A small cloud moves slowly through the air in a hospital operating room (手术室).In the room a patient with cancer(癌症),lies on a table. The cloud is all around the patient, covering her body and filling her lungs(肺).The cloud is not smoke. It is made of millions of nano﹣robots(纳米机器人).These tiny robots move from cell (细胞) to cell in the patient's body, killing the cancer.
Fighting cancer with nano﹣robots is only an idea today, but scientists say that it could be possible in the future.Using nano﹣robots for good purposes such as fighting the illness or repairing the environment may be the way to many of today's problems.
However, nano﹣robots could be a dangerous risk as well.Because nano﹣robots are so tiny, they will have to work in large teams of many thousands to many millions. For this reason, nano﹣robots will have to be programmed(被编程)to build themselves.Scientists will not have the ability to build millions of nano﹣robots one by one.
This ability to re﹣produce is making some scientists worried. What will happen if something goes wrong in the programming?Quite a lot of crazy nano﹣robots would be far worse than any illness. Some people think that if they get out of control, nano﹣robots could make the Earth gone.
What should be done?Should we continue researching nano﹣robots or should we search for other methods? This is one of the many difficult decisions that we have to make in the future.

You like rats? You must be kidding. Everyone hates rats. But rats may soon be man’s new good friend.
What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue (营救,救援) dogs. Why? Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can’t get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat.
How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat’s brain gives a signal. This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the rat’s brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has smelled that person.
Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. “Robots’ noses don’t work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that.” Rats can also see in the dark, they are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don’t need electricity!
The “rat project” is not finished, but a scientist says, “It would be great. A rat could get into spaces we couldn’t get to, and a rat would get out if it wasn’t safe.” Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake, of course).Where do you think you can find this passage.

There’s always something deep in our soul that never dies. I moved to the small, busy town of Edison in New Jersey six years ago. It was during the second term of my fifth grade. My parents got new jobs and higher income, so they decided it was time to move from Woodbridge to a better, more educational town.
In the US, it is unnecessary to take a test to get into a “good” middle or high school. You just attend the school close to where you live. So, many parents will think about the quality (质量,品质) of the local school when they decide to buy a new house. My parents did the same. We finally chose Edison mainly because of the high quality of its school.
In New Jersey, an area with a good school usually means a concentration of Asian people. There are about 300 students in our school. 55% are Asians and just under half of that are Chinese. There are so many Chinese people nearby that we even have our own Chinese school.
Edison is an old town, just like thousands of others in the United States. However, I have treated it as my hometown. That’s where I spend much of my youth, and the memories there can’t be moved at all.Why did the writer’s parents move to Edison?
A.Because they were born there. |
B.Because it was a better educational town. |
C.Because the writer began his fifth grade. |
D.Because the writer didn’t need to take a test. |
How many students are from Asia in the writer’s school?
A.About 80. | B.About 160. |
C.About 220. | D.About 300. |
What does the underlined expression “a concentration of” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.None of | B.The whole of |
C.A large number of | D.A small number of |
Why can’t the writer forget Edison?
A.Because he regards it as his hometown. |
B.Because his parents got new jobs there. |
C.Because there are many Asians there. |
D.Because it is in the state of New Jersey. |
