In some western countries, many children do chores (家务) to get pocket money. They usually start to do this when they are ten years old.
School students have to do homework and study for tests.  They don’t have much free time on weekdays. They often do chores on weekends.
Young kids only do easy chores. So they don’t get much money. But that’s enough. Many of them only want to buy candy. And candy is cheap! They often help do the dishes, sweep the floor, or feed the pet cat or dog.
When they get older, they want to buy more and more things. They want things that are more expensive than candy. So they have to work harder! They often help their parents wash the family car, cut the grass, or cook meals.
Some jobs are a good way for kids to learn new things. For example, they can learn how to use a lawnmower ( 割草机) or how to cook. Of course, their parents help them at first.

Long long ago, there was a swan(天鹅) with gold feathers. She lived in a lake. A woman lived in a small house near the lake with her two daughters. They were very poor. They worked hard all year round, but still, they lived a hard life and sometimes they even didn’t have enough money to buy food.
The swan was sad to see that. She said to herself, “I’ll give one of my feathers to them each day, then they can live a happy life with the money selling my feathers.” That evening, she flew to the poor woman’s house and left a golden feather on the table without saying anything. From then on , the swan came every day and gave them a feather. The woman was very happy because their life was much better than before.
But day after day, the woman became greedy(贪婪的). She said to her daughters, “The swan may fly away one day. If so, we will be poor again. We should take all her feathers when she comes next time.”
“Oh no, Mom!” cried the daughters. “This will hurt the swan. She helps us a lot!” But the mother wouldn’t listen. When the swan came as usual, the mother caught her and took all her feathers. But suddenly, the golden feathers changed into chicken feathers.
Then, the golden swan said, “Poor Mother, I came to help you, but you wanted to kill me. Now, I am leaving and will never come back. Never be greedy!” With these words, the swan flew away.

Someday in the future we may not need to have money in our pockets. Is life easier when people don’t need to carry any currency at all? Is money heavy to carry? Is it safe to carry money? Maybe in the future each of us will have only one small plastic credit card. We will use it to buy all the things we now buy with money. We will not need money to pay for things.
Of course we may still have some of the same problems with cards we now have with money. Sometimes we lose money. Maybe we will lose the cards. Maybe someone will take the card. Someone may even make a card that looks like our card. Since we can’t buy anything without our cards, the credit card may be no better than currency.
Is there something easier to use than credit card? Each of us has a thumbprint(拇指纹). No two thumbprints are the same. Maybe someday the government will keep people’s thumbprints with a number. When you want to buy something you will put your thumb on a machine or a computer. Each store or business will have one. Everyone’s thumbprint will be in the computers. It will be very difficult to lose our thumbprints! It will be difficult for someone to steal it or to make one like it.

There was once a farmer who had a fine olive orchard(橄榄果园). He was hard-working, but his three sons hated farm work. When the farmer was dying, he called the three sons to him and said, "My sons, there is a pot (罐子) of gold hidden in the olive orchard. Dig for it, if you want it."
The sons tried to get him to tell them in what part of the orchard the gold was hidden; but he would tell them nothing more.
After the farmer was dead, the sons went to work to find the pot of gold; since they did not know where the hiding-place was, they agreed to begin in a line, at one end of the orchard, and to dig until one of them should find the money.
They dug until they had turned up the soil from one end of the orchard to the other, round the tree-roots and between them. But no pot of gold was to be found. It seemed as if someone must have stolen it. The three sons were rather disappointed to have all their work for nothing.
The next olive season, the olive trees in the orchard bore more fruit than they had ever given; when it was sold, it gave the sons a whole pot of gold.
And when they saw how much money had come from the orchard, they suddenly understood what the wise father had meant when he said, "There is gold hidden in the orchard. Dig for it, if you want it."
