I stood there listening to my father shout at top of his voice. The look on his face said that one of us had done something wrong.
“Which one of you did this?”
We all looked down at the step. There was child’s handwriting in chalk there. I was very frightened. I hope no one could see it. Would he guess it was me? I was so scared. When he asked me, I lied, “Not me, dad.” The other denied(否认) it as well. Of course, we all knew that one of us must have done it. But as the youngest and smallest of the three, I just couldn’t find courage to tell the truth.
To find out who had written on the step, Father gave us each a piece of paper and a pencil. “I want each of you to write exactly what you see on the step.” I tried my best to write the words differently. I didn’t want dad to be able to tell it was me.
He gathered up our paper and looked at them. “Since none of you will say yes, then I will punish you all.” I stood there and said nothing. The last thing I wanted was for Dad to punish me!
“I did it.” My sister walked forward and said she had done something she hadn’t. she was punished for a month.
We didn’t talk about that day for many years. Not until we were all older and I knew it was safe to finally tell my dad it was really me. I always felt sorry because of it. That was the last time I let anyone take the blame for me. I told myself, “One must see to what he or she has done.”

Decisions, decisions! Our lives are full of them, from the small ones to the life-changing. The right to choose is central to everyone. Yet sometimes we make bad decisions that leave us unhappy or full of regret. Can science help?
Most of us know little about the mental processes that lie behind our decisions. Luckily, what psychologists(心理学家)are finding may help us all make better choices. Here are some of their amazing discoveries to help you make up your mind.
Consider your emotions. You might think that emotions are the enemy of decision making, but in fact they are a part of it. Whenever you make up your mind, your brain’s emotional centre is active. University of Southern California scientist, Antonio Damasia, has studied people with damage to only the emotional parts of their brains , and found that they were unable to make basic choices about what to wear or eat. Damasia thinks this may be because our brains store emotional memories of past choice, which we use to help the present decision-making.
However, making choices under the influence of an emotion can greatly affect the result. Take anger, for example. A study by Nitika Garg of the University of Mississippi and other scientists found the angry shoppers were more likely to choose the first thing they were offered rather than considering other choices. It seems that anger can lead us to make quick decisions without much thinking.
All emotions affect our thinking and motivation(动机),so it may be best to avoid making important decisions under their influence. Yet strangely there is one emotion that seems to help us make good choices. The American researchers found that sad people took time to consider the various choices on offer, and ended up making the best choices. In fact many studies show that people who feel unhappy have the most reasonable view of the world.
According to the text, what may help us make better decisions?

A.To think about happy times.
B.To make many decisions at a time.
C.To stop feeling regretful about the past.
D.To learn about the process of decision-making.

What does the underlined word “central” mean?

A.中心的 B.中央的 C.起决定作用的 D.后悔的

Damasia’s study suggests that ________.

A.emotions are the enemy of decision making.
B.our brain has nothing to do with decision making.
C.people with physical damage find it hard to make up their minds.
D.our emotional memories of past choices can affect present decisions.

Why are angry shoppers more likely to choose the first thing they are offered?

A.They often forget their past choices.
B.They make decisions without much thinking.
C.They tend to save time when shopping.
D.They are too angry to bargain.

What do we learn from the text?

A.Emotions are a part of decision-making.
B.Sad people always make worse choices.
C.No emotion seems to help us make good choices.
D.Only sad feeling affect our thinking and motivation.

The more books you read, the better your life will be. If you don’t believe me, please consider the following reasons to read more books.

You will have strong brain power .Studies suggest reading makes you smart. Unlike watching television, which requires no thought process(过程), reading is an active learning experience that will keep your mind sharp (even in old age).
You will travel to a new world . Sometimes our daily life can start to get boring . At times like this, I like to dive into a good fiction book, where I can forget about whatever problems are stressing me out. I’ll come back refreshed after my mini-vacation to a fresh and exciting place in the world of words.
You will improve your vocabulary . The more words you’re able to use, the better you will become at expressing your thoughts and feelings. I couldn’t imagine how I would write articles like this if I didn’t actively aim to improve my vocabulary, because using the same few words to express myself would get awfully boring in a hurry.
You will entertain yourself at a low price .If you’re looking for entertainment without much money, reading is your best choice. Thanks to the popularity of electronic reading devices(设备), it’s never been easier to entertain yourself for hours at a time, for the low cost of a few dollars.
You will discover surprising new ideas. Reading introduced me to concepts (概念)like mindful eating, relaxation exercises, and the importance of loving yourself. If I didn’t read, I wouldn’t realize these ideas. If you don’t read, you will miss many surprising new ideas.
You will become an expert(专家) in your field . Don’t you think reading articles and books by experts in your field might make you better at what you do? If you don’t learn more about your profession, then your lack of passion could be a sign that you’re in the wrong field.
