Plants are flowering faster than scientists predicted(预测)in reaction to climate change, which could have long damaging effects on food chains and ecosystems.
Global warming is having a great effect on hundreds of plant and animal species around the world, changing some living patterns, scientists say.
Increased carbon dioxide(CO2)in the air from burning coal and oil can have an effect on how plants produce oxygen, while higher temperatures and changeable rainfall patterns can change their patterns of growth.
“Predicting species’ reaction to climate change is a major challenge in ecology,” said the researches of several U.S. universities. They said plants had been the key object of study because their reaction to climate change could have an effect on food chains and ecosystem services.
The study, published on the Nature website, uses the findings from plant life cycle studies and experiments across four continents and 1,634 species. It found that some experiments had underestimated(低估)the speed of flowering by 8.5 times and leafing by 4 times.
“Across all species, the experiments under-predicted the speed of the advance — for both leafing and flowering — that results from temperature increases,” the study said.
The design of future experiments may need to be improved to better predict how plants will react to climate change, it said.
Plants are necessary for life on the Earth. They are the base of the food chain, using photosynthesis(光合作用)to produce sugar from carbon dioxide and water. They let out oxygen which is needed by nearly every organism on the planet.
Scientists believe the world’s average temperature has risen by about 0.8℃since 1900, and nearly 0.2℃ every ten years since 1979.
So far, efforts to cut emissions(排放)of planet-warming greenhouse gases are not seen as enough to prevent the Earth heating up beyond 2℃ this century — a point scientists say will bring the danger of a changeable climate in which weather extremes are common, leading to drought, floods, crop failures and rising sea levels.
What is the key information the author wants to give in Paragraph 1?

A.Plants’ reaction to weather could have damaging effects on ecosystem.
B.The increasing speed of flowering is beyond scientists’ expectation.
C.Climate change leads to the change of food production patterns.
D.Food chains have been seriously damaged because of weather.

We can learn from the study published on the Nature website that ______.

A.plants’ flowering is 8.5 times faster than leafing
B.there are 1,634 plant species on the four continents
C.scientists should improve the design of the experiments
D.the experiments failed to predict how plants react to climate change

Scientists pay special attention to the study of plants because _______.

A.they can prove the climate change clearly
B.they are very important in the food chains
C.they play a leading role in reducing global warming
D.they are growing and flowering much faster than before

What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs about the world’s temperature?

A.It has risen nearly 0.2℃ since 1979.
B.Its change will lead to weather extremes.
C.It is 0.8℃ higher in 1979 than that of 1990.
D.It needs to be controlled within 2℃ in this century.

Now, there is a new-type school in New York, which has no everyday lessons, no class teachers and even no school buildings. It is called “City-as-School”. The name just means the city itself is the place where students learn their lessons. They are from the age of 15 to 18. The students choose areas of work which interest them. Then they help to do that work. One girl spends her week in a Mayor’s(市长的) office helping the public with problems like housing. Then she goes to help in a theatre for a day and she spends a week for first-year courses at college.
Well, students have to pass Maths and science exams before they enter the “school”. These subjects are not easy to provide in “City-as-School”. Teachers watch the progress(进步)of the students. The success rate is high. 80% of the students go to college after the “City-as-School”.
The students like the duty of their work. They have the sense of purpose(目标). They know a lot about different kinds of work in the city. One of the students, Liz Martin, writes “I want to say that I do not know where I will be right now if I have never become part of City-as-School. Leaving the high school I once studied in and going to City-as-School was the best decision (决定) I have ever made. The way the school works to get you to go out there and learn different fields instead of sitting in a classroom is wonderful. For all those who are in between school and dropping out, go to CAS and it will change your life forever.”
City-as-School High School is the country’s model for high school students.
What do students do in“City-as-School” most of the time?

A.They do whatever they like.
B.They learn Maths and Science.
C.They help with work in some areas.
D.They learn all the college courses.

According to the passage,“City-as–School” can help __________.

A.students learn a lot about different kinds of work
B.all the students go to college
C.students make much money while studying
D.students forget the duty of their work

What is the best title for the passage?

A.A New City B.A New School
C.A New-type School D.A Girl in New York

More and more people are interested in traveling. Why do people travel? “To see more of the country and the world,” many people would say. Of course it offers us good chances to meet people from other countries, learn about their culture.
In 2014, Chinese people traveled to other countries 30% more than in 2013. The number reached 77,000,000. Chinese people usually join large tourist groups and visit several countries in one trip.
Chinese people don’t just travel for sights. They can also go shopping. For example, during Christmas, shops usually offer discounts. Then shopping in Europe and the United States is popular among Chinese travelers.
In winter, China goes through a cold season. So many people like going to some countries in Southeast Asia because the weather there is pleasant.
Now more Chinese can go traveling. But some of them don’t have a sense of public manners. A report says some Chinese don’t follow the traveling rules. Someone writes ‘Ding x x has come here’, someone litters, spits, snatches bus seats, takes off shoes in public, talks loudly and smokes in non-smoking areas. We should stop doing these.
