Beggars are often seen sitting under blankets as people walk past them in Cambridge’s market center. Some ask passers-by(路人) for change and some just sit and wait to be given money.
To solve the problem of begging, an “alternative giving” plan has been suggested. Ten blue money boxes will be placed in busy places such as the market and the railway station. The aim is to encourage people not to give money directly(直接地) to beggars but instead to give generously to the local people who are homeless.
Different people have different opinions. Supporters of this plan think it will be a good way to solve the beggars’ alcohol and drug problems(酗酒和吸毒). But the police don’t support it. They argue that beggars who do not receive cash(现金)may turn to criminality( 犯罪). The homeless charity “Crisis” said the success of any plan will depend on its style. They think that imaginative and positive(积极的) plans can help create local understanding and sympathy(同情心). Most of the beggars don’t like the plan because they think they will not get enough money from the boxes for their showers, food, and clothes.
Begging is a big social problem both in developing and developed countries. Governments must play a big role in working out this problem. Training beggars to work and helping them to find jobs is a good way. This is true for developing countries where many simple jobs exist. People should also be educated to see beggars not as dirty and dangerous, but as people who need understanding and help.

After a 10-year project to count tuna and other large fish in the world's oceans, scientists have made a very surprising discovery: these fish are almost gone. Because of too much fishing, almost 90 percent of the worldwide population of large fish—the ones we usually eat—has disappeared. If we don’t act, these animals will totally disappear. That will influence every animal in the ocean.
The demand for fish is growing. Almost a billion people around the world get their protein(蛋白质)mostly from fish. Doctors praise seafood for being low in fat. But what seems like a healthy choice for humans is causing a disaster to our oceans. “People are consuming(消费)too much,” says Lance Morgan, a scientist at the Marine Conservation Biology Institute.
A dish of tuna in restaurants costs more than just one animal's life. When fish like tuna disappear from the ecosystem(生态系统), the ocean’s food chain(链)breaks down. Animals such as sharks, which normally eat tuna, may die because they find no food.
The news may be scary, but taking action from now on can prevent harm that hasn’t happened yet. World organizations are ordering countries to stop fishing too much. The Monterey Bay Aquarium gives seafood choices to anyone hoping to keep healthy without destroying the environment.
“If you care about wildlife, first spend time and think about your own values and beliefs,” says Morgan. “Then decide what you’re going to eat.”

All around the world, buildings are going green! People are making green buildings. What does it mean to go green or to make a green building? A green building is designed(设计)in a way that is not harmful to the environment. The building uses energy, water, and other materials in ways that are good for the environment.
When planning green buildings, architects(建筑师)must think about how to use energy, water, and materials in an environment-friendly way. There are many ways to save energy. Architects can design buildings to use natural light. Buildings can also be made with solar or wind power to get energy from the sun or the wind. To save water, green buildings can have areas on the roofs to collect rainwater. Kitchens and bathrooms can have sinks(洗池)and toilets(马桶)that conserve water. As for the materials used to build the building, it is important to use materials that do not have chemicals that are harmful to the air or water. Recycled materials can also be used for buildings.
Buildings around the world use all three of these ways to go green. An office building called CH2 in Melbourne, Australia, uses wind and solar power. A cultural center in London, England, is made from recycled train cars and is powered by solar and wind power. The Academy of Sciences building in California in the U. S. has recycled materials, solar energy, and a huge“living roof”of plants. A temple in Thailand is made out of one million recycled glass bottles! Liu Lingli has been a teacher for hearing-impaired(听力受损的)children for 33 years. Her first communication with hearing-impaired people was with her neighbor, Mrs. Wang. One day, when Liu was playing in her house, Wang used sign language(手语)to communicate with her. But Liu couldn’t understand. Wang’s husband told Liu that Mrs. Wang wanted to make her a scarf.
“I was moved by her kindness, and thought it would be great if she could speak,” Liu said, “so I decided to become a teacher for hearing-impaired students.”
At first, Liu almost gave up because of difficulties. She then thought about her neighbor and the pain on her face when she could not make people understand what she was trying to say. That made Liu stick to her dream of being a “special education” teacher and she succeeded.
Although she was only 18 at that time, she regarded the students as her children. Every day, she spent much time teaching them to speak.
