It was two years ago in winter when I went with my family to Engadine in Switzerland. The journey by car was pleasant until we reached the bottom of the Julier Pass(尤里尔隘口) when it began to snow.
Suddenly, the weather became very bad and soon we found ourselves in a storm. On the top of the pass, the visibility(能见度) was almost zero and we had to guess where the crash barrier(防撞护栏) was. It was terrible, the snow turned into ice and stuck to the windows despite the heating being set at full blast. Several times I had to get out of the car to clear the ice from the windshield(挡风玻璃).
But the way down towards Silvaplana was less stressful and we knew that we would arrive in paradise(乐园). It snowed without interruption the first day of our holidays and not being used to this natural weather, we found it simply magical to watch so much snow falling down on the mountains.
The following day, in this large, amazing area made up of frozen lakes and rivers between white mountains, we discovered a little hut next to the cross-country ski tracks, close to a farm. There was a fridge in this heated wooden cabin that contained milk, cheese and yoghurts for self-service. There was a list of prices for each item. You took what you wanted, then wrote down the total on a notebook what you had taken and put the money into an open box and if necessary took the change.
Where else could you find such trust? As I’ve already told you, Engadine is a paradise.

The old man fished alone in a small rowboat and he had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish. In the first forty days a boy had been with him. But after forty days without a fish the boy’s patents had told him that the old man was now bad luck, and ordered the boy to join another boat, which caught three good fish the first week. It made the boy sad to see the old man come in each day with his boat empty and he always went down to help him carry in the fishing lines or take down the old, patched sail.
“Santiago,” the boy said to him as they dragged up the boat to the sand. “I could go with you again. I’ve made some money.” the old man had taught the boy to fish and the boy loved him. “No,” the old man said. “You’re with a lucky boat. Stay with them. You must obey your father.” “We can be lucky again too. Remember when we didn’t catch a fish for 10 days, then caught a big one each day for a month?” said the boy. “Can I offer you a beer on the balcony and then we’ll take the stuff home,” said the boy. “Why not?” the old man said.
“Santiago,” the boy said as they sat on the balcony, “If I cannot fish with you, I would like to serve in some way.” “You bought me a beer,” the old man said, lifting the bottle to his mouth. “Do you remember the first time I took you out to fish?” the old man asked. “I was five. I remember the tail of a huge fish slapping against the boat, the noise of you clubbing him and the sweet blood smell. I remember everything from when we first went together,” the boy said. The old man looked at him with his sun-burned, loving eyes.
“May I get some sardines for tomorrow? Let me get four fresh ones,” said the boy. “One,” the old man said. His hope and his confidence had never gone. But now they were freshening like a sea breeze. “Two,” the boy said. “Thank you,” the old man said. He was too simple to wonder when he had attained modesty. But he knew he had attained it and he knew it was not disgraceful and it carried no loss of true pride. “Tomorrow is going to be a good day with this wind,” he said. “I will row far out before it is light. There will going to be a good day with this wind,” he said. “I will row far out before it is light. There will be a big fish?” asked the boy. “I think so. And I know many tricks.”
Why was the boy forced to stop working for the old man?

A.It was too dangerous to continue fishing.
B.It was time for the boy to return to school.
C.The old man was thought to be a poor teacher.

D.warn the old man about the danger of fishing in the deep sea

Which of the following did the boy NOT do for the old man?

D.He would usually go out further than any other boat.

The round-the-lock availability that cell phones have brought to people's lives may be taking a toll on family life, a newstudy suggests. The study, which followed more than 1300 adults over 2 years, found that those who consistently used a mobile phone through out the study period were more likely to report negative "spillover" between work and home life---and, in turn, less satisfaction with their family life.
Spillover actually means that the line between work and home began to become unclear. Work life may invade home life. For instance, a parent is taking job-related calls at home. On the other hand, family issues may start to take up work time. For example, a child may call Mom at work, telling her "the microwave exploded", explained Noelle Chesley, an assistant professor of society at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the author of the study. The problem with cell phones seems that they are allowing for ever more spillover between work and home.
This may be especially true for working women, the study found. Among men, consistent use of mobile phones seemed not to allow more work issues to creep(潜入) into family time. But for women, the spillover tended to go in both directions---being "connected" means that work cuts into home time, and family issues come into work life.
Cell phones seem to be opening more lines for stressful exchange among family members. But there may be ways to control the spillover, according to Chesley. “Employers”, she said, “should look at their policies on contacting employees after working hours to make sure their expectations are ‘reasonable’. For their part, employees can decide that cell phones go off during family time.”

Almost every day, we discuss the topic of health, especially for kids. But what is health? “Health” means eating well, getting enough exercise, and having a healthy weight. Let's read the following rules. They can help you stay healthy.
① Eat a variety of foods, especially fruit and vegetables. We all know that eating fruit and vegetables can help us stay healthy, but many of us only eat our favorite foods. Remember that we can only get the nutrition(营养) we need by eating different kinds of food, especially fruit and vegetables.
② Drink water and milk most often. Everyone knows that water is important. Besides that, kids need plenty of calcium(钙) to grow strong bones, and milk has a lot of it. Every day, you should drink at least three cups of milk (1300 milligrams of calcium), when you are 9 years old or older. You should also try to have less sugary drinks, like soda and coca. They include a lot of sugar. Sugar just includes calories, not important nutrition.
③ Listen to your body. When you are eating, notice how your body feels. When your stomach feels comfortably full, stop eating. Eating too much makes you feel uncomfortable. If you do it too often, it can make you unhealthy and fat.
④ Limit(限制) screen time. What's screen time? It's the amount of time you spend watching TV, movies, and playing computer games. Ever feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day?A group of time-challenged Canadian women are wishing for a 25-hour clock.
Jessie Behan, president of the 25th Hour Coalition(联盟)which is a group of Canadian women who have changed to a longer day, said the struggle for women to maintain work-1ife balance motivated her to research the body’s natural clock.“Many of my girlfriends are having kids, getting married, and I see the sufferings of dealing all that when you’re a working woman,”she said.“Women like myself are sick of living their lives by a 24-hour clock.”
A 2007 study by Charles Czeisler found a switch to longer days could be beneficial, especially for frequent travelers, shift workers, astronauts and those who experience trouble sleeping or waking.
In a similar study,Czeisler showed the body’s natural clock averages 24 hours and 11 minutes in both young and older people. The current 360-degree clock has 720 minutes, giving each minute 0.5 degree. With the new 25-hour day,30 minutes is added to each 12-hour period making each minute 0.48 degree.
While still a relatively small movement—the 25th Hour Coalition has 160 Facebook members,Behan is hoping for large changes.“The goal is to get as many women on board;there’s no harm in just trying it out and seeing. If it gets big, maybe the government will decide to standardize it.”
A recent online survey by Reader's Digest, which included 150 people in each of the 13 countries, suggests it's not just Canadians looking for longer days.Readers were asked“what would you do with an extra hour”if given a choice between sleep, work, exercise and family time.In Spain, half of respondents(被访者)said they’d like an extra hour in the day to devote to family time. The same was found for respondents in Brazil, the US and Britain, who chose family time over sleep, which came in at a close second.Only in India did work top the list with 50 percent of respondents claiming they could use an extra hour at the office.
