Have you ever wondered what an American high school is really like? This article will describe a typical (典型的) high school and its students.
A typical American high school has several large buildings and enough space for about 1,500 students. Every student is given a locker. When students first arrive at school, they go straight to their lockers to put away or get their textbooks and to hang up their outdoor clothes. As American textbooks are expensive, students would rather borrow than buy them. Students must pay back if they lose any of them.
American students have different types of school transport. They usually take a yellow school bus or walk to school if they live close enough. Sometimes their parents drive them to school. When they turn 16 years of age, most take a free driving class at school for one term. If students get passing grades in the class and also pass their state driver’s exam, they can begin driving themselves to school.
Each day, students take six or seven classes. They must take science, maths, English and social studies. They can choose art, homemaking, clothes making and other classes. In some schools students are asked to take one or more of the following special classes: health education, physical education or foreign language studies. Students move to different classrooms for each subject. This is because each teacher has their own classroom. There is a five-minute break between classes, to give the students the time to hurry to their next class.
The school day usually ends early in the afternoon. After school more than half of the students take part in after-school activities. These activities include sports --- especially football, basketball, baseball and soccer or clubs, such as yearbook, speech, school newspaper, and photography and student government.
How important is your appearance(外貌)?Although everyone wants to be good-looking ,are beautiful people always happier people? For example, it must be a problem to be a really beautiful woman, because some people may be more interested in looking at you than talking to you. They think of you as a picture rather than a person. There are also some people who think that women who are exceptionally(格外地)pretty and men who are particularly handsome must be stupid. They believe that only unattractive(无魅力的)people can be intelligent.
On the other hand, no one wants to be really ugly, and have a face that even your mother doesn’t want to look at ;and no one wants to be plain, either-that is ,to be neither attractive nor unattractive ,and have a face that is easily forgotten.
Being attractive is like being rich it can help you find happiness, but it doesn’t always make you happy. So maybe the best thing is not to worry too much about how you look, but simply try to be an interesting person .For interesting people have interesting faces, and interesting faces are almost always attractive.

Dear Mom and Dad,
The time has come. I’m graduating ,and I thank you both for all your help during these 15 years. I still remember when you used to say, “You can be whatever you want”. I’m so glad you are my parents, especially when I hear kids say they don’t like theirs. I’m glad that you support(支持)me when I decide to do anything. You always try to help, and that’s important to me .
Dad, I remember when you first took me fishing. I loved going even though I never caught anything. I also remember when you would get angry with me. I realize you were only trying to show me the right way. When I would cry, you would always be there to try to cheer me up. That’s what I call a good, loving, caring dad. Sometimes you and Mom don’t agree with me, but you are there by my side in anything that I do, and that’s why I love you both so much.
Mom, I enjoy going out with you and having our happy time every Friday night, and I hope that never changes. I love telling you everything, the best part about you is that you listen. I’m glad we do a lot together .You love to have fun, and Dad does, too. You always give me your opinion and I listen.

Google is the most popular Internet search engine in the world. It was invented by two students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin. They met in 1993, when they were studying computer science at Stanford University, USA. They dreamed of producing something that could also answer any question in seconds.
Internet search engines at that time were slow and gave many websites that weren't useful. In January 1996, Page and Brin decided to make a better and faster search engine. They thought the results should be based on the most popular websites.
Nobody would give them money for their project, so they used their own money. They also borrowed money from family and friends.
