D
Louie was my neighbor. He was a strong man with powerful hands. One day, when I saw him brush the dirt off a child’s injured knee, I was shocked by his kindness. Over time, I found that he was attractive. We both loved the same books, but when it came to music, we were from different planets. Most importantly, he loved my children as much as me. We fell in love. I was divorced (离婚) from an unlucky marriage, and I wondered if a new marriage would be the best thing for my daughters. I knew that Louie was wondering if his great love could help my daughters forget the damage caused by their father. One day my daughter Jenny told me that if I wanted to marry again, she would like me to marry some-one like Louie. Of course, Jenny gave Louie a speech about what she expected out of a father and what she would consider as proper behavior. I thought that Louie would run away, but he stayed on. Helen, my six-year-old daughter gave him advice, too. Finally, with tears in my eyes, I said, "Helen, I don’t know what’s inside some men’s hearts, but I know Louie’s heart. He loves you. He loves all of us, and if there is any-one who can be your 'real' Daddy, he can. I’m going to tell him 'yes', for all of us!" We had a celebration dinner that night. Louie, Helen, Jenny, Michelle and I drank to a new future, a new family, and a new hope, where children are always treasured (珍爱) and every Daddy is "real".

Senioritis is a commonly used expression. It means seniors have a disease which makes them unable to do work. This starts in April when seniors find out whether they have been accepted to university.

The “Senior Show” is usually a part of Senior Week, which is a week specifically dedicated (专用的) to seniors.During this week, seniors usually get academic or athletic awards they have won over their high school careers. The seniors also vote for one of their male and female classmates who they believe is the best-looking or funniest or most involved, etc. These are then published in the yearbook.
The yearbook is an important part of high school for seniors. It is usually dedicated to them and has all their pictures and some words from them in it.Then seniors go around and get it signed by their friends so they can always remember their time together.
Of course during all of this time, seniors are preparing for the Senior Prom, which is an important moment in American culture. It is the most important dance in a young American’s life.

Animal experimentation is the backbone(支柱) of American research and treatment of disease. Each year, 17 to 22 million animals are sacrificed in the name of science. While 90 percent of them are rats and mice, 180,000 dogs, 50,000 cats.61,000 monkeys and 554,000 rabbits are done away with in Laboratories operated by industry and government.
But the public has raised an outcry over these deaths.Spurred vivid reports of cruelty, the animal rights movement is made up of 7,000 organizations with 10 million members. They've documented cases in which monkeys were isolated in steel tanks for 45 days and dogs were bombarded with radiation or chemicals until they bled from the mouth.
Scientists say such incidents are rare.I aws have been passed to govern testing. Many research centers now have committees to review all proposed animal experiments, and computers can be used in place of animals in many experiments. But scientists say they can't do without animals to test new drugs and treatments on animals to make sure they're safe for humans.Animal experiments produced vaccines or treatments for diseases such as diabetes(糖尿病), and techniques used in open heart surgery. They're important to efforts to find a treatment for AIDS.
Animals rights activists have shown they will go to almost any length. One New York researcher received more than 10,000 protest letters following publicity other experiments in which she gave drugs to monkeys. The researcher was studying drug addiction.A protester was arrested in Connecticut for placing a pipe bomb outside a company that used animals in tests. After fires and break-ins, many labs have bought electronic locks and alarms for protection.Other targets of the animal rights movement are the fur industry, farms, and school biology classes in which children dissect(解剖) frogs.
The movement has scored some successes.A dozen states no longer allow pounds- places that accept dogs and cats that have no homes to sell animals to scientists.Scientists claim the cost of their work will rise as a result.
