Imagine a vegetable garden that everyone can reach one you don't have to bend down to weed, that can follow the sun around in a small backyard and that won't take up too much space. "Impossible!" you say think-again! A group of people living in suburb came up with a creative way to garden in small space.

They all love growing vegetables but not everyone could do that when they just had conventional vegetable garden. To solve the problem, they added a movable vegetable patch ( 小块菜地 ). They turned an old hospital bed into a garden on wheels. The bed can be raised and lowered so everyone, including people in wheelchairs, can enjoy working in the garden. Their local greengrocer provided some containers, where they planted their vegetables. This perfect garden can be easily wheeled around to follow the sun!

It is a great activity for Michelle, Marianne, Shelly, Jimmy and Ashley, who have a disability and are supported in their homes by people employed by the Department of Human Services. The garden is a joy to everyone and provides the vegetables for a lot of cheap and nutritious meals. "Our garden is coming along well," says Michelle.

"We've been eating lots of salad items lettuce, cucumbers, spring onions. Everyone loves them. Unfortunately, the strawberries were a failure. I think it was a bit too hot in the pots for them. We have plans for a potato crop next year, grown on newspapers and covered with straw and sheep manure. It is a very 'no-dig' way to grow them."

Have you ever wondered how and why a fall leaf changes color? We first have to understand what leaves are and what they do.
Leaves are the world’s food factories. Plants take water from the ground and take CO2 from the air. Plants use sunlight to turn water and CO2 into glucose(葡萄糖). Glucose is a kind is a kind of sugar. Using it as food, plants get energy and grow. Plants using sunlight to turn water and CO2 into sugar is called photosynthesis(光合作用). ChlorophyII helps photosynthesis. It gives plants their green color.
As summer ends and autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter, and trees “know” to begin getting ready for winter.During winter, there is not enough light or water for photosynthesis. Trees rest during this time and live on the food they store during the summer. They begin to shut down their food—making factories. As the green chlorophyII disappears from the leaves, we begin to see yellow and orange leaves. These colors have been in the leaves all the time. We just can’t see them in the summer, because they are covered up by the green chlorophyII.
The bright reds and purples in leaves are made mostly in autumn. In some trees, glucose is caught in the leaves after photosynthesis stops. Sunlight and the cool nights of autumn turn this glucose into a red color. The brown color of trees is made from waste left in the leaves. It is mixture(混合物) of all these things. It makes the beautiful leaves during autumn.

It was a cold winter afternoon before Christmas. My parents and I sat on the bench in Washington, D.C. Union Station, waiting for the train. Inside the waiting hall were many people.
A boy sat nearby. His worn jacket, pale face, dirty hands all seemed to tell me that he was homeless.
“He must be cold and hungry. Maybe I should help him,” I said to myself.
Just at that moment, a well-dressed young couple walked towards him.
“Excuse me,” the man bent down. “My wife and I bought two meal boxes but one was enough for us. We hate to waste good food. Can you help us out and put this to use?” he handed the boy a meal box.
The boy thanked them and opened the box with joy and care. Suddenly he stopped. In the direction to which he looked, I saw an old man in rags in a worn sweater, worn trousers and open shoes, entering the hall.
Putting the meal box aside, the boy stood and helped the old to his seat. He took off his jacket and covered it on the old man’s shoulders, saying, “A gentleman brought me this warm meal but I just finished eating. I hate to waste good food. Can you help me out?” He placed the still-warm meal box in the old man’s hands without waiting for an answer.
“Sure, son, but if only you share that sandwich with me. It’s too much for a man at my age. ”
We were all touched. Dad went away and soon returned with cups of hot chocolate and a big pizza. Mum and dad went up to those rags, “Excuse me…”
I rushed into a KFC and took out my pocket money. It was so cold that afternoon but I felt much warmer than I had ever thought possible.

Once a king got two nice falcons(猎鹰)from his son. He had never seen such beautiful falcons before. He loved them so much and he ordered the best falconer to train them to fly.
After several months, the king came to see how the training was going on. He found that one falcon had already been able to fly high in the sky, while the other was staying on the branch(树枝) of a tree quietly, just keeping still.
The king called all his falconers together and ordered them to try every way they could to make the other falcon fly. But none of them succeeded. One day, while the king was taking a walk in the forest, an idea came to his mind. Maybe someone who knew the natural environment well could solve this problem. He sent for a farmer who lived in the forest into his palace to train it at once.
The next morning, the king saw the other falcon flying above in the sky freely. “It is unbelievable!” shouted the king. How could you make it happen?”
The farmer replied, “It’s very easy. I just cut off the branch where the falcon rested.”
It is always the same to human beings. We all have “two flying wings” in our hearts as well, but we often seem not to notice them and stay where we just for safety and comfort. We won’t realize we can fly so high and freely until the “branch” we are resting on breaks.
