There was one thought that air pollution affected only the area immediately around large cities with factories and heavy automobile traffic. At present, we realize that although these are the areas with the worst air pollution, the problem is literally worldwide. On several occasions over the past decade, a heavy cloud of air pollution has covered the east of the United States and brought health warnings in rural areas away from any major concentration of manufacturing and automobile traffic. In fact, the very climate of the entire earth may be infected by air pollution. Some scientists consider that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the air resulting from the burning of fossil fuels (coal and oil) is creating a “greenhouse effect”— conserving heat reflected from the earth and raising the world’s average temperature. If this view is correct and the world’s temperature is raised only a few degrees, much of the polar ice cap will melt and cities such as New York, Boston, Miami, and New Orleans will be in water.
Another view, less widely held, is that increasing particular matter in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earth’s temperature — a result that would be equally disastrous. A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to a new ice age, and would make agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top farming areas. Today we do not know for sure that either of these conditions will happen (though one recent government report drafted by experts in the field concluded that the greenhouse effect is very possible). Perhaps, if we are lucky enough, the two tendencies will offset each other and the world’s temperature will stay about the same as it is now. Driven by economic profits, people neglect the damage on our environment caused by the “advanced civilization”. Maybe the air pollution is the price the human beings have to pay for their development. But is it really worthwhile?
As pointed out at the beginning of the passage, people used to think that air pollution _______.

A.cause widespread damage in the countryside
B.affected the entire eastern half of the United States
C.had damaged effect on health
D.existed merely in urban and industries areas

As to the greenhouse effect, the author __________.

A.share the same view with the scientist.
B.is uncertain of its occurrence
C.rejects it as being ungrounded
D.thinks that it will destroy the world soon

The word “offset” in the second paragraph could be replaced by _________.

A.slip into B.make up for C.set up D.catch up with

It can be concluded that ____________.

A.raising the world’s temperature only a few degrees would not do much harm to life on earth
B.lowering the world’s temperature merely a few degrees would lead major farming areas to disaster
C.almost no temperature variations have occurred over the past decade
D.the world’s temperature will remain constant in the years to come

This passage is primarily about __________.

A.the greenhouse effect B.the burning of fossil fuels
C.the potential effect of air pollution D.the likelihood of a new ice age

The Maldives faces the threat of extinction from rising sea levels, but the government said it was looking to the future with plans to build homes and a golf course that float.
An increase in sea levels of just 18 to 59 centimeters would make the Maldives-a nation of tiny coral islands in the Indian Ocean-virtually uninhabitable by 2100, the UN’s climate change panel(专门小组) has warned.
President Mohamed Nasheed has vowed a fight for survival, and he signed a deal with a Dutch company to study proposals for a floating structure that could support a convention center, homes and an 18-hole golf course.
The company , Dutch Docklands, is currently building floating developments in the Netherlands and Dubai.
The Maldives began work on an artificial island known as the Hulhumale near the crowded capital island of Male in 1997 and more than 30,000 people have been settled there to ease congestion.
The city, which has a population of 100,000, is already protected from rising sea levels by a 30-million-dollar sea wall, and the government is considering increasingly imaginative ways to combat(对抗) climate change.
Nasheed has even spoken of buying land elsewhere in the world to enable Maldivians to relocate if their homes are submerged. He has also pledged to turn his nation into a model for the rest of the world by becoming "carbon neutral (碳中和)" by 2020.
His plan involves ending fossil fuel use and powering all vehicles and buildings from "green" sources such as burning coconut husks.
What do you know about Maldives?

A.It has a population of 100,000. B.It has a floating golf course.
C.It is a nation of tiny coral islands. D.It is located in the Pacific Ocean.

The underlined word "uninhabitable" might mean _________ .

A.不能居住的 B.不习惯的 C.不能改变的 D.不能忍受的

The floating structure will be used as all the following except ________ .

A.a convention center B.a sports center

What are the government's ways to combat climate change?

A.Buy land elsewhere in the world.
B.Make the nation "carbon neutral" by 2020.
C.Use "green" sources instead of fossil fuel.
D.All of the above.

