Once again, science supports what your grandmother told you: A good night's sleep helps your body fight a cold.
People who averaged fewer than seven hours of sleep per   1   in the weeks before being exposed to the cold virus were nearly three times  2   likely to get sick as those who  3   eight hours or more, a new study found.
Researchers used frequent telephone  4   to track the sleep  5   of more than 150 men and women aged 21 to 55 over the course of a few weeks. Then they  6   the subjects to the virus, quarantined them for five days and kept  7   of who got sick.
8   sleeping more, sleeping better also seemed to  9   the body fight illness: Patients who fared better on a measure  10   as 'sleep efficiency' - the percentage of time in bed that you're actually sleeping - were also  11   likely to get sick.
The results held  12   even after researchers  13   for variables such as body-mass index, age, sex, smoking and pre-existing antibodies to the  14   .
15   your grandmother, the researchers aren't exactly sure  16   sleeping better makes you less likely to  17   a cold. But they  18    take a stab at the answer: 'Sleep disturbance influences the regulation of proinflammatory cytokines(促炎细胞因子), histamines, and other symptom mediators that are released in response to infection.' In plain English, maybe tossing and turning when you're  19   with the cold virus  20   to the symptoms that define a cold.
The researchers were based at Carnegie Mellon, the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Virginia, and the study was funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are busy trying to 36in order to pay the high school cost for my brother and me. They don’t act in the 37 ways that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion, “I love you” is too 38 for them to say. Sending flowers to each other on Lovers’ Day is even more out of 39 .
One day, Mom was sewing a quilt (缝被子). I sat 40 beside her. “Mom, I have a question. Is there 41 between you and Dad?” I asked her in a very low voice.
Mom stopped her work and raised her head with 42in her eyes. She didn’t answer immediately. She43 her head and continued to sew the quilt.
I was very worried because I thought I had 44 her. I was very regretful and I didn’t know what I should do. But at last I heard my mother say the following words:
“Susan,” she said 45 , “Look at this thread. Sometimes it 46 , but most of it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt strong and long-lasting. If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can47 be seen anywhere or anytime, but it’s really there. Love is 48 .”
I listened carefully but I couldn’t 49 her until the next spring. At that time, my father suddenly got sick seriously. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month. When they returned home, they both looked 50 . It seemed both of them had had a serious illness. After they were back, every day in the morning and sunset, my mother helped my father walk 51 on the country road.
“Dad, how are you feeling now?” I asked him one day.
“Susan ,” he said kindly. “To tell you the truth, I just like 52 with your mom.” 53 his eyes, I know he loves my mother deeply.
Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and 54 . But from this experience, I understand that love is just55in the quilt of our life. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.

Sometimes people call each other “scared-cat”, but have you ever thought about this expression? When a cat is frightened, its heart starts beating faster, its muscles (肌肉) get tense, and there are changes in the chemicals in its blood-stream.
Although the cat doesn’t36 this, its body is getting ready for action. If the danger continues, this animal will do one of the two things. It will37 itself, or it will run away as fast as it can.
38 , when people are excited, angry, scared, or aroused by other emotions, our bodies also go through many 39 changes. Our hearts beat faster, and our muscles get tense. All of these changes make us more alert and ready to react. We, too, get ready to defend ourselves 40 run.
Human beings, 41 , have a problem that animals never face. If we give way to our feelings and let them42 , we can get into trouble. Have you ever said something in anger, or hit somebody and regretted it later? Have you ever shouted at a teacher, told someone you were lonely, or said you were in love, and then43 later you had kept your mouth shut? It isn’t always 44 to express your feelings freely.
Does this mean that it’s smarter always to45 our feelings? No! If you46 feelings of anger, sadness, and bitterness hidden away or bottled up inside, your body stays47 . Physical illnesses can develop. It can actually be48 for your health.
Feelings that you keep all bottled up inside, don’t just49 . It’s like you bought some bananas and stuck them in a cupboard. You might not be able to see them, but 50 you’d smell them. And if you opened the cupboard, you’d 51 little fruit flies hovering (盘旋) all over them. They’d be rotten.
You can try to treat emotions52 they were bananas in the cupboard. You can53 they don’t exist, but they’ll still be54 . And at last you’ll have to55 them, just like those bananas.
