When I was a ten-year-old girl, I was once asked to deliver a speech titled “A Real Test in My Life”. To talk before the whole class! Just imagine how 31 (terrible) shy I was the moment I thought of that with so many eyes fixed upon me. I had no other 32 (choose), though. First I was to draft the speech and that was just a piece of cake for me, because I was a good writer-something to pride myself in. But the hard part 33 (lie) in my oral presentation; to read from 34 paper was not allowed; I had to give the speech 35 my memory and in front of such a big audience! A real trial began when I stood on the platform with my legs 36 (tremble) and my mind blank. How much time had passed by, I didn’t know. My listeners were still waiting, patiently and without any signs of rushing me. Gradually I found 37 back, giving out my speech with difficulty. Finally I finished. After 38 seemed to be a hundred years, I found my audience applauding. I made it! From then on, my fear of talking before an audience disappeared. Actually with my confidence building 39 , I now turn out to be a great speaker. Looking back, I know the greatest difficultyon our way to success is our fear; overcome it, 40 we will be able to achieve our goals.

A Famous University Town
When we say that Cambridge is a university town we do not mean that it is a town with a university in it. The university is not just one part of the town; it is all over the town. The heart of Cambridge has its shops, restaurants, market places and so on, but most of it is university, colleges, libraries, clubs and other places for university staff and students. The town was there first. Cambridge became a center of learning in the thirteenth century. Many students were too poor to afford lodgings(公寓)
This was the beginning of the present day college system.
Today there are nearly thirty colleges. Many of them live in lodgings at first and move into college for their final year. But every student is a member of his college from the beginning. He must eat a number of meals in the college hall each week.
so nearly all of them use bicycles. Don’t try to drive through Cambridge during the five minutes between lectures, as you will find crowds of people on bicycles hurrying in all directions. If you are in Cambridge at five minutes to the hour any morning of the term, you’ll know that you are in a university town.

A.Children don’t mean to annoy their parents. B.Children can’t understand their parents. C.Generation gap exists between parents and kids. D.Communication can help you become independent. E.Parents should understand their children. F.Children want to prove parents are responsible. |
Parents complain that their teenage children don’t listen to them. They don’t like the way their kids are dressed. They can’t appreciate the music their children prefer. They don’t like the stars their children admire. Of course, teenagers too are puzzled. They wonder why there is always difference between them and their parents. This is what we call generation gap.
Some children have always complained that their parents are out of touch with modern ways; that they do not trust their children to deal with crises; that they talk too much about certain problems and that they have no sense of humor, at least in parent-child relationships. Actually, this happens as a result of misunderstanding because loving the young is the nature of all the parents.
Young people often get their parents annoyed with their choices in clothes and hairstyles, in idols (偶像)and music, but that is not their desire. They feel cut off from the adult world into which they have not yet been accepted. So they create a culture and society of their own. Then, if it turns out that their music or idols or clothes or hairstyles annoy their parents, this gives them additional enjoyment. They may think that they are leaders in style and taste.
Sometimes you are satisfied if your parents don’t approve of what you do. You may think that they do so for your sake. They tend to bring their children under control just because they want to be responsible for their children. On the contrary, you’ll be sad if they let you do everything in your own way. That will make you think they don’t care about you.
If you plan to control your life, you are supposed to communicate with others in a more effective way. You can charm others, especially your parents, into doing things the way you want. You can impress others with your sense of responsibility, so that they will give you the authority to do what you want to do.
根据短文内容,从下框的A~F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑.选项中有一项为多余项.
A. Argue with your boss about everything you want.
B. Make the issues clear.
C. Communicate at the right time
D. Don’t go in when you are angry.
E. Propose your solution
F. Put yourself in the boss’s positionBefore you argue with your boss, check with the boss’s secretary to determine his mood. If he ate nails for breakfast, it is not a good idea to ask him for something. Even without the boss’s secretary, there are keys to timing: don’t approach the boss when he’s on deadline; don’t go in right before lunch, when he is apt to be distracted and rushed; don’t go in just before or after he has taken a vacation.
If you are mad, that will only make your boss mad. Calm down first. And don’t let a particular concern open the floodgates for all your accumulated frustration. The boss will feel that you think negatively about the company and it is hopeless trying to change your mind. Then, maybe he will dismiss you.
Terrible disputes can result when neither the employer nor the employee knows what is the problem the other wants to discuss. Sometimes the fight will go away when the issues are made clear. The employee has to get his point across clearly in order to make the boss understands it.
Your boss has enough on his mind without your adding more. If you can’t put forward an immediate solution, at least suggest how to approach the problem. People who frequently present problems without solutions to their bosses may soon find they can’t get past the secretary.
To deal effectively with a boss, it’s important to consider his goals and pressure. If you can put yourself in the position of being a partner to the boss, then he will be naturally more inclined to work with you to achieve your goals.