Today, roller skating is easy and fun. But a long time ago, it wasn't easy at all. Before 1750, the idea of skating didn't exist. That changed because of a man named Joseph Merlin. Merlin's work was making musical instruments. In his spare time he liked to play the violin, Joseph Merlin was a man of ideas and dreams. People called him a dreamer.

Merlin tried different ways to make himself roll. Finally, he decided to put two wheels under each shoe. These were the first roller skates. Merlin was very proud of his invention and dreamed of arriving at the party on wheels while playing the violin.
On the night of the party Merlin rolled into the room playing his violin. Everyone was astonished to see him. There was just one problem. Merlin had no way to stop his roller skates. Many businesses today use conferences as a means of discussing new plans for company. As people are paying more attention to the environment and green problems, more businesses are looking for ways to reduce their negative effect on the environment. Many businesses do this by using web conferencing.
Web conferencing is a technology that allows people to communicate more effectively over the Internet. It is an easy way of hosting and attending conferences without having to leave the office. Each of the people involved in a web conference will be posted an invitation to the conference with the time and date of the web conference on it. When the conference is ready to begin, all participants (参与者) must sit at their computer and they will be connected over the Internet.
Obviously, in doing this no fuel is used in traveling to and from a conference, and less work time is taken up in attending a conference.
Any material to be used during the web conference is simply e-mailed to all the participants before the conference. This not only saves paper but also greatly reduces mailing cost for the business.
As a conference hall or business center isn’t being used, it means that the only power that is used is the power used by the participants’ personal computers. Similarly conference organizers don’t have to arrange for food or overnight accommodation (住宿) for participants. All this means that less energy is used.
Many companies actively do many things to reduce their negative impact (影响) on the environment. So web conferencing is much cheaper and greener and more people are willing to host and attend a web conference.
What is the passage mainly about?

A.Ways of protecting the environment.
B.Green benefits of web conference.
C.Ways of hosting a web conference.
D.Impacts of web conferencing on costs.

According to paragraph 1, many companies use web conferencing because they________.

A.are interested in using any new technology
B.believe that web conferencing is more convenient
C.want to do something to protect the environment
D.haven’t enough money to hold a traditional conference

Web conferencing has all of the following advantages EXCEPT _________.

A.saving time B.promoting understanding
C.saving energy D.saving paper

The participants of a web conference_________.

A.will be e-mailed an invitation before the conference
B.are required to sit in the office together
C.will receive many paper materials
D.must have access to the Internet

When I was small and my grandmother died, I couldn’t understand why I had no tears. But that night when my dad tried to cheer me up, my laugh turned into crying.
. So it came as no surprise to learn that researchers believe crying and laughing come from the same part of the brain. Just as laughing has many health advantages, scientists are discovering that so, too, does crying.
Whatever it takes for us to reduce pressure is important to our emotional (情感的) health, and the study found that 85 percent of women and 73 percent of men report feeling better after crying.
Besides, tears attract help from other people. Researchers agree that when we cry, people around us become kinder and friendlier and they are more ready to provide support and comfort. Tears also enable us to understand our emotions better; sometimes we don't even know we're very sad until we cry. We learn about our emotions through crying, and then we can deal with them.
Just as crying can be healthy, not crying — holding back tears of anger, pain or suffering — can be bad for physical health. Studies have shown that too much control of emotions can lead to high blood pressure, heart problems and some other illnesses. If you have a health problem, doctors will certainly not ask you to cry. But when you feel like crying, don't fight it. It's a natural — and healthy— emotional response.
Why didn't the author cry when her grandmother died?

A.Because her father did not want her to feel too sad.
B.Because she did not love her grandmother.
C.Because she was too shy to cry at that time.
D.The author doesn’t give the explanation.

It can be inferred from the text that ______.

A.there are only two ways to keep healthy
B.crying does more good to health than laughing
C.crying and laughing play the same roles
D.emotional health has a close relationship to physical health

According to the author, which of the following statements is true?

A.Crying is the best way to get help from others.
B.We must cry if we want to reduce pressure.
C.We will never know our deep feelings unless we cry.
D.Fighting back tears may cause some health problems.

What might be the most suitable title for the text?

A.Why We Cry B.How to Keep Healthy
C.Power of Tears D.A New Scientific Discovery
