Whenever the sun dropped and the blue sky came up, my father and I used to climb the mountain near my house. Walking together, my father and I used to have a lot of conversations through which I learned lessons from his experiences. He always told me, “You should have goals like climbing the mountain.” Without the mountain-climbing that we both enjoyed, we couldn’t have enough time to spend together because my father was very busy. I really got a lot from the mountain-climbing. It gave me time to talk with my father and to be in deep thought as well as develop my patience.
Once we climbed a very high mountain. It was so challenging for me because I was only ten years old. During the first few hours of climbing, I enjoyed the flowers and trees, and the birds’ singing. But as time passed, I got a pain in both of my legs. I wanted to stop climbing, but my father said to me, “You can always see a beautiful sky at the top of the mountain, but you can’t see it before you reach the top. Only there can you see all of the nice things, which is just like your life.”
At that time, I was too young to understand his words. But later after that, I got to know the meaning of hope in life. I found myself standing at the top of the mountain, and the sky was as clear as crystal.

A. hard             B. enjoyable            C. painful

Which one is the best title for the passage?

Dogs have long been regarded as a loyal(忠实的) friend of humans. They are not only a good companion to their owners, but also a security guard in some way. However, in fact, dogs do more things than just that. Recently, a British middle school has invited a dog to the classroom. Why? For fun? For security? Or for experiments?
Flossie, a ten-month-old poodle, says “No” to all the above guesses. He is there to help increase students’ reading confidence. It is a little hard to believe, but it’s real.
Vice-headmaster Sue Frost is responsible for training and taking care of the dog. She said, “Flossie has a great influence on students. They are willing to read for him. This is really a good way for students to learn more new words and make new progress.”
Flossie is quite popular among students. Jacob Wicks, an 11-year-old schoolboy, entered the school last November. He said, “I think Flossie is a lovely dog. He always listens to me quietly when I am reading. There is no need for me to worry about negative comments if I don’t read well.” Another student named Jordan Leatherhead said that he liked reading Guinness world Records for Flossie, and that Flossie like listening to him because there are many records about dogs and other animals in the book.
Wow! This is really an interesting teaching method. Why not have a try if you have a pet dog at home?

On a stormy day last August, Tim heard someone shouting. Looking at the sea carefully, he saw that two kids in a rowboat were being pulled out to sea.
Two 12-year-old boys, Christian and Jack, had rowed out in a boat to recover a football. Once they’d rowed beyond the calm waters, a beach umbrella tied to the boat caught the wind and pulled the boat into open water. The boys were terrified and tried to row back to shore. But they were no match for it and the boat was out of control.
Tim knew that it would soon be swallowed by the waves.
“Everything went quiet in my head,” Tim recalls. “I’m trying to figure out how to swim to the boys in a straight line.”
Tim took off his clothes and jumped into the water. Every 500 yards or so, he raised his head to judge his progress. “At one point, I considered turning back,” he says. “I wondered if I was putting my life at risk.” After 30 minutes of struggling, he was close enough to shout to the boys, “Take down the umbrella!”
“Let’s aim for the pier(码头),” Jack said. Tim turned the boat toward it. Soon afterward, waves crashed over the boat, and it began to sink. “Can you swim?” he cried. “A little bit,” the boys said.
Once they were in the water, Tim decided it would be safer and faster for him to pull the boys toward the pier. Christian and Jack were wearing life jackets and floated on their backs. Tim swam toward land as water washed over the boys’ faces.
“Are we almost there?” they asked again and again. “Yes,” Tim told them each time.
After 30 minutes, they reached the pier.

Cell phones help us easily find people anywhere at any time. A cell phone can include many things, such as games, music and internet access. Today, 4.6 billion people around the world have cell phones, according to CBS news.
However, cell phones may cause cancer, according to the World Health Organization. In a 2010 study, people who used a cell phone for 10 years or more were more than two times as likely to get brain cancer, according to CNN.
These suggestions may help you reduce your risk of cancer:
1.Use a headset or speaker
Headsets give out much less radiation than phones. Some wireless headsets give out low-level radiation. However, you should take it off your ear when you’re not talking to anyone. Using your phone with a speaker will also make it safer.
2.Listen more, talk less
Your phone gives out radiation when you talk or text, but not when you’re listening or getting messages. Listening more and talking less can lower the risk of cancer.
3.Hold the phone away from your body
Hold the phone away from your body when you’re talking, not against your ear. Also, don’t keep it in your pocket.
4.Choose texting over talking
Phones emit less radiation to send texts than to carry a person’s voice. Texting also keeps radiation away from your head.
5.Poor signal? Stay off the phone
Fewer signal bars on your phone mean that the phone needs to give out more radiation to work. Make and take calls when your phone has a strong signal.
From the first paragraph, we know that ____________.

A.people can do nothing without mobile phone
B.cell phones have three new functions
C.it’s dangerous to use cell phones too much
D.cell phones help us a lot and many people use them

The study from 2010 showed that _____________

A.people should use cell phones for no more than 10 years.
B.people who don’t use cell phones will not get brain cancer
C.the longer people use cell phones, the more likely they are to get brain cancer
D.the more cell phones people have, the more likely they are to get brain cancer

Which is NOT true about the suggestions mentioned in the passage?

A.Wireless headsets don’t give out radiation.
B.It’s not good to carry cell phones in pockets.
C.Texting is better than making phone calls.
D.Don’t make calls when the signal is weak.
