One terribly cold day, a snowstorm hit our area. Needing firewood, I quickly set out with my best friend, Bruce, to look for a tree to cut down. Cutting down a tree in a snowstorm can be dangerous. (1) So to have a friend who could warn me of dangerso was important.
When I chose a big 23-meter-tall tree and prepared to cut it down, Bruce suddenly warned me, “Don’t cut down that tree! It’s too close to the power line!” I wasn’t sure about it. So I decided to disregard his warning. I couldn’t wait to finish the job and go back home. I began cutting down the tree. (2) When the tree fell, there was no longer any doubt whether my friend was right.
The tree caught the power line, bringing it to the ground. I considered cutting the tree off the line. After all, electricity can’t travel through wood. As I reached out my finger to touch the tree, pain ran up my arm and through my head. I had been shocked!
After I returned home and told my mother what happened, she quickly called the power company. Workers from the power company soon arrived. One of them asked if I had touched the tree, and when I told him I had, his face turned pale. “You should have been killed,” he said. It was my boots that saved my life.
(3)Within two hours, the workers removed the tree. Soon the snowstorm calmed down——but not my mother. Even though she was glad that I wasn’t hurt, my mother was still serious with me. After all(毕竟), I shouldn’t have brushed off my friend’s warning.将①处改成同义句。

Why do we like drinking water from plastic bottles? Some people think it is healthy and clean. Others drink bottled water because it’s easy — you can carry it around with you. In hot countries, like Greece, we often buy bottles of cold water in the summer.
However, making lots of plastic is not a good idea for many reasons. First of all, we need a lot of oil for plastic products. We usually use oil as a source(资源) of energy. If we reduced the number of bottles we made, we wouldn’t need so much oil. Plastic bottles also pollute the environment. If we recycled all our plastic bottles, we wouldn’t need so much space for rubbish dumps. But in Greece, we don’t recycle much of the plastic we use. In 2006, Greeks recycled only about 10% of plastic waste. The rest became rubbish on land and in rivers and sees. So next time you want to throw away a plastic bottle in the litter bin, stop and think. If you recycled it, you would help the environment. But what can you do when there isn’t a recycling bin near you? Well, there are loes of useful ways that you can use your bottles again. For example, an empty bottle makes a great piggy bank for your pocket money, and if you cut a bottle in half, you will have a plant pot. Go green! Emily and Alex were happy when their family moved to a house with a very big garden. They could climb up trees, grow flowers and even play badminton. They liked to watch the birds flying among the trees in the garden. They even started to put food out to attract more birds.
Everything was fine for a few days until one afternoon there was a strange bumping noise on a window. Emily went outside and found a small bird dead on the grass. Its neck seemed to be broken.
“It must have flown into the window,” Alex said when his sister Emily called him to have a look. “Ah, yes, look here. You can see the mark where it hit the window. There are a couple of tiny feathers stuck(粘贴) on the window.”
“Poor thing!” Emily said.
