“AN Englishman, even if he is alone, forms an orderly queue (队伍) of one,” wrote famous British author George Mikes. While this sounds funny, it’s a popular English stereotype (刻板印象). From the supermarket to the subway, queues are a common sight on the streets of Britain.
Here in China, queues are normal, too. It is a part of everyday life. People queue most of the time, from buying tickets in the cinema to waiting for seats at a restaurant.
But in certain situations, you’ll find yourself in the middle of a rushing crowd, such as getting onto the subway. Even away from the busy subway platform (站台), queues are different. One day I was standing in line at the supermarket.
I left a small space in front of me. Within seconds, a girl walked by and took her place in that small space.
I was surprised at first, but later I found these experiences very interesting. It is with these small, everyday differences that I get to live and learn within a new culture.
Back in Britain, the average person spends six months of their life waiting in a queue, according to the auction site MadBid. To pass the time, maybe they tell themselves the famous proverb: good things come to those who wait. The English are well known for _____.

These days haze(雾霾)is around us here and there. In fact, everyone has the power to change their living habits to help reduce it. Many local governments call on their people to take action to make the air cleaner.
Transport is one of the biggest contributors(促成物)to haze. When, where, how, why and what you drive all affect air quality (质量). When one drives to work for one year, he uses as much energy as a bus rider uses in 10 years. So walk or ride your bicycle to work or school whenever possible. If necessary, you can use public transport instead of your car. Each person using public transport for a year instead of a car can save nearly a ton of pollutants, including CO2, from going into the air.
Carpooling (拼车) is another way to reduce carbon emissions (排放). Carpooling is the sharing of car journeys so that more than one person travels in a car. It immediately reduces your car’s emissions by half.
Lots of our energy supply comes from burning coal, another contributor to haze. By cutting down your electricity use, you are cutting down on haze. So you may try to reduce your use of electricity by turning off lights, using your air conditioner wisely during the summer months, or updating (更新) your electrical appliances (电器) to low-energy models. For example, you can use energy-saving lamps that require less energy and last 10 times longer than common bulbs.Who should play an important role in reducing haze?

Taking away a city's rubbish is a big job. Every day trucks come into a city to collect it. Most rubbish is made up of things we can't eat or use. If we kept these things, we would soon have a mountain of rubbish.
In some cities the rubbish is collected and taken outside of city to a dump (垃圾场). Often the city dump is placed where the ground is low or there is a big hole. The kitchen rubbish is broken into small pieces and sent into thesewagesystem (系统). The sewage system takes away the used water from toilets, bathtubs (浴缸) and other places.
To keep mice and flies away, some earth is used to cover the newly dumped rubbish. Later, grass may be planted on the rubbish-filled land. Finally, a house or a school may be built there, and then you'd never know that this had once been an old rubbish dump.
In other cities the rubbish is burnt in special places. The fire burns everything except the metal. Sometimes the metal can be used again in factories where things are made of metal. The food parts of rubbish are put in special piles (堆) and they slowly change into something that looks like black earth. It is rich with the kinds of things that feed plants and help them grow. You can most probably read the passage in _________.

Dear neighbors,
We are writing this letter to you because our school has started a group. It is called “Help the Environment”. It works to look after the environment.
Here are some interesting facts that our group has learnt:
Most things that we throw away can be reused or recycled.
Some European countries, for example, Germany, already recycle half of their waste.
90% of people in our country would like to recycle more.
We think that most people would agree with these statements:
We need to recycle our waste, not use up the world’s sources.
It is better to recycle waste than to burn it in the earth or the sea.
Our environment group has decided that one of the best things we can do is to collect reusable waste. We will sell this waste to recycle companies and give the money to Friends of the Earth. We would like people living near the school to bring their recyclable waste to the school. But if you are too busy, we will collect it from you once a week.
We hope that you will agree to this. If you do, pleasesign your names below this letter.
Yours,
John Cooper
