| Dear Li Ming, How is everything going with you? Now let me tell you something about three meals in our country. We know people here are different from people of many other countries. English breakfast is usually a very big meal of fried eggs, bread, cakes, tomatoes, tea, coffee and fruit. But we often eat a quick lunch only sandwiches and a cup of coffee. Children at school can have a hot meal of meat or fish. We usually have our dinner of beef or fish with vegetables from 7 p.m. To 9 p.m., and if we have dinner with friends, it can last very late at night. On weekends, we like to have meals with all the family members. We always begin with soup or snacks, then we eat chicken, beef, with potatoes, vegetables and many other things such as salad and fruit. How do you remember the way to your house? Where do dreams come from? It is your brain (大脑) that does these things. A British scientist showed that “sleep can improve one’s memory.” It’s not a dream for students to study when they sleep. In fact, your brain is working day and night. If you learn words before bed, a certain part of the brain may help you to remember the words while you sleep. What’s more, another scientist in the USA found that there was a “talent button (天才按钮)” in the human brain. It might make a person more talented.
There are more interesting things about the brain. Your brain uses less energy than a fridge light. Just two bananas can give the brain enough energy to work for a whole day. According to some scientists, yawning (打哈欠) keeps our brains “cool”, which makes us think quicker.

It is reported by Chinese Xinhua News that students waste more food than the national average. So the campaign on school food waste is getting popular across the country. The move is part of a national campaign started by students at different schools.
At East China University of Science, students who finish their food in the school dining hall get a special card when they return their plates after meals. Students can collect cards and exchange them for small gifts, such as books, schoolbags, magazines and umbrellas. “It’s been such a surprise,” said Liang Zhaoyun, 19, a student in Shanghai. “It has given us one more motivation to eat up our food.”
“The purpose of the campaign is not only to encourage students to finish their food. We hope it can also teach students to choose a more environment-friendly and healthy lifestyle,” said Tao Siliang from University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Other schools also pay attention to the quantity of food. At Nanjing No.9 Middle School, rice is divided into three different-sized bowls that students can choose from according to their own need. “It’s great because I can try different dishes at half price and don’t waste so much food,” said Fan Peng, 15, a student from this middle school.
What if you really can’t finish all your food? At Changchun Normal College, they provide a take-away service. “If you can’t finish all your food, you can get a box to take the left food home. Even if you feed the cat, it’s not wasted,” said Zhou Zeyong, a student who learns Chinese education.
“I’m happy that we’ve cut down waste since joining the school ‘eat-up’ meeting. But some food is poorly cooked, meaning that students are not willing to finish it all. Some schools have taken note of this. So if we hope students try to waste less food, we should also improve the service and keep an eye on the meal quality on weekdays at school. If not, you can’t complain students for throwing away much food,” said Wang Guangji, the head-teacher of Beijing No. 29 Middle School. Why did we start the campaign on food waste at schools? Have you heard of Chen Binqiang in Zhejiang Province? Over the past six years, he has taken care of his mother who got Alzheimer’s disease.
Chen’s mother, 64-year-old Chen Yueguang, has been ill since 2007. The illness became very serious quickly and she has lost the ability to speak and can not look after herself.None of Chen’s other family members, however, could take care of their sick mother.Chen’s father died in a traffic accident when he was eight, his two sisters married far away and his wife has a 92-year-old grandmother to look after.
Chen taught Chinese in Central School of Lengshui town, which is about 30 kilometers away from his home in Pan’an. So he spent five days at school and only went home on weekends.When he said he would take his mother to work, even his wife was doubtful and worried. She really doesn’t think it is a good idea for him to take care of his mother in school. She worries what if he lost his job because of this.
But Chen has made the decision. Soon he was putting a safety hat onto his mother’s head and helping her sit on his electric bike’s back seat. He thinks that his mother used to take him around and now he should take her.
These days, things got a little easier for him. With the help of Pan’an government, Chen got a new job in Pan’an Middle School in October 2012.The new school is only five minutes’ ride from his home, which means he can take care of his mother more conveniently.
