleep!
C.Sleep Time D.Famous People

Now he’s an athlete who has recently completed a marathon. “After my accident I wanted to give up,” he says. “But now I’m happy to be alive and able to continue running.”
Helga has always been good at science, but she thought it was too difficult to become an inventor. Then she heard about an accident that had happened when a car hit a train in her town. “That gave me an idea,” says the clever sixteen-year-old girl.
