Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy is on a mission to recover £46 million of council cash. He has traveled to Iceland for high-level talks with Prime Minister Geir Haarde. Mr. Murphy has vowed to do “whatever it takes” to ensure the return to local authorities of the millions of pounds which are locked in crisis-hit Icelandic banks. He also wants to see the return of money deposited there by a number of Scottish charities.
Mr. Murphy said Scots councils and charities had invested in Icelandic banks in good faith before the country’s banking system was severely hit by the global financial crisis.
He said, “Our relationship with Iceland has traditionally been a very good one. But of course, there are pressures at the moment, particularly because of the international credit crisis and the collapse of the Icelandic banks.”
“There is money from Scottish councils and Scottish charities invested in some of those banks and I’m making efforts to persuade the Icelandic government that money should be returned.”
“We’ve made it very clearly, and we’ll do whatever it takes to support Scottish people to get their money out of the Icelandic banking crisis.”
The Scottish Secretary’s move has been welcomed by the Holyrood Parliament. The UK Government is currently trying to save £4 billion in deposits held by customers in the failed Icelandic bank Ice-save, at risk after its parent firm Landsbanki folded. The bank’s collapse caused a diplomatic argument after ministers froze assets of other Icelandic banks.

Can you imagine a catfish bigger than a boy? There are more than 1,000 kinds of catfish;28 species are found in the United States' lakes and rivers. This huge family has some mighty strange members. Let's meet a few.
Walking catfish.Nature's feisty little catfish, found in southern Florida, has an extra lung for breathing on dry land. When its swimming hole dries up,the walking catfish waddles on stiff forward fins in search of another lake or stream. If an enemy attacks, the fish flares(展开)its top and front fins and leaps at the attacker to scare it off.
Armored catfish. This catfish has heavy, bony plates protecting its body. The shell makes the fish difficult to bone. To cook it,throw the fish whole into a fire. When it is done, break it open for eating. Some armored catfish are found in Florida, but the 100-pounders live in South America.
Rounding out the family of strange catfish are talking catfish, which make growing sound when you pull them from the water;climbing catfish, which move quickly up shore brush in search of food;electric catfish, which can deliver a mild shock;and blind catfish, which settle in the inky blackness of underwater caves.Blind catfish find food through taste buds in their eight whiskers(须).
Most catfish have four whiskers on the upper jaw and four on the lower jaw. Sensory holes on these whiskers help the fish smell and taste food even in the muddiest of water. The United States does not have catfish anywhere near the size of those in South America. But in some large U.S,rivers, blue and flathead catties do top 100 pounds.
Most of the catfish you are likely to catch will be much smaller, about frying pan size. When you catch one, remember that the top fins and the forward fins have poison glands(腺)at their bases. They can give you painful wounds (…)

When you turn on the radio, you hear an advertisement. When you watch television, you hear and see an advertisement. If you turn the pages of a newspaper or magazine, again you find an advertisement. If you walk down the street, you see one advertising board after another. All day, every day, people who want to sell you something compete to catch your attention. As a result, advertisements are almost everywhere.
In the West, advertisements are the fuel (燃料) that makes mass media work. Many TV stations, newspapers, magazines, radio stations are privately owned. The government does not give them money. So where does the money come from? From advertisements. Without advertisements, there would not be these private businesses.
Have you ever asked yourself what advertising is? Through the years, people have given different answers to the question. For some time it was felt that advertising was a means of “keeping your name before the public”. And some people thought that advertising was “Truth well told. Now more and more people describe it in this way: Advertising is the paid, non-personal, and usually persuasive (有说服力的)description of goods, services and ideas by identified (明确的)sponsors through various media.
First, advertising is usually paid for. Various sponsors pay for the advertisements we see, read, and hear over the various media. Second, advertising is non-personal. It is not face-to-face communication. Although you may feel that a message in a certain advertisement is aimed directly at you, in reality, it is directed at large groups of people. Third, advertising is usually persuasive. Directly or indirectly it tells people to do something. All advertisements try to make people believe that the product, idea or service advertised can do good to them. Fourth, the sponsor of the advertisement must be identified. From the advertisement, we can see if the sponsor is a company, or an organization, or an individual. Fifth, advertising reaches us through traditional and nontraditional mass media. Included in the traditional media are newspapers, magazines, radio, television, and films. Nontraditional media include the mail, matchbox covers, and billboards (广告牌).
