The word NEET refers to young people not in education, employment or training. They usually stay at home without finding a job. In China, the number of NEET youth is increasing year by year. Most of these young people are university graduates.
Miss Huang, a 25 year-old girl in Shanghai, gave up her first job in a restaurant because of her parents’ objection and her second, the salary. Now she has to stay at home, financially supported by her parents as she did before graduation from college. She said she would wait some time before she started another job as it was not easy to find a job she liked.
Some people do this because they are afraid to grow up and take responsibility, while some do it because they simply cannot find an ideal job due to fierce job competition. Professor Yang Yiyong, vice secretary-general of the China Association for Labor Studies, says that lots of young people are quite self-centered.
