During work hours in Becker’s bread shop, the kitchen is especially quiet except the sound of the machine. The quiet environment is not the result of the strict rules, but because all the workers are deaf. They use sign language to communicate with each other from time to time.

Becker’s shop is in Changsha City, Hunan Province. It sells many kinds of German bread, cakes and coffee. It is very popular for the story of Becker who opened it.

Over twenty years ago, Becker and his wife heard about a Chinese public project. It provided language training for the disabled children, but it was short of trainers in Changsha. So they came in 2002 with a common wish to do something meaningful in life.

In Changsha, together with other Chinese trainers, they helped children improve their hearing and language pronunciation. Every little progress each child experienced was a great encouragement to them, and they achieved their goal in life.

After ten years of working for this project, they found that the disabled adults couldn’t be independent because they had no professional skills. Then Becker and his wife set up a bread shop to teach these people how to make bread. With their help, all of them were able to live on their own.

Luckily, Becker and his wife have also got the support from the local government. More people join them and understand that disabled people can work as well as others when they have the same chances.

Once upon a time there lived two friends in a small village. Jay and Victor had been friends since they were little children. Now they were studying in a school which was far away from their village. They had to cross a river, climb hills and go through sandy areas on their way to school.
One rainy day, the two friends went to school as usual. They were chatting while walking. Then Victor looked at his friend and wrote in the sand, “ Today, my best friend hit me.” They both continued walking without saying anything . Later, they reached a river. Victor was not a good swimmer. By accident, he fell into the river and was going to be carried away by the water. Jay saw this and jumped into the river at once. Jay, who was watching all this, asked,“So way did you write it in the sand when I hit you, and why did you write on a stone when I saved your life?” Victor replied, “ we should soon forget the wrong done by our friends as words in sand get erased easily, but if they do something good for us, we should always remember their kindness, just as words in stones are kept forever.” Then the two friends walked on as if nothing had happened.

All our food comes from the soil(土壤). Some of us eat meat, but animals live on plants. If there are no plants, we will have no animals and meat. So the soil is necessary for us to live.
The top of ground is usually covered with grass or other plants. Plants grow in soil, which has a dark color. This dark soil is humus. Dead leaves, dead plants and animals’ waste make it, but this takes a long time. When the humus has been made, plants can grow well in it.
All soil needs food. If we don’t give it any, the plants will be weak. Animals’ waste is the best food for the soil, but chemical fertilizers (化肥) are also very useful. The same crop (庄稼) should not be grown in the same place every year; it is better to have a different crop. A change of crop and the use of a good fertilizer will keep the land in good condition.
When the soil is dry, the wind blows it away. Sometimes heavy rain carries the humus down to a river. People should grow more and more trees and grass to stop wind from carrying the humus (腐殖土壤)away. It takes hundreds of years to make humus, and so we must save every bit of it. Without soil, where can we grow food?
From the text, we know people live on ___________.

C.meat D.soil
